Fellow classmates, as a freshman like you at George Mason High school, I would like to address the issue of unfair seniority at GMHS. Seniority is the concept of a group of people having more privileges because they are older than another group of people. Despite the fact that this concept does make sense for upperclassmen at GMHS, some are abusing these privileges. Entering high school can be a scary and nerve wracking experience for anyone. There are older kids, new teachers, and of course, the overwhelming new building. These issues could be helped if upperclassmen aided and supported under classmen and “new meat.” However, older kids do the complete opposite. This maltreatment is obnoxious and rude. Some freshmen have faltered and are even afraid to walk through the senior hallway. In attempt to dispel first day jitters, mustang ambassadors claim to be benevolent to freshman when they meet during the school year. However, I have yet to see these exploits. Freshman should not have to be afraid to walk through their own school. Every student at George Mason was a freshman once too and everyone knows how scary change can be. Therefore, these factions that make up the school should not be as segregated as they are. There is a fine line between upholding the traditional social classes of high school and being just plain ridiculous. For example, around the beginning of the school year, some sophomores were sitting in the “junior alcove” and caused the juniors an immense amount of unneeded frustration. There was talk of hating the sophomores and even starting a twitter war. This tumult was extremely over exaggerated.
