Fellow classmates, as a freshman like you at George Mason High school, I would like to address the issue of unfair seniority at GMHS. Seniority is the concept of a group of people having more privileges because they are older than another group of people. Despite the fact that this concept does make sense for upperclassmen at GMHS, some are abusing these privileges. Entering high school can be a scary and nerve wracking experience for anyone. There are older kids, new teachers, and of course, the overwhelming new building. These issues could be helped if upperclassmen aided and supported under classmen and “new meat.” However, older kids do the complete opposite. Before I entered George Mason, I heard stories about seniors being cynical to …show more content…
This maltreatment is obnoxious and rude. Some freshmen have faltered and are even afraid to walk through the senior hallway. In attempt to dispel first day jitters, mustang ambassadors claim to be benevolent to freshman when they meet during the school year. However, I have yet to see these exploits. Freshman should not have to be afraid to walk through their own school. Every student at George Mason was a freshman once too and everyone knows how scary change can be. Therefore, these factions that make up the school should not be as segregated as they are. There is a fine line between upholding the traditional social classes of high school and being just plain ridiculous. For example, around the beginning of the school year, some sophomores were sitting in the “junior alcove” and caused the juniors an immense amount of unneeded frustration. There was talk of hating the sophomores and even starting a twitter war. This tumult was extremely over exaggerated. Why is it that any time someone disturbs the status quo, a frenzy of inane fighting breaks out? In addition to this fighting, mocking and stereotyping of freshman has also come to my

This expresses the issues with racism in American history. There should have never been a time where a student is scared to speak out and protect themselves
Adults are seen as the source of power in an educational setting. They have a lot of control on the success of students and serve as disciplinarians, molding adolescence and aiding in creating their thoughts of right and wrong. In the case of the Saints versus the Roughnecks, the boys in the Saints group were involved in a variety of activities and performed well academically. On the opposite side, the Roughnecks were C-average students. In educational settings, students are praised for their academic achievements.
They both capture the issues and controversies revolving raising senior’s socioeconomic
The hierarchies that are put in place in the education system do not guarantee success they only hope for it. These hierarchies mainly tell people that they are destined to succeed; however, these individuals do not always succeed in what they want to do. Faludi discusses how while in hierarchies such as the hierarchy of men having a higher rank in society. However, even in Faludi’s essay, she talked to a professor at The Citadel, Linda Ross, who told her that, “There’s a Citadel graduate working as a cashier at the grocery store” (Faludi 80). With no clear advantages to the hierarchy as people without a degree could also be working at a grocery store.
In keeping this standard they are ignoring the capabilities that many kids have. When students graduate, the main idea that they know is how to be a good society member, which, in other words, means that they know how to blend in, to not stick
Within Conflict theory, there is tension between groups of people because there is one wanting to run and rule over the other. In the movie we can see this happen with the Plastics, which could compare to the bourgeoisie. They believe the universe revolves around them and the other “lower” students need to care to their every command. The plastics also humiliate other students in any way possible and refuse to socialize with anyone who is not in their elite class. They are perfectly content with the status quo of their lives and don't want a thing to change in the world at the moment.
My mother has always told me that I was, “born in the wrong generation.” I’ve been described as being divergent compared to most teenagers my age, and I tend to have a different way of thinking. Because of this asset, I find myself constantly losing friends due to my disinterest and lack of conformity to the things they label as cool (drugs, sex, alcohol). That being said, my biggest concern upon attending Sweet Briar, is that I will not be compatible with anyone at the school, in addition to the abundance of females at the school. At times, females can be known to be more dramatic than males, and that can cause some issues.
Older students are wiser they know what they have already tried and what
Many students believe that high school seniors should be provided with privileges in honor of their completion of high school. Seniors, they argue, deserve additional rights, considering that they are practically adults and will soon be attending college. To further this transition, as well as prepare for it, there have been numerous privileges granted to high school seniors across the nation, ranging from primary parking to the shortening of schedules. At GHS, senior privileges are implied rather than established.
Each social clique at East High has acceptable behaviors, but it is not acceptable to intermingle with people that are outside of your social clique. It’s normal for the students at East High to not branch out and discover passions outside of your usual social circle. The social order at East High has caused the students to become ashamed of some of their secret interests and passions. An example of social status and social stratification on a different level in this movie is through the faculty. Troy and his best friend Chad got detention for and detention is monitored by the drama teacher, Mrs. Darbus.
Once, a student asked out loud if anyone else would like to buy crack. Fights occur often over trivial reasons. The students do not even bother learning the material, mostly out of refusal to do so. IV. Town
Also, be prepared each freshman will become comfortable sharing at their own rate. Just give them time and unless necessary do not force them into the conversation. This will only make them feel less
Unfortunately, based on years of experience, as shown Table 4.3 in Chapter 4, those teachers with a higher number of years of experience tend to have a higher level of students due to campus culture. Those teachers feel like they should have seniority because they have more years of experience and have been at the school longer (known as a sense of entitlement). When administrators allow inequity such as this, it leaves mobility teachers and new teachers to instruct those students who have greater learning needs such as English as a Second Language (ESL), special education, students of color, or low income Skrla et al.
Picture a freshman in high school (fishie aka the bottom of the food tank), being humiliated in front of everyone. He is there thinking that the juniors like him. He is just a boy that tries hard to fit in, he doesn 't have anywhere else to go. One day, he gets called by a junior, doesn 't recall his name he asks him if he wanted to sit with them, so he hits with them, but then they pin him to the wall and start calling him names. The name calling doesn 't hurt as much as what they did after.
