1.0 TYPE OF DISASTER Disaster is something that happens suddenly and causes a lot of bad effects and loss to the people or residents. It can be separated into two types which are natural disaster and man-made or technological disaster. Natural disaster, including flood, tornado, fire, storm and many others. However, displaced populations, industrial accidents, and transport accidents are three of the man-made or technological disaster. The storm is one of the natural disaster and the circumstance of bad weather with strong winds, thunders and even heavy rain. This was the main disaster cause the death of at least five hundred people in the MV Senopati Nusantara. The negligence of the local officials of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) did not get the accurate prediction. However, the officials of the port still issued a sailing license and allow the vessel from sailing based on the not accurate weather report. Due to the no accurate report, the captain of the MV Senopati Nusantara, Wiratno Cendanawasih, has to undertake the responsibility because he was giving the responsibility to keep the passengers safe and out of danger. Thus, the captain was convicted three years in jail. The maritime disaster of the MV Senopati Nusantara was mainly caused by the stormy weather and the carelessness of the captain. Therefore, it caused about five hundred people dead. However, there was only one hundred and seventeen-seven people had been confirmed survive by the rescue activity in the first twenty-four hour. Many passengers tried covering the hole and others called for help with a satellite phone. Six long hours later, help from the Italian coast guard came. Everybody on board survived due to the steadfast thinking of the passengers. When they saw the hole, they could have just said “we're done for” and given up, but they kept trying to think of solutions to save everyone on board. Natural disasters are unfortunate events that cause damage to the surrounding environment and its inhabitants. These events can be disasters such as earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes. In the article, “In Their Own Words: Resilience among Haitian Survivors of the 2010 Earthquake”, it was stated that resilience after these natural disasters is “...‘acceptance of conditions,’ as solidarity demonstrated by ‘Haitians helping Haitians’” (581). To overcome the disasters, the inhabitants of the affected area must connect as a community. It is imperative for the survival of the affected people that this is done because the connections help the people to push through the aftermath of the disaster.
Many of the men who died in the water during the five days died because they lost hope that they'd be rescued. Hope will push anyone to do anything. A wife to move on after her husband's passing, a cancer patient to keep moving forward, and stranded sailors to continue living. These small acts of hope are what many survivors claimed kept them going during those terrible nights.
