Serial: Season One In season one of Sarah Koenig’s podcast, Serial, Koenig challenges the legitimacy of the Maryland justice system in the conviction of Adnan Syed. Jay Wilds is influential in the case of the murder of Hae Min Lee, and his testimony was the primary source for Adnan Syed’s conviction. Koenig examines corrupt interactions between the court and Jay Wilds. Jay delineated the main timeframe for the prosecution to use against Syed. Additionally, Wilds’ deceit is revealed within recorded testimonies with the giving of contradictory evidence such as the location Hae’s body was revealed and timeline changes. The given timeframe from afar looks perfect, but there are various discrepancies between Jay's story and the evidence used to …show more content…
Ultimately, Wilds was changing his narrative of what occurred on January 13, 1999. Whether the changes were intentional or a fluke it is very important to consider why the justice system did not scrutinize these inconsistencies. An essential piece of evidence Jay has modified through his testimonies is, ”In the first statement he says Adnan mentions it that same day, January 13, while they’re driving Adnan back to school at lunchtime. In the second taped statement he says Adnan told him the night before and also that Adnan had been talking about it for four or five days already. When he testifies at trial though, he goes back to the first version that he first heard about it from Adnan on the thirteenth,” (in-text citation). This quote expresses the adjustments made by Jay to his testimony about when he is told that Syed was planning on killing Hae Min Lee. This difference can come off as subtle and not a big deal, but on the other hand, it could be possible that Jay is attempting to make himself look less involved in the case. Jay manipulated information that can cause him to get in trouble, while the judicial system just acts like it never happened. In essence, modifications similar to the testimony should have been looked into by the authority instead of being neglected. In …show more content…
Therefore, Jay was in control of stating all the details regarding the events that transpired on January 13th. Jay was left with Adnan’s phone the afternoon of the disappearance, accordingly, all of the phone calls made that day were logged to background check the timeline provided by Jay. The timeline designed was not fully accurate, some phone calls did not match the story or times that the police were told happened. ”By trial, though, Jay has sorted that out, so that his story better matched the call log. He testified that he called Jenn Pusateri first, at 3:21 to find out if Patrick was home. Jenn testified that, no, Jay would not have called her to find out where Patrick was,” (in-text citation). Jay has switched his remembrance of the day to better match the evidence that the police had. This is giving himself more credibility which causes Syed to look more and more guilty. Though the changes matched the story they still did not make full sense and were rebuked by people called that day. This should raise a red flag in the minds of the prosecution, but with most of the mistakes made by Jay, it was ignored. That being said, Jay would change his story around to make himself appear credible, and the authority went along with his scheme by not investigating the changes. The authority predominantly
This is what checks out about the conviction. The neighborhood boy that witnessed Adnan showing Haes body to Jay, seems to be the exact same story that Jay confirmed at the trial. However, Koenig explains how the neighborhood boy saw a movie and it could be possible that it adapted to this story; witnessing something traumatizing would be something to be able to tell
This Reveals Syed Wrong actions as it connects with the timeline of the calls given by the AT&T records and thus proving Adnan Syed being responsible because the whole story is adding up and connecting to wilds story. Likewise, the testimonies of witnesses proves Syed to be guilty as charged, as it adds up to create a story that proves him as a criminal. In the crime scene 4 witnesses are interviewed or info is obtained from them. According to wilds, Pusateri and vinson, “Wilds contacted Pusateri and asked her to pick him up at the Westview Mall… then he told her that Syed killed Lee that afternoon and placed her in the trunk of her car… he returned to Vinson’s house for the rest of the evening... Vinson testified that Syed and Wilds stopped by her apartment around 6 pm” and According to McClain, McClain had written Syed a letter… reminding him that she … had seen him at the Woodlawn Public Library… before 3 p.m. on January 13.
His testimony should have been further investigated at the least because of this. However, it was not, and since Jay was the only witness to the burial of the body, his word was
Jay knew things that he wasn’t telling the cops or he was simply hiding something. Wouldn’t it be better to just tell the truth rather than make up a whole bunch of different stories? Some might think that Adnan was the cause of Hae Min Lee’s death because he was her ex-boyfriend and he had a motive to kill her. However, the night Hae went missing Adnan still tried to make sure she was ok and hung out with people that kept trying to check up on her. For example, in Serial it says “Adnan called her house 3 times to check to see if she was okay because she didn’t pick up her cousin that day”.
Not only did Christina not contact Adnan’s sole alibi, she also didn’t attempt to disprove the one story that Adnan’s trial was based off of. After receiving word that Gerald Grant told the court about the specularity of the cell phone records, an affidavit from Abraham Waranowitz was written. "If I had been made aware of this disclaimer, it would have affected my testimony," (Crimesider Staff). Waranowitz had previously testified that the cell phone records were what placed Syed at the burial site. If Christina had just argued this point and focused on the unreliability of cell phone records, she could have made the prosecution's evidence useless against Syed.
The prosecution case against Adnan Syed was mainly based on the testimony of Jay wilds, who said he helped bury Hae Min Lee's body. Jay's testimony was supported by the cell phone records that placed Adnan on the site on the Day Hae Min Lee disappeared. According to the prosecution, the evidence sayed that Adnan had a motive to Kill Hae, because he was jealous and possessive of her. However, there are inconsistinces in Jay’s testimony, which has changed multiple times over the years. Some people also claimed that He was pressured into providing false testimony by the police.
In Episode 1, host Sarah Koenig highlights how the prosecution's timeline of events is riddled with inconsistencies and relies heavily on the memory of key witnesses, including Jay Wilds. Jay's changing story is documented in Episode 8, where he admits to providing false statements during the trial. It's worth noting that the prosecution's case against Adnan Syed relied heavily on circumstantial evidence,
In this testimony, Jay incriminates Adnan by saying he was shown Hae’s body and made to help Adnan bury her. Cell phone records and other testimonies corroborated Jay’s version. However, during the multiple retellings of his testimony, Jay’s story had several inconsistencies. During the trial and his interviews, Jay’s testimonies have wildly different versions of where he was shown the body, whether Adnan planned the murder ahead of time, where the murder took place, as well as many others details. Jay was also told by the detectives that, if he failed to incriminate Adnan, he would be the primary suspect in the case.
Jay Wild’s is a former classmate of Adnan he is the first one in which pointed fingers towards Adnan. Sarah is arguing Adnan case in court in a hope for a fair trial. After hearing serial for twelve episodes hearing different perspectives they have made me think he is guilty even more after they have seen the case again and he was still proven to be guilty. Adnan has had variety reasons to make him seem guilty but the Nisha call, Adnan poor memory in recalling what happened and the Leakin Park cell towers was the most important
Each of the alibi from Jay and Adnan were different ,except that he and Jay went to different places after Adnan track practice, but what was most shocking was during the time school end to 3:04 the time Jay said Adnan called him. It was impossible to do the exact thing as the day went because that was the day the bus left because the left way later than it was needed about 15 mins. The next logical place was the library where Adnan said he was but it was packed that day so it would be extremely difficult to kill someone at the library or the best buy. If people say he was at the Library it would’ve shut out Jay’s alibi and he couldn't change how he said Adnan Syed murder
Although in another interview, he states they both dug the hole. The details Jay gives continue to shift and become inconsistent. He has changed details multiple times including when Adnan and Jay talked about when he was going to kill her. In the first trial, Jay states they talked on the day of the murder. However, in the second trial, Jay says they talked about it 4-5 days before the murder happened.
When the cops first bring Jay in on February 28th, they talked to him for about an hour before the tape went on. Then, on March 15th, the second interview. Jay signs his initials to an official explanation of rights form at 3:15 p.m. Then the tape starts.” She brings evidence to discredit Jay and the detectives in the case.
However, the beginning ends with detectives interviewing Jay, an acquaintance of Adnan, who claims that Adnan repeatedly spoke about murdering Hae, and called him when he had supposedly
He testified that he helped Adnan bury Hae Min Lee's body, and his testimony was used as evidence against Adnan in the trial. Jay's testimony has been called into question and was a central point of discussion in the Serial podcast. Jay Wilds' testimony was called into question by some people, including the creators of the Serial podcast, because of inconsistencies in his statements. For example, Jay provided different accounts of where and when he saw Adnan and Hae's car on the day of the murder, and he changed his story about when he learned that Hae had been killed. Additionally, Jay's testimony was not supported by other evidence in the case, such as phone records, which seemed to contradict his claims about his movements on the day of the murder.
She states “A year after Adnan was arrested and the case came to trial, Jay walked up to the witness stand. There’s a moment when Adnan muttered something to him” (45). By Adnan calling Jay pathetic he showed that he couldn’t believe Jay would rat him out. This incident shows that Adnan is a liar and is mad at Jay for going to the police, showing that he is guilty. Even after controlling himself through the whole case he snapped when he saw the man that betrayed him.
