For me, from the moment of the election of the Service Learning Project, I didn't like the simple fact of having to “work for free,” and the idea was transformed into a boring activity to do with the mere purpose of completing the project. However, as I started to help at the food pantry, I became aware of how wrong I was and my opinion about the social service changed, I realized how the simple fact of providing support to the most disadvantaged groups of society, was very
For my service leaning assignment, I volunteered at the Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival in support of the Montgomery County Food Bank receiving donations at the festival entrance. In volunteering at the event, I learned the differences in service learning, volunteerism and community service and will provide details in what I learned a about each. I will also provide details and examples of teamwork, communication and networking experiences gained while at the event. A brief overview of the Montgomery County Food bank will also be provided with information on the assignment task, measurable success and interaction with fellow students and organization directors.
The move to New York was planned with Jeannette’s sister Lori after their father stole a lump of the money they had saved from working odd jobs. “Lori would leave by herself for New York and use it to get established, so that by the time I arrived, everything would be set” (223) Jeannette was determined to move to New York and start a new life. When Jeannette arrived in New York she experienced a sense of freedom and independence that she never had before. Jeannette was able to make her own decisions and mistakes without the judgment of her parents. A research paper by JC Wilson “Service-learning and the development of empathy in US college students” its findings are about the development of college students who participate in service learning assignments.
As for Service, I’ve always enjoyed aiding others in any way possible. I find a particular sense of fulfillment when I’m able to be of use to others. To me it’s so much more than getting the service done, it’s about making a difference in someone’s life. I come from a background where very few people helped my parents when
The objective or mission of my project is to help teach homeless people job skills to better equip them for the workforce. The desired result is to help people develop the skills needed to acquire and maintain gainful employment. My ultimate objective is to prolong the life span of the homeless population in metro Atlanta. With that being said, I have decided to do my service learning project at the Atlanta Mission. The Atlanta Mission is a non-profit organization that is based out of Atlanta and their primary objective is to eliminate homelessness within the city.
Service to me means, giving your all to you school and community without expecting anything in return. At a young age, I participated in many fundraising events with my dance team where we provided a service to others such as annual car washes, waiting tables at various restaurants, and organizing dances and activities for kids. In Junior High I was a key club member and we volunteered for concession stand duties, helped out at elementary basketball tournaments, and acted as line judges or referees at volleyball tournaments. Since my mom is a first grade teacher, I spent many summers setting up and organizing her classroom, and on my days off from school, I provided kids in my mom’s classroom with help in reading or math. As a part of Earth Week at our school, I did various jobs for people in my community.
My Service Learning Project had been planned accordingly thanks to my family, I had volunteered with my family at the homeless shelter to serve food and give necessities to the homeless before Christmas time. My personal involvement with the homeless was absolutely attending their priorities such as toiletry, food, assistance, etc. as well as providing a warm hand to be open minded with. I previously had friends who relied on the homeless shelter, and I had credible knowledge on what the homeless were asking for in terms of help. I would engage in involvement or communication with some of the homeless to not only provide their necessities, but positive social interaction.
In addition, it has been influential to my life. Service does not just benefit the person doing the task, but it also impacts the individuals receiving the aid. Several people may not know it, but serving is something that can be done every day. I have shown qualities of service through school activities and my community. For instance, participating in Key Club and my church youth group for many years has kept me involved in serving.
The overall semester definitely had its up’s and downs . As a Peer Mentor I have learned to appreciate my hardwork much more and also learned that speaking up a lot is key to key action to many things. One of my goals for the semester as a Peer Mentor was to get to know my peer mentees on a friendship level or maybe as acquaintances. That goal actually came true in a way because I only made three acquaintances only. Another goal I had throughout the semester was to go outside of my comfort zone a little, I really didn 't like to talk in front of the class.
This week I met with a social worker at Cherry Health which is located a few blocks from Heart of the City. When I met with the social worker we did a role playing exercise. She played a client that was experiencing depression and sadness. In addition, she role played as a client that she typically work with at the agency and I role played as the therapist. I enjoyed the role play because I was able to receive feedback about my progress.
Hearing negatives from service users at times made me feel that it was impossible to achieve as a social worker as I never heard any positive feedback. I do feel it would have been beneficial to hear from someone who was really happy with the support that they had received from social services just to give us the incentive that it is possible to make positive changes. However, I feel that I am now more determined because of negative feedback to be a positive influence when I become a social worker and be the best that I can be. According to The New Social Worker (2016), It is important to be mindful that hearing from service users and their advice on how we should be as social workers is their view and opinion on what they fell would have been best for them, everyone is a unique person and will require different services and tactics in every
In the program, we have initiated to what I consider the “second phase” of 2nd year field placement. The process came by really quick, in which to a moment I felt unprepared. It is amazing to think how quick time is flying. It is simultaneously exciting but nerve-racking. This semester has been a really tough one.
Student Service Learning Project Reflection I. Summarize the issue and life-span stage that you chose as a focus for your website page. a. Why did you choose this life-span stage? I like the early childhood stage because of the numerous factors that children come across. In this stage, the child is learning right from wrong and most of the times those rituals remain with that child in the near future. Early Childhood development is based on the physical, cognitive, and emotional growth and change.
Through the readings of the last week, I have learned a great deal about ‘Service Learning’. It is a combination of teaching and learning approach for teaching public health issues and improving health literacy. It is an integration of academic learning and community services to strengthen civic engagement. It is helpful in promoting cooperation, teamwork, civic responsibility, solving complex problems etc. (Service learning, 2016).
This experience has shown me that there is so much more than just standing in front of a classroom and teaching students. As a teacher your contract hours may consist of 35 hours a week, but your actual hours are more like 60 hours a week. As a teacher you not only teach, you also attend meetings, hold parent conference meetings, grade papers, create lesson plans, act as a role model for all of your students, help with curriculum nights, assist on different teams and committees and a multitude of other duties. This service learning experience has better prepared me to become a teacher. I now know how I want to run my own classroom, how to incorporate engaging activities into my lessons, how to control a classroom, and several other teaching
Community service does not only have a profound impact on our community, but the impact it has on the individual people is even greater. The concept of community service has always been something that I grew up with, and now that I am older I better understand how important community service is for society. I have participated in community service activities. Starting in elementary school, I helped feed the homeless and rescue animals. Even with my wide range of volunteer experience, it was difficult to find an activity that would be meaningful and fulfill my thirty-hour obligation for my senior project.
