Morals and science have long collided over whether teens should or should not be taught how to have safe sex in school. Sexual education teaches teenagers abstinence until marriage and about the use of contraceptives during sex. However, due to moral and religious concerns, teaching students about contraceptives and safe sex in school has become a taboo, when such information should be used to encourage teenagers to make good choices, which is a stark contrast to how contraceptives and sex are considered a necessity for social stability, and are almost worshipped, in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World.
The purpose of sexual education is to spread information on safe sex. This issue has a long history in American society, but beginning “in 1981

There is a strong correlation between parents who have religious beliefs and parents who approve of abstinence. One such example is “a core group of mothers” a woman named Gort “calls the "prayer warriors" [gathered] regularly at [Gort’s] house to pray. The prayer warriors prayed for the success of the abstinence class in their cars, while walking, or sometimes even in the hallways and parking lots outside important sexuality-committee meetings” (Lerner). These mothers leave the fate of their children’s well being in the hands of a deity rather than relying on proven science to educate their children. Religion is so ingrained in American society that such an unreliable source of information is relied upon in the education system. However, during Brave New World’s version of mass, which is called solidarity service, the participants go around a circle chanting “"Orgy-porgy.. Orgy-porgy, Ford and fun, kiss the girls…"” (Huxley 85), and at the end of the service all the participants collapse in the circle and partake in sexual activities. Because giving birth is considered taboo in this society, yet sex is so heavily encouraged, having a good sex education and contraceptive system is paramount to uphold society’s ideals. It is considered normal, even necessary …show more content…
There are many other, more beneficial, methods of sex education, with the most popular one being comprehensive sex education. Many pro-abstinence supporters believe that comprehensive sex education encourages young teenagers to go out and have sex. However, “[r]esearch clearly shows that comprehensive sex education programs do not encourage teens to start having sexual intercourse; do not increase the frequency with which teens have intercourse; and do not increase the number of a teen 's sexual partners” (Frohnapfel-Krueger). Despite most pro-abstinence people’s beliefs, there is significant proof to support that talking about the consequences of sex does not encourage teens to have sex. As well, it is safer for the teens that do have sex to know how to do so safely than to just assume that no teen will have premarital sex. Given that so many students will not abstain from sex, “programs have an obligation to help teens understand the risks and responsibilities that come with sexual activity. Survey after survey indicates that adolescents have a tremendous unmet need for information related to sexuality, contraception, STDs, and making sexual decisions” (Government Should Fund Sex Education). Comprehensive sex education will prepare teens in the event that they chose to not stay abstinent. It will teach them how to make good choices and how to weigh the benefits and consequences of their actions, because it is impossible to make an accurate decision without knowing all of
I find that just preaching abstinence, as the only way to go is not effective sexual education. It’s key that we teach about birth control and Sexually Transmitted Infections as our society is becoming more sexually active so it’s important that they learn how to have safe sex. Planned Parenthood encourages its patients to make informed decisions and provide an environment where they feel comfortable to ask any questions. If people don’t practice safe sex, they are at risk of getting a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STIs).
It is also important that we provide accurate and proven sexual classes to our students. More than 80% of Americans believe that a form of sexual education should be taught in schools.5 The majority of these people believe that this education should be focused on various forms of birth control. Currently the federal government provides funds for these evidence-based types of education through the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative and the Personal Responsibility Education Program. I will support programs that seek to expand funding for programs that teach a variety of birth control methods
Emma Elliott, a writer for the Concerned Women for America organization, compiled a pamphlet in 2005 in support of an abstinence-only based sexual education system. Elliott establishes her argument in a unique countering organization. She presents a popular claim about sexual education and then refutes it with a reason supporting abstinence. In general, she includes eight mainstream beliefs. The first one is rather general where she refutes that “Abstinence education doesn't work”, and she continues to say that is does and backs up her argument with multiple studies, such as the program “Best Friends” caused 80% less possibility of sexual activity.
In today’s modern society, sex education is seen as one of the seven plagues of Egypt. Let’s face reality, kids as young as 10 years old are having sex. According to the public health data, the chlamydia rate among teenagers have sky rocked by 80 per cent in the past two decades. Is this the result of ignorance or the lack of knowledge? In the article “The Sex Ed Revolution: a portrait of the powerful political bloc that’s waging war on Queen’s Park” by Nicholas Hune-Brown, published in Toronto Life magazine on September, 3, 2015 parents are opposed to the new sex education curriculum for various reasons.
Professor Ross Government 2306 8 February 2015 Is Abstinence-only education the correct approach for Texas? Owning one of the highest rates of teen pregnancies in the Union, Texas has an abstinence only approach in sexual education to try to reduce pregnancies? In addition to this, Texas ranks first as being the top spender in sexual education, but can’t get solidified results out of its spending. Texas doesn’t teach anything about contraception, how the Texas Department of State Health Services has said that the mission of the program is to delay sexual actions among teenagers until they are old enough, and the use of abstinence only education to protect children from explicit content only to find out in their own way leads to curiosity
On a larger scale, a conservative “think tank” The Carter Center, works in advancing international human rights and ending suffering. A large part of what the members of the Carter Center work for is to improve education including sexual education. The founder of the Carter Center wrote a collection of papers for the Carter Center titled Promoting Positive and Healthy Behaviors in Children and included in this collection, a paper titled A Developmental Strategy for Lifelong Benefit was written by David A. Hamburg, a member of the Carter Center. His paper touched upon the essential requirements for child development and what education providers need to be teaching to guarantee that students have a healthy development. The Carter Center's beliefs that sexual
Dating. It has always been a major aspect of the American lifestyle. From depicting relationships in magazines, to major Hollywood productions, to comic books, dating is everywhere. Dating itself has evolved, modernized and redefined itself after each passing generation. From the days where a woman 's hand in marriage was traded for land and property to the Tinder hookups of today, dating is nothing like it used to be.
Those of us who are thirty years and older may recall a curriculum that was fear and judgment based, and that the only acceptable sex education was an abstinence-only based curriculum, and you are told only about the dangers of sex. American’s have been told that sex is something sinful, so naturally talking about something so sinful is very uncomfortable. However, the interest in sex, stills remains, and we as humans, are both interested and disgusted simultaneously. Moreover, Vernacchio asks his students what they might imagine there own ‘first moment’ to be like.
Families can have that big effect on them because it they came from a religious family they will have a different output on the pregnancy. Which usually that live in a religious homes do try to act out to show that they just want to be independent. religion can make the teenager homeless because the family will not deal with that kind of behavior which can make it difficult for the teen to cope with. However, this does have the sexual norms that the acceptance of premarital sex. Premarital sex does go against almost every religion because its sex before marriage and in religious homes they want there teenagers to not have sex until their married.
Have you ever wondered how teen parents live and survive in the world we live in today? Amanda was a teenage girl who didn’t mean to get pregnant. She found out when she went to the doctors for stomach aches. The next day she told her mother and her mother is very disappointed in her. After a few weeks went by, she moved in with her baby’s daddy.
Introduction 1. Attention Getter: The provision of sex education in schools has been a controversial subject matter among different education stakeholders ranging from parents to educators. A focus, however, on the prevalence of adolescents’ abortion, pregnancy, and HIV and AIDS rates indicates significantly high rates.
II. 1st paragraph: Studies done in the University of Georgia show the importance of sex education in a macro scale of just the US, but other research has been done on a micro scale in Memphis, Tennessee that other angles like economics must also be taken into account as to what the consequences are of no sex education or abstinence-only education. A. A
Why Sex Education is Important in School ? Sex is an essential aspect of human life. It is a natural phenomenon and without applying it the cycle of the human being cannot move ahead or cannot assume. Sex as being such an important part of our life, it is necessary for all to move detail knowledge and information about sex education. Regarding sex education everyone has their one perception.
Using their views on the accessibility of birth control, Planned Parenthood has been educating teens in schools about being sexually active and the different Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) that students could put themselves at risk for (Who We Are, 2014). Teaching kids about sex in school as a mandatory course has some mixed reviews. Some parents think that is not ethical to bring intercourse to the thoughts of their children when they should be learning more from their core curriculums. On the other hand, teenagers are known to have sex regardless if it is to their parents knowledge or not and the parents find it okay to enlighten the child about this type of
The likelihood of an effective abstinence only sex ed is statistically improbable in this day and age, given the fact that more than 80% of 19 year olds have already become sexually active (Source A). This statistic can be paired with the fact that the average marriage age is 26.5 years old for women and nearly 30 years old for men. Abstinence only policies may have seemed like a strong idea many years ago, when the concept of sex ed was just being formed, but now society’s morals have shifted. Years ago, when a girl became pregnant out of marriage, she had no other option than to get married, give up on her dreams, and raise her child. Now, there are many options for unwanted pregnancy, including adoption, abortion, or simply working hard and keeping the baby.
