Sexual assault and harassment has been an ongoing problem. Women are being abused, mistreated, and taken advantage of. Sexual assault is when one person touches another person without that person 's consent. For example, rape is a form of sexual assault. Sexual harassment is similar, but it may be less extreme. It is when someone makes unwanted sexual advancements or obscene remarks toward another person. An example of sexual harassment is catcalling. The victims of sexual assault or harassment suffer from many different things after their experience. These acts of injustice are often seen in the work place. After victims suffer from sexual assault or harassment they go through many different things. One major thing victims tend to suffer from is anxiety and depression. This is common, because many people are traumatized after their experience. They begin to think that perhaps what happened is their fault. Although many may feel this way, it is not their fault. It does not matter what they were wearing or if they had a little too much to drink. Regardless of the situation, it is not the victims fault. They also become very fearful, because they are afraid of something similar happening again. Some people change their regular routines to avoid harassers and to lower their chances of something like that happening again. Others change jobs, drop out of school, stop a hobby that they love and even move out of their home. But, the one thing that was not mentioned above was reporting their incident. Many people do not report what happened to them, because they are afraid too (Chatterjee, 2018). Victims tend to feel powerless and threatened by their harassers. They develop a fear of what could happen to them, their families and their jobs if they did speak up. It has given women a voice to speak out about their experiences. Sexual assault and harassment is "thriving on the silence of women", but because of the #MeToo movement, people are breaking their silence. Sexual assault and harassment happens in many different places. It occurs in public places, the workplace, people 's homes, etc. Although many people are skeptical of the movement, there is hard evidence that sexual assault and harassment is real and happening to innocent people. Many women have come forward with their experience of being sexually assaulted or harassed. An online survey was done, and it revealed that 81 percent of women and 43 percent of men have experienced some form of sexual assault or harassment during their life. The survey involved people of ages 28 and above for the most part and it included the experiences that women have faced. This involved verbal forms of sexual harassment such as catcalled, whistled at, or inappropriate comments of a sexual nature. The survey revealed that 77 percent of women have experienced verbal assault. 51 percent have been sexually touched without their permission, 41 percent have been sexually harassed online, 27 percent have survived sexual assault, and 47 percent of transgender people report being sexually assaulted at some point in their lives, both in and out of the work place (Chatterjee, 2018).
