He talks about things from the “establishment, that which [he] first formed, called the Union Fire Company” (Franklin 82) which was a big deal back then to inventing a new fireplace. He writes about his good deeds because Franklin wants to show what good Americans can do. His son would probably not have care as much, but the general public would care how Americans can prosper. Part three is all about how he prospered, how he lived the ‘American Dream’ Some believe that Benjamin Franklin wrote about his good deeds because he wanted to show Great Britain how great America was. He wanted to show that they could grow and prosper, that the Americans do not need Great Britain to survive, that they are fine by themselves, maybe ever
Regarded as arguably the greatest mind in literature, William Shakespeare spent much of his 52 years writing. Not only is he remembered as a master wordsmith, he also wrote as if he was running out of time. On top of writing poetry and making time for other pursuits, Shakespeare somehow managed to produce nearly forty plays in a span of 23 years. As if that is not enough, Shakespeare also reshaped the English language more to his liking, by creating nearly 1700 new words. A master of the theatre, Shakespeare did more than simply create plays, but truly captured the essence of the theatre.
The tragic hero is a literary device used to show the flaws of human nature; however this model can also pertain to real-life individuals in our society. For example, a Shakespearean tragic hero in real-life would be Robin Williams, a famous comedian who was adored by all. Essentially, nobility is distinguished by being upper class and having elevated character. In Robin Williams’ case he satisfies both specifications; as a child Williams grew up in a rich family and he obtained respect and notoriety by making others joyful . Additionally, Williams hamartia, or his fatal error that ultimately brings about his doom, lies in the depression that he struggles with his entire life.
In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, Marcus Brutus, demonstrates a kind of a person who can go against his friend not because he hates him, but because he loves his country more. William Shakespeare is known throughout the world for his poems and tragic plays. From Romeo and Juliet to Hamlet, they are all known and studied through our modern educational system. Julius Caesar is the main topic, it’s about a man who is too fixated on the well being of his kingdom that he doesn’t realize that that’ll be his downfall. Mini Biography: Julius Caesar (c. July 12 or 13, 100 BC to March 15, 44 BC) was a politically adept and popular leader of the Roman Republic who significantly transformed what became known as the Roman Empire by greatly expanding its geographic reach and establishing its imperial system.
As America evolves throughout the twentieth century, so does what people view as important, which adds on to what the American Dream means. The culture of the 1920s encouraged spending and materialism so people sought money, power, and expensive items to make them happy. In the Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby, who is the epitome of the 1920s American Dream, saw that becoming rich and notable was the only way to get his Dream which was Daisy: “She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me.”(Fitzgerald, ch 7) Furthermore, despite the fact that Tom was born with a silver spoon, he still felt he didn’t have the American Dream because Gatsby was more popular than him: “I know I’m not very popular. I don’t have big parties. I suppose you’ve got to
Jonson vs Shakespeare The works of William Shakespeare and Ben Jonson are known around the world. They knew each other personally and they were friends as well as rivals. William Shakespeare is regarded as the greatest English writer. Ben Jonson wrote of Shakespeare, “He was not of an age, but for all time.” He was baptized on April 26, 1564 and died on April 23, 1616. Since he lived in Elizabethan England life was very hard for him because he wasn’t born into a family of wealth or nobility and he didn’t have a great education.
“Because he can administer it for the community far better than it could or would have done itself.”(Document E) Carnegie helped society change in a way that they will understand that not all rich people are ignorant with their money. He also made them believe that they can achieve more than they think they can. His story developed people to change the way society was looked at. Carnegie dint only change people but he changed America. That is someone I can call a
During the industrial revolution, leaders of industrialism were brilliant, innovated, and ambitious men who rejuvenated the American economy decades after the Civil War. Andrew Carnegie is one of these industrial leaders who had a positive impact on society. He is considered to be a true “captain of industry” (Shi, "Robber Barons") , not just because of the businesses he developed, but because of his desire to better society for all people and not just for himself (Shi, "Robber Barons"). Carnegie believed that those of mass wealth should make a moral choice to make it their responsibility to share their wealth for the utilitarianism of society. 1.)
Class and agency are arguably some of the most important factors in Shakespeare's plays. For example, because the capulets and the montagues are both noble houses, they are able to have enough interaction with each other that they have a strong hatred. Class and agency influence the characters’ education and actions in shakespeare's romeo and juliet because many of the events would not have happened without class and class affected much of who the person was during the renaissance. Romeo and Juliet would not have even met if they had different classes, let alone get married and die for eachother. For example, in act I scene II in Shakespeare’s romeo and Juliet, a Capulet servant asks Romeo “Perhaps you learned it without book ,but I pray, can you read?”.
Jay Gatsby wanted to make a rich man out of himself and when he did he moved to West Egg. West Egg is for the “New Rich” and it shows in Gatsby’s demeanor. Gatsby had worked and even been a criminal in order to make his fortune but nonetheless he realized the American Dream. Fitzgerald too depicts the American Dream. Fitzgerald rushed to make many novels and short stories in order to make to have his slice of fame and fortune (Willett).
