When organizations allow nurses to participate in shared governance, it gives the nurses professional autonomy (Bednarski, 2009). “It empowers nurses to contribute collaboratively to the decision-making process related to nursing practice, practice standards, and procedures” (Bednarski, 2009, para. 1). Nurses provide a vital role in the health care system. Sure, we may not be able to diagnose or write prescriptions. However, we are the main advocates for the patients. My biggest concern with improving quality care and patient safety issues in that, the responsibility is not ours alone, our Chief Nurse Executives (CNEs) and Director of Nursing (DON), and senior nursing management staffs to lead the journey Disch J. (2008). I find it overwhelming that the majority of the research literature (studies, surveys and reports believe nursing plays the pivotal role in changing the face of health care and improving quality care and patient safety.

Essential II outlines how an APN can utilize organizational and systems leadership to promote safer and more cost effective care to patients. I got to see several ways that nurses provide care for their patients. I observed ICU nurses care for their ill, elderly patients. I witnessed physical therapy nurses assist their patients to ambulate immediately post-surgery. I noticed how fast ER nurses work to triage their patients. I learned a lot from those nurses but could not decide which unit was meant for me.

Of course, it also help to solve the problem of nursing shortage, provide flexibility in management and save the healthcare operational cost. Delegation relay on delegators’ knowledge, skills, judgement, ethics, personalities, communication styles and co-operation between delegators and delegates (Cipriano, 2010). With the influence of all these variables, delegation is not a simple skill or task.

According to Marquis and Houston (2012), “In shared governance, the organization’s governance is shared among board members, nurses, physicians, and management” (p. 270-271). I am a member of Unit Practice Council (UPC) in my unit which represents for the unit-based aspect of the shared governance model in nursing. UPC is front line nursing staff making decisions about nursing on the unit they work on. Our team members are mainly bedside nurse assistants and nurses in the unit. We are responsible for attending meetings, reporting activities, discuss issues and decide how to resolve the issues. We are currently working on several - main topics.
