Mick Fanning and Julian Wilson were competing in the J-Bay Open in Jeffrey’s Bay in South Africa. As the men were swimming out into the bay on their surf boards Fanning’s board was attacked by the great white shark. The shark grabbed the cord by Fanning’s ankle. Fanning was dragged off the board and into the water, but he kicked, punched and screamed at the shark and took his ankle cord off. This they believe saved his life. The shark swam away and the boats were able to rescue Fanning without any scratches. It is a miracle that he was not hurt or killed.
