Psychology according to behaviourists is the scientific study of mental processes, its main goal being to control behaviour (Watson 1913). There are many theoretical perspectives that help identify factors that influence behaviour and these include the behaviourist approach, the psycho-dynamic approach and the socio-cultural approach. Thabani as cited in the case study is going through a phase of emotional distress and this is impacting his behaviour. The psycho-dynamic approach and the socio-cultural approach might help to identify the source of his problems. Children tend to develop as they participate in socio-cultural activities (Martin, Nelson& Tobach1995). The sociocultural approach analyses how the social and cultural environments impact …show more content…
Baron, Byrne & Suls (1989:6) define Social psychology as the study of the nature and a means of understanding the causes of individual behaviour in social situations, people tend to behave in a certain way due to social and cultural factors Stevenson(as cited in Santrock J.W. 2005: 15). Sociocultural approach stresses that there is a relationship between knowledge and socio-cultural practises (John-Steiner & Mahn 2011). This approach also not only compares behaviour in different countries but also behaviour of people within the the same country but different cultural groups Matsimuto (as cited in John-Steiner & Mahn, 2011). Thabani was raised to be a well-mannered young boy by his grandmother as he took part in traditional rituals with his friends. He then moved to a local university to study and therefore stopped participating in traditional rituals. In University, Thabani was mixed up with people from different cultural groups, he might have failed to adapt, that is why his behaviour changed. In the past, Thabani worked hard and passed in school most probably because of the learning environment where he was surrounded by people from the same cultural and social group. When he had time, Thabani would go out and play and this made him happy as a child. Thabani no longer had a social life; he became depressed more than usual. This resulted in Thabani loosing hope in life. Therefore socio-cultural factors …show more content…
He walked to school every day and had never used any mode of transport that is why he was afraid of using moving vehicles. Thabani remembered being constantly sad and depressed maybe because his father had abandoned as a child, abandonment by the father might be the cause of Thabani feeling worthless in his adult life. As Thabani continued to repress all these memories, his adulthood life was influenced by his unconscious mind where his behaviour was unknowingly being impacted by his
There are a variety of cultural differences depicted throughout the world. Beliefs systems and social groups in our society today are based on a person’s background history, upbringing, and consciousness. One major aspect of a social group is the study of double consciousness or the internal conflict. The presence of two unconnected streams of consciousness in one individual or experienced by subordinated groups in an oppressive society in comparison to one’s own individuality or the quality that makes one person or thing different from all others. How a person feels about themselves and the intrapersonal relationship that occurs within the individual mind or self has a great impact on a person’s life.
1. Provide an example of one age graded influence, one history graded influence and one non-normative event that you have experienced. Explain it so that I know you understand the definition of the various influences. 2. Briefly describe the differences between psychoanalytic theories, behaviorists/social learning theories, Cognitive Developmental theories, Information Processing theories and Sociocultural/Ecological theories (remember to include pertinent terms).
Being surrounded by people of different cultural backgrounds can be overwhelming as shown in “When Worlds Collide” by Pico Iyer, and the way a person perceives them is influenced by their own culture. Although there are many factors that affect an individual’s perspective of the world, culture always shapes perception because it introduces a basis for what is usual in life and what is uncommon in their eyes. In An Indian Father’s Plea, culture strongly influences Wind-Wolf, the speaker’s son, in all aspects of his life. Wind-Wolf has been raised with certain values that have changed the way he interacts with others.
Personal history is a major aspect of the socio-cultural dimension, because it includes peer relationships and leisure activities the client engages

The Socio-behaviorist theory (behaviorism) Socio-behaviorists often study how children 's experiences model their behaviors (Nolan & Raban, 2015). Behaviorism believes that what matters is not the development itself, but the external factors that shape children 's behaviors (Nolan & Raban, 2015). This theory demonstrates that teachers and mentors dominate and instruct child-related activities, and they decide what children should learn and how to learn (Nolan & Raban, 2015). Reinforcement, which is an essential factor that helps children to learn particular behaviors, generally refers to rewards and punishments (Nolan & Raban, 2015). Children are more likely to repeat actions that result in receiving praise; in contrast, they may ignore or abandon behaviors that make them get punishment.
We have all encountered social conformity in life, whether it has been consciously or unconsciously, by accepting the dominant culture’s expectation of us. What people say and how they behave are vastly influenced by others.” She touches on

Growing up as an Immigrant in America, you grow to learn social conformity is prevalent and plays a key role in the systematic oppression of free thinkers. Social conformity does not only dictate the way you view issues but also makes you shy away from letting your own beliefs be heard. There are many ways people conform, television and social norms being the predominant forces. By having observed these behaviors at an early age, I’ve grown to develop my own moral judgment and have met like-minded individuals who share the same outlook on the ills of society. Living in a third world country, America and other European countries are practically seen as heaven on earth or the promised land.
This book is written by Eric Jones who was one of the world 's leading economic historians. He personal look at the question that many historians ask as to of whether culture determines economics or is instead determined by itself. Bringing a surplus amount of originality to the issue of cultural change over the long-term course of global economic
Anthropology studies primitive societies through ethnography in order to determine how humans develop through societal functioning and the culture they are brought up in. Freud gave several insights on psycho cultural analysis, one was that individuals daily lives are influenced by the drives of the unconscious. Psychoanalysis is unique in its ”preoccupation... with the purposes and symbolic content of thought”(LaBarre, 1968a,p.85). Freud’s psychoanalytic approach in Anthropology has been highly criticised due to many questions about personality and culture. One question was whether psychoanalytic theories of the unconscious highlight characteristics, beliefs and behaviours in non-Western populations.
Social influence theory refers to the change in behavior caused due the influence from one person to another. This change may happen intentionally or unintentionally depending on the relationship of the person with his surrounding people and the society as a whole. Social influence has three areas which are conformity, compliance and obedience. Conformity is where the change of behavior, values, and beliefs happens to fulfill the belonging and esteem needs and the approval of certain groups.
Student Name: Yan Wang Theory Critique between Cognitive Theory and Socio-cultural Theory For this assignment, I have selected two theories, cognitive theory and socio-cultural theory, to compare and contrast for further understanding children development and both theories’ implication in current education. Cognitive theory studies how people think, what’s going on within people’s mind. Social-cultural theory studies how the society, the culture, other people or external environment impact individual development. This paper would firstly respectively demonstrate both theories’ basic philosophy, representative persons and their claims.
The topic of this assignment is to discuss and analyse what factors affect human behavior and in doing so how human behavior is shaped. But before discussing that, it is important to understand what human behavior is. To define it in a few sentences or words would not be sufficient as human behavior consists of many factors and therefore contributes majorly to who we are as a person. But to put it simply, it is defined as all actions and emotions that an individual portrays in response to the different kinds of stimuli they receive no matter whether these responses are conscious or subconscious and voluntary or involuntary (Merriam-webster.com, 2015).
