Shel Silvertein: A Good Student In School

Shel Silvertein, was not a very good student in school. To him his classes were boring and he often wondered in mind, leaving him to make up stories that, to him, were way more interesting. Shel was also a very poor speller in class, that he might even be called dyslexic in today’s world. The dyslexia was due to the fact that his mind was going at a pace that his hands could not keep up with. This reigns so true that even publishers and editors complained about how he more than often, misspelled words. This happened so often that when he applied for his social security card; he even misspelled his own name, having to rewrite it twice (Rogak, Lisa 9).

When Shel entered Theodore Roosevelt High School, he walked into a class of over 4,000 students. The High School contained more than 99 classrooms with a variety of auto shops, music rooms, sewing rooms, swimming pools, auditoriums, laboratories and many more. One of the programs that he enrolled in was the (ROTC)Reserve Officer Training Corps.He enlisted at the young age of 14; receiving many honors medels.Medals such as; Officer Eagle medal and a medal of General Excellence. He was born on September 25, 1930, in Chicago Illinois. His father name was Nathan Silverstein; his mother’s name was Helen. Silverteins sibling is Peggy. Shel Silvertein won many awards in his life time. He won a Grammy Award for the song “A Boy Named Sue,”Silvertein was a child’s artist that sold over 20 million books in over 20 different languages. He is very famous for the hit book “The Giving Tree. “In 2002, he was awarded the Nashville Songwriter Hall of Fame, and in 1920 the Grammy Award (Shel Silvertein 2). In the year of 1974, Shel Silvertein made his first collection of poems for little children. Many people thought of his poems to be silly and very humours. Although, his poetry and drawings were in black, his poems were very interesting and very literal. In 1976, he brought forth a new picture book.
