Sherman Alexie uses a wide variety of writing techniques to emphasize the points he tries to get across in his book, A True Diary of a Part Time Indian, about the world and his culture. Those techniques are hyperbole, parallelism, dark humor, imagery, analogies, repetition, dialogue, and improper use of language. These techniques contribute to the creative ways Alexie portrays his culture and life. In my pastiche I used repetition, analogies, and dialogue to portray my situation as if Alexie himself wrote it. I chose to use repetition when I did this because it portrayed the way I grew up. I grew up believing if you work hard with a purpose than I will be rewarded. When struggling to survive in middle school I had forgotten about this philosophy and because of that I didn’t do to well for the first year, but when I got back to my old ways when I was in elementary school I was successful. Alexie portrays Junior’s love for making cartoons. Junior says,” I draw because words are to unpredictable, I draw because words are too limited”, (A True Diary of a Part Time Indian Pg.5). Alexie uses repetition to emphasize Junior’s belief in drawing and I use repetition to emphasize how I overcame my struggle in middle school by following what I believe in. Using analogies helped me express the way I felt about transitioning from elementary school to middle school. An analogy is the comparison of two subjects to explain the subject. I used analogies to explain my dislike for middle school. I go as far as saying middle school is like sitting through a Hitler speech or watching the Titanic sink all over again.
