Retrieved from http://thelasallian.com/2014/02/28/short-attention-spans- and-sensationalism/ Sensationalism and short attention span are common attributes of Philippine media nowadays. Media channels tend to popularize a simple story into a behemoth of raging issues and topics as they tend to leave the previous narrative without a follow through or a conclusion. Much like how the Philippine media immediately shifts its focus from a long standing political standoff between corrupt senators against the current administration to a spiral of scandals in the celebrity world. With media channels as the envoys of information …show more content…
With entries to local film festivals that leaves nothing to the imagination of the audience; Milking of movie franchises; Film makers just copying other people’s work with repetitive plot and storyline. There is a great absence for films that that makes people think; Stories that pulls the string of emotions. That inspire young people to aspire for greatness. Films are supposed to be cultural artifacts that reflect our culture. Most films are considered art, for entertainment and a powerful tool for educating or indoctrinating society. Films are powerful tools of communicating ideas and who we are as a people. Unfortunately, our films tell us and everyone else that we are shallow and …show more content…
For producers to create progressive and fresh stories. Stories that will elevate us to think beyond the current situations in real life. A hope that writers would become impassioned enough to share good stories and not just write a mishmash and rewrites of stories to meet the market quota. To devote the creative team’s enthusiasm and expertise to not just making a living but to mainly making something memorable. Reinvent the barriers of communication break-down in production. Because the creative process suffers. For actors to take acting jobs for the passion of their souls, not just for their paycheck. I wish that at least they do something to hone their craft once in a while. Wish that social media would play an active role in the growth of the industry. That they actually become movers in shaping a progressive film industry. To question beyond. To forward the thinking when everything appears to be conventional. For independent films to look beyond the reception of the people and start leading the mindset of the local audience. To give chance to make films as a privilege, not a
Movies are no longer made purely for entertainment. Filmmakers are becoming more and more drastic in trying to get their view across. Dallas Buyers Club had the audience hating Ron’s friends, and gave very little chance for any character but Ron or Rayon to have emotion. Some filmmakers use hidden messages to get their point across instead. This is often easier to take in as an audience and gets the individual thinking, instead of having a certain view forced upon them.
Negative Sensationalism Throughout the week, talk shows such as Maury and Jerry Springer are displayed on our TV screens. Whether or not a person is a vigorous viewer, the storyline of the show comes up in a conversation at least once a week. Talk shows regularly take a look into the life choices of a certain person or group of people. In the text “In Defense of Talk Shows”, Barbara Ehrenreich raises the question of the moral conflicts presented in talk shows and presents the idea that they are an exploitation of lower class people.
Not only are films entertaining, but they can have a crucial impact on society. Films can educate one's life by shining light on the political issues in society and struggles individuals face on a daily basis. A film that has a strong dialogue has the ability to open the audience's eyes to look at the world in a different perspective. The film American Son will take the audience on an emotional rollercoaster and feel an intense amount of sadness. The film demonstrates diversity, stereotypes, and finding one's identity.
Society expect to be constantly entertained; they have become so concerned with things such as who the latest star is dating, scandals, or dumb people doing rather idiotic things. Much of society have been consumed in their personal instant gratification and what makes them “happy”. When on an off chance that news does show things that are serious and impactful(not necessarily positive things that is happening in the world) people have become so numb that the best they could do is feel sympathetic and at worst continue on with their day. The other part of the problem is that those behind what is being published and shown on the news media have been absorbed in their avarice nature, whatever allows them to make as much profit they do. “Writing thousands of hours of coverage from what could have been summarized in a couple of minutes every few weeks, a new rhetorical strategy was developed, or-let’s be generous-evolved”(6), Saunders describes the new formula formed by mass news firms that would yield the most profit.
Film is specifically made to be sold. Film is an art that is also a source of income. No matter the format, be it big budget or independent, film is a commercial product. According to Comolli and Narboni in their essay “Cinema/Ideology/Criticism”, film is “transformed into a commodity”. Film is “a product, manufactured within a given system”, is it the product of the ideologies that dominates where it was constructed.
Movies and dramas are some of the artistic innovations of the human beings. They remind us of the traditional beliefs, customs and the way of life. TV dramas, for instance, are one way of teaching people about their past using an entertaining approach where characters take different roles symbolically to pass a message to the audience. Movies however, make scenes vivid and emotional as they bring a clear picture of what happened using moving images. That said, movies make it easy for one to remember, especially on parts that they find interesting or scarring.
For hundreds of years, stories have been passed on from one person to another through the oral tradition and the visual arts. In our society today, film is the dominant form of storytelling. Films shape and inform our opinions of the world. Many people’s only source of information is from films. This can be harmful when the information is false or misguided.
Today, movies use the same logic. If the people in the films are attractive then the movies will bring more people in. Throughout time, the movie industry has took something little and created the most dominant form of entertainment for Americans
One hundred years ago nobody heard about the news or current events from Facebook or the newest tweet. Until fairly recently the most up to date news had to be heard through the grapevine or read in a newspaper. Since the creation of the internet and the mass media that comes with it, information can now be spread all the way across the world in the time it takes to hit the enter button on a computer or phone and upload it to the internet. Some people think that this is a bad thing because so many things that are uploaded can be either false information or simply information that is misleading and could teach individuals the wrong thing. However, if mass media is used in the right way it can be beneficial to the accessibility of valuable information,
Over the past century, film has served as a powerful means of communication to a global audience and has become a vital part of the contemporary culture in a world that is increasingly saturated by visual content. Due to the immediacy and the all-encompassing nature of film, the process of watching a film, is widely perceived to be a passive activity by the general masses. However, quoting Smith in his article about the study of film, “nothing could be further from the truth.” The study and understanding of film as an art form enhances the way we watch and appreciate films. It requires the audience's active participation and interaction with the film in order to fully comprehend the directors' intention behind every creative decision.
The media will pick and choose which topics to discuss according to the viewer’s ratings. The news media represent the news in a manner that will leave people coming back for more. They choose carefully what they want to report and by doing so they do not spread lies within the articles but what they choose not to tell the audience. The media shares what the people
Furthermore, by making characters relatable, them pushing the boundaries of society is seen as more acceptable, and therefore people are more likely to follow suit. Ergo, it is even more important that filmmakers consider the stories they decide to showcase to see if the change would be a beneficial
For example one of the main reasons behind victory of PM Narendra Modi in 2014 election was this tabloid journalism. Most of the newspapers portrayed him as the hero in politics and successfully diverted the attention of the people only towards him rather than diffusing the attention towards other serious
Movies are often said to be an experience to broaden knowledge. When one watches a movie, they are usually focused on the characters and special effects instead of the plot due
Being a visual medium of presentation, a film creates an instant, direct and more convincing impression on its audience fulfilling its dual purpose of entertaining as well as sensitizing the audience. A lot of movies based on social issues are now being made to create awareness among people about the issues besides entertaining the audience, which is perhaps the foremost purpose behind the making
