Biography of Nelson Mandela

Mandela was a political activist and the first black President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. One of the most important actions taken in Mandela's name was the 1980 " Free Mandela !" Campaign launched by students at Witwaterstrand University.

Nelson Mandela was born in Mvezo, a small, isolated Thembu village on the Mbashe River near Umtata, the Transkei capitol. Nelson's name at birth was " Rolihlahla " which means ' troublemaker.' Mandela

Within the first months of his involvement with e the African National Congress, he married to his first wife nurse Evelyn Mase in 1944 and later started a family. Their first child Thembi was born in 1945. His first son died in a car crash. He also lost another son to Aids. Nelson has six children and seventeen grandchildren. Mandela and his first wife divorced after 13 years because of his adultery and the fact that she was a member of the Jehovah witnesses. Mandela had four children with Evelyn Mase before their divorce in 1957. Nelson Mandela later met a young social worker named Nomzamo Winifred, known as Winnie. Shortly after his divorce was finalized , the couple married on June 14,1958. He married his third and final wife Graca Machel in 1998 , when he was 80 years…show more content…
