Umar Ibn Al Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was one of the strongest believers of Islam. He was born into an average family and as a young man he tended to his father’s camels; Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) learnt martial arts, horse riding and wrestling. He was also described as being tall and physically strong – due to this many people feared him. When Islam first emerged, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) strongly opposed to it; in fact, he threatened to kill the Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The story of his conversation is well known to all Muslims. On his way to killing the Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), his friend, who had secretly become a Muslim, diverted him (may Allah be pleased with him) from his goal by telling him that his sister and brother-in-law have accepted Islam. Furious, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went to his sister’s house and found them reading a part of the Quran. Enraged even more, he tried to attack his brother-in-law; in the process, his sister tried to protect her husband and was thus injured. Feeling guilty, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked to see what they were reading. Upon reading the excerpt from the Quran, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was mesmerized by its beauty. He immediately went to see Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and accept Islam. Umar ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him)
