Acid rain is any form of precipitation that is usually acidic. “Acid rain” is a popular term referring to the decomposition of wet and dry acidic components. A more accurate term is “Acid decomposition.” Wet deposition is any form of precipitation that removes acids from the atmosphere and deposits them on the Earth’s surface. Dry deposition polluting particles and gases stick to the ground via dust and smoke in the absence of precipitation. Distilled water, once carbon dioxide is removed, has a neutral pH of 7. Liquids with a pH less than 7 are acidic and those with a pH greater than are alkaline. “Clean” or unpolluted rain has a slightly acidic pH of over 5.7 because carbon dioxide and water in the air react together to form carbonic acid, …show more content…
A lake polluted by acid will support only the hardiest species. Fish die off, and that removes the main source of food for birds, and also contaminating the lake water. Acid rain hits mostly the lakes in spring time, when fish lay their eggs. Humans can become seriously ill or even die from the effects of acid rain. One of the major problems that acid rain can cause in a human being is respiratory problems. Many can find it difficult to breathe, especially asthma patients. Asthma, along with dry cough, headaches and throat irritations can be caused by the sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide from acid rain. Acid rain can be absorbed by both plants and animals. When humans eat these plants or animals, the toxins inside of their meals can affect them. Brain damage, kidney problems and Alzheimer’s disease has been linked to people eating “toxic” plants or animals. • Reduce air pollution by increasing energy efficiency. • Reduce coal use and increase the use of natural gas and renewable resources. • If the need to burn coal is still necessary, then use a low-sulphur coal to reduce the amount of sulphur. • Removing of sulphur dioxide particulates, as well as nitrogen oxide, from the smokestack gases from industrial
The last test was called the Acidity test. The Acidity test gives us the alkalinity and acid of a stream. On the Ph scale it goes from 0 to 14. A stream with a great abundance of life will probably have a reading of 7 on the scale( which is near neutral). Here are the results from some of the tests.
Because sulfuric acid is an example of a pollutant that contaminates rainfall naturally, adding small amounts to distilled water will model acid rain. Synthetic acid rain is used to simulate the effects of acid rain on smaller and controlled scales, such as this experiment. Synthetic acid rain is overall a good tool to use a representation. A possible solution to stop acid rain from seeping into the soil and dissolving nutrients is to add a buffer to soil to counteract the effects of acid rain. Alka-Seltzer is a buffer because in order to maintain a balanced pH level, which is 7, you must have equal amounts a base an acid.
The air quality improves by using natural gas to generate electricity instead of coal. The use of natural gas reduces carbon dioxide emissions causing a decrease in air pollution. Some argue that since fracking allows us to obtain more oil, our dependency on foreign oil will decrease. Since our dependency should decrease other foreign countries will lower their tax rates. They will lower taxes because they know we are not dependent of them and their oil.
In other words, new buildings must reduce usage of resources through the establishments of resourceful, energy efficient products and materials, essentially less pollution. The abundance of programs and initiatives provided by the government and other organisations infer much pollution, environmental issues and concerns are prevalent in Pyrmont. Due to the increase in companies and industries settling into the precinct, the burning of fossil fuels increases, thus a rise in carbon dioxide levels which will, in turn,
While doing this, it would limit all the releases of air pollutants. The popular environmental movement began in the 1960s and still to this day The Clean Air Act is still effective because it still continues to cut out pollutions. This means that the air is still becoming clean, so the health of families and workers will be at a higher advantage. Illnesses and premature deaths will be able to decrease and humans can experience a longer life.
We nowadays are in demand of many different resources. To have these resources, people use some modern technologies which is efficient but may be costly. Moreover, these processes may release some impacts on our environment. In this assignment, I will write about fracking with it 's influences on air quality.
A stream with a great abundance of life would probably have a measurement of or near seven, which is near neutral, or the measurement may be a little higher. For a stream that is not as productive, the pH measurement may be higher or lower than seven. For the alkalinity test, the average was thirteen. An alkalinity test tells you if there are limestone, which neutralizes acid. The average amount of rocks that did neutralize acid was sixty five, while the average amount of rocks that didn’t neutralize acid was twenty nine.
If the fish are not healthy, that can adversely affect people. People could eat contaminated fish, or people cannot sell the fish because they are contaminated. Some fish may die from the pollution, leading to less fish for catching. Lower populations of fish and other marine life can also cause an imbalance in the food chain. Predators can also be harmed
The acidity doesn 't just effect the fish but it effects human beings. Just as the acidity hurt Mark and Sues business, it could hurt other business that are also involved with the oceanic wild
Intro: Water pollution has caused so many problems to our waterways that no one really knows how to help. Water pollution caused; dead zones, oil spills, garbage floating around, and unsafe drinking water. People disagree about water pollution because, people have found ways to improve and help out the problem that water pollution has caused around the world. Others believe that that water pollution has created situations and are in the process of figuring out solutions. Marine life habitats are getting destroyed, marine life is declining everyday, how and where the garbage is getting into the oceans, and the drinking water is becoming seriously unsafe to drink.
Companies should think about less polluting products and production processes for
The topic of this research paper will cover over Ocean Acidification and the effects on marine ecosystems. Ocean acidification is the decrease in pH levels of the Earth 's oceans, due to overbearing carbon dioxide being brought by the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide is drawn by seawater, where the chemical reactions take place, which minimize the pH levels in the ocean, the carbonate levels and the important calcium carbonate which these sea creatures need. When carbon dioxide disperses in this ocean, it causes the levels of acidity to rise towards the the surface, where most shell growth in marine animals have been stopped and has created the cause of reproductive disorders in multiple fish. Part of the problem with ocean acidification is human activity.
Lastly, I would give ways on what you can do to have cleaner air. II. Body a. To begin with, pollution can be
Some people call it acid deposition because they say it is a more precise name due to the fact that acid rain isn’t only rain, it can fall as rain, snow, sleet, hail and anything else. Acid rain has been formed because as we release harmful gases into the atmosphere, we are lowering the pH of precipitation, creating acid rain. Acid rain can kill small organisms such as trees and fish which destroys ecosystems. Although acid rain is not known to affect humans immensely, it can however, cause health issues usually lung
One of the greatest issues that we face towards the environment has been an increasingly difficult problem over the last few years. Earths climate is changing at rapid paces and solutions are needed as quickly as possible to replenish natural ecosystems and cultures that depend on the environment. Climate change not only affects the animals in our ecosystem, but us humans as well. With the human population increasing every year, climate change is only getting worse. Many argue that the effects of climate change towards the environment are due to other extraneous factors, however, I myself am a strong believer that the problems such as rising sea levels, warmer temperatures and natural disasters are all due to both natural causes and human activity.
