Introduction - What is gastroenteritis?
According to the Illustrated Medical Dictionary (2013: 246) Gastroenteritis is a condition of the stomach and intestines being inflamed, resulting in cases of diarrhoea.1 It is one of the main causes of death among infants and young children - second only to respiratory infections. Though gastroenteritis is common throughout South Africa, its urgency must not be overlooked, on the contrary; our efforts to control gastroenteritis must be all the more resolute considering its prevalence. But before we delve into possible solutions for gastroenteritis, we must first come to grips with what it is, how it affects the body, how it is treated and finally how it can be prevented.

Rotaviruses are characteristically identified as particles encapsulated in a double-shell, and measuring approximately 70 nm in diameter. Different strains of parvovirus have also been found to cause diarrhoea in epidemics in many different parts of the world.2
Pathology
After finding its way into the body, the rotavirus typically infects the intestine's epithelial cells, resulting in atrophy and death of the intestinal villi. Although both the rotaviruses as well as the parvovirus can cause gastroenteritis, they differ in the sense that the parvovirus is not found in the epithelial cells of patients.2
Symptoms
Patients with viral gastroenteritis typically develop symptoms between 24 - 48 hours after the initial infection. Gastroenteritis involves the inflammation of the small intestine, its symptoms are somewhat similar to appendicitis the two may at times be confused with one another.3 However, pain caused by gastroenteritis is more generalized. According to the web article Viral Gastroenteritis (Pietrangelo A.), symptoms may then include the following:
Watery diarhoea
Vomiting and nausea
Chills & high fever
Headaches, muscle- and joint
jejuni is known for giving people "food poisoning". The symptoms of sickness come from a poison that C. jejuni gives off. This bacteria is usually found in amimals like chickens which people eat a lot. That's why when people eat undercooked meat like that, they can develop "food poisoning" from ingesting the C. jejuni bacteria. The first treatment the doctors decided to try was antibiotics.
SYMPTOMS Symptoms of this condition include: • Diarrhea. This may be watery, bloody, or yellow or green in color. • Fever. • Fatigue. • Loss of appetite.
Crohn 's is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease that belongs to a larger group of illnesses called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It is associated with inflammation of the digestive tract, or gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which runs from the mouth to the anus, and includes the stomach and intestines. It more commonly affects the end of the small intestine and the large intestine. Crohn 's disease symptoms and complications are unpredictable , you may experience almost no symptoms, then have a sudden flare-up. Or you could experience symptoms every day Crohn 's disease is difficult to diagnose, because symptoms vary and because it can be similar to other conditions.
Crohn and his two co-workers, Oppenheimer and Ginzburg, presented a paper on “Terminal Ileitis”, and it was described in the features of Crohn’s disease to the JAMA. It was published later that year as a landmark article in the Journal of the American Medical Association aka “JAMA” and with the title “Regional Ileitis: A Pathologic and Chronic Entity.” The JAMA article was published at a time
I think it would be a good idea to explain what crohns just in case you don’t know. Crohns is a disease that involves poop, yes poop. When I first got diagnosed I was having a problem with talking about this because it was pooped based. So, my doctor made me say poop one hundred
It eventually eats away at my intestine until it deteriorates. Sadly, when I first noticed I had Crohn's, it was too late for a portion of my intestine. When I entered the hospital I thought i just had severe stomach cramps, when I left I had about a foot less intestine. From that moment on, my future was all I could think of. I was honestly terrified for what was to come as an adult.
Just like most diseases, Crohn’s can be acquired by consuming bacteria from the disease or catching a virus that may lead to
Executive Summary In 2014, the US experienced the highest number of measles cases reported since its elimination in 2000. According to the CDC 's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, there were 668 reported cases of measles in the US in 27 states at the end of 2014, and 178 reported cases by June 26, 2015. A spread map showed that most of the cases reported are located in California due to the high number of anti-vaccine parents located there. Google has its headquarters located in California and hired some anti-vaxxers, people known as they are against vaccines.
Listeriosis is an airborne disease which can be treated if it is diagnosed early. This infection is deadly for the elderly, the immune compromised and for pregnant women as it can cause the loss of their child or it can cause their child to suffer different disabilities. The listeria bacterium can be killed by cooking or pasteurization but not by refrigerating it. The incubation period of listeriosis is 3 to 70 days and the illness can last from days to weeks. Causes: It can be caused by the consumption of vegetables which have been contaminated by soil or from manure which has been used as a fertilizer.
As such, it is important to ask the patients what alternative methods they are utilizing in order to properly advise them against harmful practices, though, as Juckett (2013) states, many folk and herbal treatments are harmless and can be safely accommodated. Other beliefs include that abdominal pain may be attributed to food stuck in the intestine and that a child’s failure to thrive may be caused by a hex given to the child due to an envious glance. Again, though most therapies and responses to illness and disease are not harmless, lead salts and mercury compounds may be given for food stuck in the intestine and teething. These therapies are not advised to be used (Juckett, 2013). As with illness and disease, Hispanic culture responds to death in its own
IBS a etiology is most likely multi-factorial involving biological, psychological and social factors. Visceral hypervigilanceand visceral hyperalgesia , which could be mediated by peripheral, spinal, and/or central pathways, constitute key concepts in current research on pathophysiological mechanisms of visceral hyperalgesia ,. IBS is the common diagnosis in clinical practice for gastroenterologists and primary care physicians. IBS has a multifactorial causes, including changed intestine reactivity and motility, changed pain perception, and change of the brain-gut axis. In addition, psychological and social factors can influence digestive function, illness behavior, Irritable bowel syndrome is the among of the most common gastrointestinal disorders with a prevalence ranging from 5%-20% in the general people world
South University Jane Emond NTR 2050 Dr. Weintraub August 3, 2015 The five senses, sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. All amazing on their own, but when all are working independently of each other properly people can function pretty well. However, when the slightest disruption interferes with how our senses work properly life can become pretty unbearable at times. Just to name a few issues such as the common cold, seasonal allergies, conjunctivitis, and ear infections can very easily cause the balanced system to go out of whack.
Pylori infection is on a steep decline in most of the western countries mainly due to the success of combination therapies and improve personal hygiene and community sanitation to prevent re-infection. The situation is not improving in many of the developing countries due to failure of treatment regimes and emergence of durg resistance. The infection in some cases leads to chronic superficial gastritis, chronic active gastritis, peptic ulcer disease and gastric adenocarcinoma. Humans are the only important reservoir of H.Pylori.[12] Children may acquire the organism from their parents (more often from the mother) or from other children.
The Digestive System The digestive system is a system consisting of the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, gallbladder, small intestine, large intestine, the rectum and the anus. The functions of the digestive system are: • To break down food particles into molecules for digestion • To absorb into the bloodstream the small molecules produced by digestion • To eliminate un digested and unabsorbed foodstuffs and other waste products from the body The full digestive process begins at the mouth. The food enters the mouth and is chewed.
On some occasions, diarrhea is accompanied by some abdominal discomfort or pain. Severe abdominal pain is not typical and, if present, may be a sign of more severe illness. If diarrhea is massive and results in dehydration, the condition becomes an emergency, and may potentially be lethal. Patients who experience dehydration are usually thirsty, and have dry throats. In older patients, the skin appears to be loose, and they may become very sleepy, confused or develop changes in behavior.
