He was born in Olean, New York but he and his family moved to Torrance, California when he was just two years old. He began to cause havoc in his neighborhood. His fearless and troublesome personality is displayed as he got in trouble with the law by stealing food and money, creating pranks, and getting in a number of fights.

The novel Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand tells the story of Louie Zamperini’s childhood, military service and imprisonment, along with the effects of the latter on his life after the war. In it, many characters of the story are examples of the overall theme of people finding themselves in their darkest moments. In fact, two of the most important characters of the book, Louie and Watanabe, are used to place this theme at the forefront of the story. When Louie was sent to the prison camp where Watanabe was, it began his slow descent into the worst part of his entire life.

The novel Unbroken is set in Torrance, California in the summer of 1929. Louis Zamperini is a twelve-year-old delinquent who is struggling to find his way as an Italian immigrant in a small town. The theme of redemption and forgiveness are shown throughout the book and in each area of Louie’s life. Every aspect of Louie’s life shows how he redeems himself and how the ultimate act of forgiveness is the most powerful resource for redemption.

Unfortunately, he and his friend Phil were captured by the Japanese and put into prison camps. Louie needed to show resilience and resist the captors attempts to make him feel worthless. Laura Hillenbrand, the author of Unbroken, uses character to show the theme when tough situations arise one must be resilient in order to transform the bad into good or even better. When Louie was a prisoner in the camp, he needed to resist the dehumanization and beatings he had been given by the Bird.

In the novel, Unbroken, author Laura Hillenbrand did an excellent job displaying main character, Louie Zamperini 's’ resilience throughout the story as he was a prisoner of war. In short, Louie had an amazing trait of being able to take a unfortunate situation and turn it around to success. Whether it was his troublemaking school years, stressful running career, or trauma from the war he always came out on top. Starting the novel, Louie is described as quite the rascal. He was constantly getting in fights and not doing well in school.

Louie Zamperini, never knowing which way is right or wrong, conquers everything thrown his way, and that forms him into an idol to his family and the world. Louie Zamperini, shaken, growing up he was an outsider, never really understanding what his calling was until, he became a runner. Having one of the fastest times in the world. His life was about to change. Laura Hillenbrand's best seller book, Unbroken, is a story based on soldier, father, and Olympic Runner, Louie Zamperini, he projects the characteristics of determination and resourcefulness in the story.

Someone once said, “Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future” (Lorenzo). Olympic athlete, Louie Zamperini lived through WWII and was able to experience a life free from his horrible past. Laura Hillenbrand’s novel Unbroken tells the story of Louie Zamperini and the struggles he experiences as a POW in WWII. After surviving the war, he returns home a completely different man.

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand follows Louie Zamperini, a US prisoner of war survivor in World War II. Louie Zamperini was the son of Italian immigrants. He grew up in Torrance, California with a habit of testing the limits. Pete, Louie’s older brother, saw that Louie had a talent for running. As a result, he forced Louie to join the track-and-field team at school.

The biography, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is about the life of Louis (Louie) Zamperini, a POW surviver during World War 2. The book has a multitude of heroes. Some demonstrate heroism throughout the book, while others evolve into heroes towards the end. Then there is this hero who puts his life in danger to save people he doesn't even know—Louis, our protagonist. He sacrifices himself to save others continuously.

Refferd to as the Bird, Mutsuhiro Watanbe hunted Louie, beating him constantly everyday for no reason. In this example, Louie’s morale was boosted by Phil’s confidence in him: “I’m glad it was you, Zamp” (132). Phil portrayed that out of all the crewman on the plane, Zamperini became the man that Phil wanted as a partner on the raft which they now depend on for survival. At this point in the story, Hillenbrand revealed Louie’s resilience when confronted with Mac’s untrustworthy act: “The realization that Mac had eaten all of the chocolate rolled hard over Louie... The crash had undone him. Louie knew that they couldn’t survive for long without food, but he quelled the thought” (138).

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is a biography of Louis Zamperini, a famous Olympic runner and a World War 2 POW veteran. Running impacted Louis’ life in many ways. As a young boy, Louis was always a troublemaker. He started running and his behavior improved drastically. During the war, Louis reminisced of the memories of his running days.

Another important fact was that as Louie was traveling across the Pacific Ocean, his plane was shot down, and his pilot and he became stranded in the middle of the ocean for forty-seven days. Both the pilot and Louie survived, but they were captured and place into prison-of-war camps. Another important fact was that during Louie’s time in the prison-of-war camp, there had been a guard nicknamed the Bird, that punched Louie more than two hundred times and even made him clean pigpens with his bare hands just because he did not like

The suffering he went through ultimately led him to his newfound faith. During Louie 's time on the life raft and in the POW camps he suffered an unbelievable amount of pain and desperation, but out of that suffering came faith. Character Analysis of Louis Zamperini In the novel, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand,the author uses Louie’s life experiences to show his two most important traits: being rebellious and very determined. First He is most of the time filled with determination, but often can be rebellious. As we read through this novel we learn that Louis suffers through PTSD from dire situations that had happened in the internment camp and surviving 47 days on a raft during WWII.
