Falling in love can make everything around you unimportant. When true love appears it is hard to think clearly and rationally. A lot of people fall in love before they even know each other, because of the culture we live in. When two people are married they become one flesh, and sex is the culmination of the relationship. When two people then break up or have an affair after having sex, it is like ripping apart the flesh. Should you be allowed to follow what your heart truly wants even though you are in a relationship? In this short story by Judy Troy, we get introduced to this predicament. In the text we find a lot of symbolism, as for example the weather which plays a major part of the short story. At the beginning of the short story when Lilly and Carl first met in the softball game there was sunlight “In the August wind, with the afternoon sun slanting over the dusty softball field (L9-10)” but as the story goes on the weather starts changing to a harsher and more severe condition, which in my eyes has a symbolic meaning for it will end miserably. Also if we look at the months the story took place. They first met in August and the story ends in February, which is the last days of winter and winter gives us the symbol of death or renewal. Lilly opened Carl´s eyes to a new and a better world. In Carl´s entire life he had lived by what his father told him and that was to “Never take chances, always be prepared for what´s next (L54-55)” however after he had been with Lilly then his ideology changed, nothing is coincidental you should enjoy the moment, not think too much about it, Carl´s new ideology was your hearts feelings comes first and
