Charles whipped Buck as he struggled being the lead dog. Charles was headed to Dawson with six of his dogs, his wife, and his brother-in-law. They stopped as they saw a man. All the dogs fell to their back in tiredness and starvation. the man introduced himself to them as John Thornton. Mercedes, Charles’ wife, was the first to speak and she said “I’m Mercedes.” Hal, Mercedes’ brother, asked the man if he thought they could make it to Dawson. He said “Your dogs are too tired and your sled weighs too much.” Charles started whipping the dogs one by one to get them to stand up. He didn’t care what anyone said, Charles was determined to make it a cross the river. Buck wouldn’t get up no matter how many times he got beaten. John suddenly jumps
