Florence Kelley was an activist who fought against child labor in the late 1800'-early 1900's. She fought very hard for child labor and for better working conditions for our women. On the day of July 22, 1905 Kelley gave her speech regarding her reasoning of why child labor should end. Kids back then were in awful conditions because their children had no freedom, got deformities due to not ever seeing the sunlight, were underpaid, working up to 16 hours a day, underfed, and often had very poor sleeping and housing conditions. Child Labor Analysis Child Labor was one of Florence Kelley’s main topics at a speech she gave in Philadelphia during a convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Kelley talks about all the horrors children were going through and the injustices they were suffering. She talks of the conditions children working in, the hours they were going in, and all in all, how wrong child labor was. Her purpose for this was to gain support of people to petition for the end of child labor. Kelley’s appeals to Ethos, Pathos and Logos through the use of great rhetoric is what allows her to achieve her purpose.
In Florence Kelley’s speech, through her use of parallel structure and detailed description to describe the conditions of child labor, anecdotes that relay its prominence, appeals to emotion and motherhood, she conveys an effective message that child labor is unjust. Kelley illustrates a sweaty, brutal environment in which children are responsible for the production of many items that people use daily. According to Kelley, “Under the sweating system, tiny children make artificial flowers and neckwear for us to buy.” Words like “tiny children” and “sweating system” describe an environment that no one will feel comfortable in.
Describing the working conditions and how long these children were working in the factories, the audience begins to realize how difficult these jobs can be on the children. Working at the factory provides Lyddie with a great deal of money, more than she has ever got before. If Lyddie had not gone to the factory she would have no money left. Before Lyddie worked at the factory she had a different job. She was a house maid and got paid little to no income at all, then when she went to the factory all of that changed. “ The pay reflected her proficiency, she was making almost $2.50 a week…” ( page 86 ).
One of the consequences of child labor was the accidents they experienced such as the one the boys“ three fingers were permanently disabled ”(Sinclair 70). The unprotected children working condition left and any sort of accident possible to happen, but the necessity of the money had pursued them to accept these circumstances. The boys were not the only victims, the girls became victims too. “ Little Kortina like the most children of the poor, prematurely made old ”(Sinclair 77). The circumstances of life had altered the young girl, she like any other little girl had to take care of her brother and sisters because no one else was available to do this task.
She expresses that, “North and South Carolina and Georgia place no restriction upon the work of children at night; and while we sleep little white girls will be working tonight in the mills in those states, working eleven hours at night,” (Line 27-31.) She uses the phrase ‘while we sleep’ to generate feelings of remorse among the listeners as the children work tirelessly on end while the adults are resting. She also uses the phrase ‘little white girls’ to create more sympathy as girls were seen as frail and innocent, and it creates the question ‘Why is an innocent and weak person being forced to work laboriously?’. She also states, “Tonight while we sleep, several thousand little girls will be working in textile mills, all the night through, in the deafening noise of the spindles and the looms spinning and weaving cotton and wool, silks and ribbons for us to buy,” (Line 18-22.) She uses auditory imagery in the pathos argument above for her audience to better understand the harsh conditions that the children work in.
The Gilded Age lasted from 1870 to World War 1, “1900s.” The Gilded Age was a period of fast economic development, but also much social struggle. Mark Twain in the late nineteenth century founded the “Gilded” Age, which means covered with gold on the outside, but not really golden on the inside, for example, tin. This period of time was glittering on the surface but corrupt underneath. In other words, the outside looked beautiful, but the inside looked old and trashy. During this era, it was a period of greed and cunning. Also, it was a period of fast economic development, but also much social struggle.
The news of Tempie’s death shook Ella greatly. Shortly following her mother’s death, Ella was taken in by Tempie’s sister Virginia. After moving, Ella had a hard time adjusting to her new surroundings and became unhappy eventually starting to skip school frequently thus causing her grades to drop. It was at this time that she got into trouble with the police and was sent to a reform school. However, things got even worse for Ella while she was in the reform school as she often suffered beatings from those in charge.

A Rally in Chicago on May 4, 1886 in Haymarket Square ended in tragedy when a bomb went off killing police officers and some participants. Public sympathy turned against Labor leading to the arrest and conviction of the rally organizers.
Imagine working sixteen hours a day in an unsanitary, dangerous, place for a big business gaining two dollars.This is what laboring-class Americans had to go through during the Gilded age. Politically, the first largest American labor union was formed during the Gilded age and many other organizations formed as well as violent strikes.Socially, different ethnics joined together to share their thoughts and realize the evils of big business and of the federal government. Mentally, most we 're losing their personal life while some were financially stable and glad. During the Gilded Age laboring-class Americans attempted to better their lives in the power of big businesses and the federal government. Many different attempts were taken by the laboring-class Americans but they were more successful uniting to become one. To obtain an eight hour work day, paid sick days, health care, sanitary conditions, and higher pay.
