Humans use dogs in many ways and the interaction has revolved from the use of dogs as hunting tools or guardian of homes to keeping them as pets. In history, dogs were initially bred for hunting purposes, as an instrument and a mean of survival for hunters. Taking terriers as an example, it was once bred to control small animals like rats, rabbits, foxes and hunt badgers by creeping into the ground to drive them out. However, with technology advancement and better living standards, majority of humans do not require to rely on dogs for hunting, the primary purpose for breeding terriers is to serve as pets. We treat dogs as pets, and developing a new form of relationship with our pets, which in turn leads to dogs losing their connection to their practical use for hunting. The problem of breeding a dog is that we are unlikely be able to avoid causing damages to its health and liveliness, which may result in deterioration of its functional vigor and intelligence. With this, my argument will be focusing on dogs should not be treated as a property and that we prohibit the ownership of dogs.

In the case of stray dogs in Bali (Indonesia), many were infected with rabies and 150,000 of them were killed by the government as a form of precaution and elimination purposes. The reason that they became stray dogs were due to the abandonment of their owners which led to health and hygiene issues since they were no longer taken care of. So it might seem to be the dogs are actually living in a better condition under humans’ care, rather than living out in a condition with unlimited freedom in the streets or the wild.
