(4 points) Provide 2 reasons why you think professional athletes should take political stands. Include some examples from the articles or elsewhere of when athletes took a political stand. Feel free to conduct your own secondary research (and properly cite it!) to help inform your view. I think professional athletes should take political stands because of the opportunity they have. By being a ;professional athlete you are in the spotlight so you have the opportunity to make a political stand. I also think pro athletes should make political stands because they can influence a lot of people and bring light to things that are not shined upon. For example athletes have the ability to bring up certain events or behaviors that are not being shown on local media. The St. Louis Rams …show more content…
Ultimately, do you think they did the right thing? When Tommie Smith and John Carlos bowed their heads and raised their fists they made one of the most powerful gestures seen on tv. As a result of their actions, they were suspended from the U.S team and eventually lived average middle class lives as teachers and coaches. They were also considered heroes to millions of people because of their courageous actions. So, as a result their careers were harmed but ultimately I think they did the right thing. By taking a stand on one of sport's biggest stages they stood up for what they believed was wrong. (4 points) Do you believe the NFL St. Louis Rams "Hands Up" protest during a football game helped or hurt the Ferguson protest movement? Why or why not? I think the St. Louis Rams “Hands Up” protest helped the Ferguson movement because it provided support for the protesters. I do think it may have been taken and portrayed the wrong way. In quotes from the players they all talked about how their actions were in support of peaceful protests to help raise awareness in
Several National Football League players have been trying to send a message to the public with their actions during the national anthem. Some fans are obsessing about whether players should take a knee, raise a fist or lock arms during the national anthem before games. However, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman said they should be talking about the reasons why players are protesting. It is because the recent news stories of police officers killing unarmed African- American people. Sherman says Americans should focus on the message being sent with this protesting.
Kneeling during the national anthem is completely irrelevant to the problem trying to be addressed. It only has caused disruption and arguments. People supporting the cause believe they are being treated unfairly in some way, but if you ask anyone, any group, or minority, they’re going to tell you how they’re being treated
The National Anthem is something many Americans hold dear to their hearts. When football players started to kneel instead of stand with the others as a protest, Americans started to become angry. Football players should stand for the national anthem for the soldiers, to help unify America, and to find another way to protest. First of all, football players should stand for our soldiers. Our soldiers have fought for our country and they fight for our flag.
This would in turn allow the NFL to support Kaepernick in his decision to peacefully protests issues that do not reflect poorly on Kaepernick or the NFL as an organization that makes certain demographics of people very wealthy and successful in America. Colin Kaepernick is not effectively protesting to raise awareness on a racial issue because people are more focused on the way he is choosing to protest, rather than why he is protesting. This is an important issue because he is indirectly disrespecting our armed forces, causing major controversy, which is dividing our country. If Kaepernick can figure out a way to peacefully protest in a respectful manner it will set a precedent for many people who have celebrity status on how they should address issues they feel to be brought to light in our current society. Kaepernick continuing to kneel will ultimately result in a national race war with people arguing over issues that were never meant to be brought to light over Kaepernick 's kneeling.
The debate over whether or not kneeling during the National Anthem is a very interesting topic to me, due to the debates/opinions I have heard outside of the classroom. While I admit I stand with a little bias against Heather Mac Donald after googling that she was a conservative before reading her article on police shootings, I still have to say I believe Charles M. Blow had the better message. In our discussion in class, it was baffling to see that it took 10 minutes for someone to note the real reason why these NFL Players were kneeling, but instead everyone talked about how much it disrespected the flag, which in my personal opinion it isn’t disrespectful with the original intention. The stretching or not even being on the field for the
Steven Sternberg Mrs. Burns English 1 CP 1 March, 2018 The Flag Protest “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color” (Kaepernick, Colin). The flag protest has been a protest existing for a long time but, recently sparked lots of controversy. Although kneeling during the national anthem may seem disrespectful are often seen as a disrespect to the flag and troops, a inefficient way to promote a cause, and anger many people in shows division in the country, it can show that the ideals of freedom is justified, it generates conversation and awareness about topic, and is a legal form of peaceful protest.
Being at an NFL game was not the correct time or place to hold a silent protest, and there are people that fight to give Americans the freedoms and rights that they have, so why disrespect those who risk their lives for the USA. It may be one simple act of protest, but not only does it disrespect those fighting but their family and friends too. Like every situation in life, there are two sides to every story, both sides of this one have reasonable arguments. In conclusion, most people frown upon any type of act to disrespect those who give them their freedoms and rights, as well as those who’s duty is to keep communities
Should college athletes be paid? I think they should. I found three main reason why other people and myself think that college athletes deserve pay. One, you can just pay the sports that produce the most revenue. Two, these student athletes put in lots of work and even sometimes have to miss class to go to the sports event.
People know that doctors and firefighters save lives, while athletes play a game to make money. Even teachers pay isn’t anywhere near to athletes; they educate the generation’s youth so they can make a difference in the future. So many jobs that are very important don’t get paid as much and that money can go towards better causes. But these are only some of the reasons that pro athletes get paid too much.
They are the ones risking their bodies for entertainment of others. In addition pro athletes are often away from family and children while traveling to games and practices. They often don’t get to see
College athletes already get their education free why should they get paid for playing a sport they love playing. What do you think, should college athletes get paid for playing the sport there in? Well I don’t think so and in this paper I will tell you and give you reasons why they shouldn’t be paid. College athletes are already getting a free education they shouldn’t be allowed to be paid. My topic is why college athletes shouldn’t get paid.
The National Anthem goes on every single time before a game begins. Each time it is being sung everyone usually stands up to show respect for America. While, news said that a few athletic players that have been sitting down, while the National Anthem goes on. This keeps happening more and more slowly because those athletics don’t believe that America lives up to that potential in the song as it once represented. As well as the incidents that happened with the police of excessive force being used against people unassertively.
Too many professional athletes are acting like ignorant fools. Professional athletes are setting a terrible example for today’s youth. They have cocky attitudes and have no respect for others. They go out and participate in things they shouldn’t do. Now, not all professional athletes are bad role models, Mike Trout, Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter, John Wall, Cristiano Ronaldo, Peyton Manning, Russell Wilson, Roger Federer and many more have benefited people by being amazing role models.

The past has shown us that athletes can contribute in changing the world and the star power African-American athletes have in the sporting world today is the proof. Athletes in professional sports today embrace their role in society as role models and for the most part understand they have the stage to be more than just athletes, but historical figures just like those before
