Should Guns Be Allowed on College Campuses? Have you ever wondered how it would be like to know every student in your classroom carried a gun? Many worry on how this would change the college experience for everyone attending, working and visiting a campus. Guns on campus should not be permitted because it would encourage more violent crime, distraction from the learning environment, and increase in suicide. On the other hand, people for gun rights claim guns on campus are what students need to keep themselves safe.
have the right to protect yourself. Face to face with a madman and his gun, the last thing we want is to be left defenseless. This is why I am a student for concealed firearms on campus. I believe the most efficient defense against an out-of-control triggerman on campus is other armed students and professors who can shoot back and stop the carnage. School campuses are not places common people feel concerned enough to protect themselves with a gun.
David DeGrazia proposes a moderate control of guns meaning that only individuals with a need for self-protection be allowed to own a gun and only after a complete course in safety (Hsiao and Berstein). DeGrazia also believes that owning a gun increases the likelihood that a person will be killed in their own home whether accidentally or intentionally (Hsiao and Berstein). The Democratic Party believes that stricter background checks will deter guns from being purchased by the wrong people. That might be true, but will it stop a violent person from committing a
It clearly states “the people 's right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed”(Second Amendment) So with that being said no one can completely take our guns away without changing the constitution. In my opinion, it is my constitutional right as a citizen of the United States of America to own a firearm. I don 't know why we would want to take away all the guns from America, the majority of people that have them use them for recreational purposes only. So why do we want to punish those people for legally following the laws and doing what they are supposed to be doing and not hurting anyone? (Farago) After the recent shootings in our nation, there are people really starting to stand up and protest our guns.
This method would allow the shooter to be apprehended but would not kill them or any innocent person that it was accidentally hit with. The last but not least method that could be used is to have everyone carry around pepper spray. This could be used if an innocent person was in a close proximity to the person that had the gun. Again, it would stop the person but it would not be lethal if it was to be used on the wrong person. There are many other ways to protect students and faculty without the use of guns which are one of the most deadly weapons that could be
To make sure a gun is not getting into the hands of the wrong person, certain rules and standards for getting a gun need to be set in place. For college purposes, the safety of the campus and the people is crucial. As far as the students and staff on the college campus, it should not be a concern to worry about guns while trying to teach and learn. Without guns being present, this will protect the teachers and students and create a positive learning environment. For many reasons, guns should not be permitted on a college campus.
Firstly, the arming of students, faculty and staff should be prohibited because its unsafe. The debate on whether staff, faculty and students should carry firearms on campuses has been going for years now. Some colleges have debated that a law should be passed were staff and faculty should carry firearms on campus, but other colleges have dismissed this case because it is dangerous and unsafe. According to Jesus Villahermosa’s essay “Guns don’t belong in the Hands of Administrators, Professors, or Students” he states, “I agree that allowing guns on campuses will create problems, not solve them.” This statement is true because not everyone is capable to handle a gun or even use one. Also, according to the website The Campaign to Keep Guns off
Also, students are legally allowed to be armed and able to defend themselves and others in public and at home, so it makes sense that they should be able to defend themselves at college. The United States has millions of guns and most people who own guns and carry them are law-abiding citizens, like you and I. In addition to holstering a gun a person has to be licensed by the state of residence, so students will have training and knowledge of firearms and their power. In contrast, there are some people who strongly oppose campus carry; they believe that students having guns will increase campus violence and shootings, however, this is not the case. There is plenty of evidence, from creditable sources, that show that more guns there are, the less violence there is.
Concealed handguns should not be allowed on college campuses due to all the dangers that can be caused by a hand gun. Those who disagree believe that colleges should allow concealed handguns on campuses, due to the constitutional right to bear arms. Also, “people are safer when they have guns to protect themselves” (Skorton and Altschuler
First and foremost, banning guns will not stop criminals from obtaining and committing crimes with them. Furthermore, guns don’t kill people; people kill people. Lastly, guns prevent the government from becoming tyrannical and oppressive. At first, one may think that banning guns would be a superb solution to the growing problem of gun violence. However, doing this will not stop felons from procuring and committing gun-related crimes.
Guns themselves are not responsible for crime; it is the peoples who are guilty for it and using gun for killing peoples. Guns are the weapon which can be used for self-defense and protecting peoples but never hurting anyone. According to me government should restrict or normalize the use of guns by selling to people, because there are some good peoples who use gun for hunting, shooting practice and competition. As stated by Mytheos Holt, “Guns in the right hands help public safety. Guns in the wrong hands harm public safety”.
While a man from the NRA, Brian Calabrese, said self-defense is used in various ways, the thought of a panicked person with a gun during a crime is not beneficial. From my perspective, I don’t want to live in a society where the at any point in time, I should be ready to shoot a gun. The arms race which Kelly Sampson was talking about, also made me think about how different society would be if the arms race ensued. Most of society would have to adapt to the norm of owning a gun, which would force the criminals to get stronger and higher capacity firearms. In this hypothetical society, I believe there would be a much higher death and crime rate.
Would Stricter Gun Control Laws Benefit America? The highly debatable question has flooded the minds of Americans. It is continued to be argued throughout America. The Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States clearly states: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.” Obama’s effort to enforce this amendment may leave America in a frantic position. Stricter gun laws would not benefit America because they would restrict the rights of citizens, restrict the reliability and freedom citizens deserve, and would do nothing to prevent killings from occurring.
CJ Grisham, the writer of this article, states that open carry is a good thing in America. He states that if a criminal sees a target with a gun they aren’t as likely to attack them because “Criminals prefer soft targets.” Even though CJ makes a good point here, he is forgetting some key information. What about the criminal? Open carry gives everyone the right to carry their guns out in the open, even the criminal attacking other people. Also, how are civilians able to tell how that person is going to use that gun?
Gun control should not mean taking away the rights of law-abiding citizens and letting criminals destroy and torment our lives. We need to do something about gun-related crimes. In the event that a firearm is being carried citizens must follow the present day laws. Instead of creating new laws and trying to find a new solution to the same problems, strictly enforce the present gun laws. Tennessee should be taking part in the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act and allowing police to have more rights than citizens.
