A large part of the 20th century was marked by the struggle in most of the world to make basic education available to everyone, and free. It would appear that this struggle has been won in some places, but there are still battles to be won. Now, in past decades another question has risen, this time about higher education, i.e. university or college education, and whether it should be free. On the one hand, making higher education free would give everyone an equal opportunity for further study and development. On the other hand, a surplus in highly educated individuals would create a deficit in blue-collar work, therefore creating instability in the economic system of a country. In my opinion, higher education should not be completely free, tuition fees should be reasonable, and governments should be equipped with funds for scholarships for the underprivileged students and these …show more content…

Whereas in a lot of developed countries part-time work may be available, and the students may be able to earn some of the means necessary for their education, this is not the case everywhere. For example, in Macedonia, there is rarely work available for students that would pay enough to even begin to cover student expenses. Another benefit of free higher education would be the amount of specialized individuals who would help enhance the overall well-being of the country, in all areas. Advancements made in sciences and areas of social development are higher in countries with higher education levels. There has always been an awareness of the link between poverty and education and free education might aid the country’s economy to rise, and aid individuals coming from poverty-stricken backgrounds to change their future which otherwise might be less than
