Schools should have an after school program for teens with depression. It would be a place where they can talk about their problems without feeling embarrassed and ashamed. Most teens would be scared of saying they have depression because they fear no one would accept them and they would be considered a freak or someone who is seeking attention. However, schools do not like to talk about this topic when. If schools can talk about date rape and drugs then they should be able to talk about suicide and how to help someone who is going through depression. Drug and alcohol abuse is the second most used method for suicide behind gunshot (Top 10 Common ). Usually people would go to these substances to make themselves “happy” in this case it removes their pain permanently as in ending their life. A popular method in prison is hanging, however failure will cause brain damage and permanent scarring on the neck (Top 10 Common). Most of the times when one really wants to kill him or herself they actually survive and often times this could lead to serious consequences. Failing a suicide attempt could cause permanent injuries such as organ damage from poison, shattered bones from jumping off a building, blood loss and tissue damage from cutting oneself, burns and neurological damage from electrocution, and even in a gunshot can leave one with organ and brain damage (Top 10 Common). Adolescents do not realize that sometimes when they want to kill themselves it might not fail and the consequences are quite severe. If schools can teach teens about what happens when the still live from suicide then the suicidal rate would go down. Most teens down want to attempt suicide then live with damage organs or being paralyzed for the rest of their lives. The brain produces a certain level of neurotransmitters. In the case of depression it is usually the brain produces low levels of serotonin. Serotonin helps regulate sleep, appetite, and mood and inhibits pain. Low levels of a serotonin have been linked to a higher risk for suicide (What causes depression?). Many people would like to disprove this and claim that feelings come from the heart, as people have been saying for years. NAMI, National Alliance on Mental Illness, claimed, “Only half of all Americans experiencing an episode of major depression receive treatment” (SAVE). In America, mental illness is not treated well and we rely on medicine to help fix mental problem. If we can educate schools, parents, and even the kids themselves then the suicidal rate can drop tremendously. Schools do not focus on sensitive subjects but suicide must be mentioned no matter how sensitive it is. If parents do not agree then they too should be educated on the consequences of suicide. Many parents want to “baby” their child and hide them from the outside world when in reality they are hiding them from the dark truths of the world. At one point or another, unless they are living with their parents forever, a teen will grow up and witness suicide in their community, work, or even their friends.
