The Satanic Verses is a novel written by Salman Rushdie in 1988 that sparked a lot of controversy. The book portrays the prophet Muhammad as a disgusting, dirty, lying, perverted hypocrite and portrays Allah as a frightening monster with claws and horns. Rushdie gives Muhammad's wives the names of prostitutes in his novel and the very title itself is offensive towards Muslims. Muslims consider Mohammad to be a loving and courageous man. Therefore, not only were these statements in the novel insulting but untrue as well. Rushdie was slammed by muslims with death threats and he went into hiding to escape the controversy. Many have suggested banning the book since it is abhorrent and disrespectful towards Islam and the muslim religion.
