Instead of a three-month summer vacation, year-round schools typically have several breaks of three to four weeks spread throughout the year. So year-round schooling don’t add more days to 180 so you don’t learn more. While some may argue that you lose time to learn over the summer because over summer break, students lose, on average, one month of grade level. It is more true that if you go to year-round schooling you won’t learn more than traditional schooling. Some evidence to prove this reason is year-round schooling has as many
This simply proves the belief that the current school starting dates are outdated because they were formed hundreds of years ago from schools, who didn 't understand the science of teen health, that wanted to start school save a few pennies from having less buses. The school start times should reflect the contemporary era, and with many children’s schedules being more busy and packed, the time of sleep and wake just don’t correlate anymore. One of the problems of starting school this early
With hectic schedules, late nights, and the pressure to push themselves academically, it is important that students have summer break to regain their social, physical, and psychological health. Many schools have embraced the idea of year-long education with the thought of increasing test scores, but the benefits of year-longs school may not be in favor of the students. Forty-one percent of all public schools within the country
School systems should be requisite to retain year long schooling. I know this sounds crazy, but there are more benefits in having a year long school. One benefit is to get more evenly placed breaks in the year; every year, millions of students struggle with the anxiety of going back to school. “Anxiety disorders are one of the most prevalent childhood mental disorders (Ford, Goodman & Meltzer, 2003). There is often a great deal of stress on students because they have been away from school for the whole summer.
Most people have been talking about whether or not students should be attending school year-round. There are both pros and cons to having a year-round calendar. The main reason people are against change is because more breaks will hurt the students learning. Having more frequent days away from educational learning causes them to forget more. On the opposing side they say having year-round calendars will increase the academics of students.
The bell rings and school is out, and this time, not for just the weekend, but for the long awaited 2 and ½ months of summer vacation! This is something that just about every student has been longing for all year. They can finally experience those amazing trips and vacations planned throughout the summer. Well, that’s how it should be at least. More and more schools are starting to move towards to the Year round school calendar.
For high schools specifically, attendance is a serious issue. Students would be less reluctant to go to school if either a Friday or Monday was omitted from the school week. Because of this, students might have an improved attitude at school, which could lead to less violence. Going to school one less day per week would also conserve energy and save money for the school. For students whose parent or guardian drives them to and from school, driving to and from school one less time during the week would save them gas.
For example “Barber Jerry” in the article “Year Round schooling really works” states that “The most important advantage of the balanced calendar, where students are never out of school for more than one month at a time”, this grants less time for students to lose most memory over the breaks. While students are on their one of their breaks many people believe students may not be able to work or have contact with teachers. Although it may be a little difficult for students to arrange a time to meet with certain teachers it is very much possible. In fact, students are able to do attend what is called “intermission classes”(Wildavsky) this is alike to summer school which is found in the agrarian school calendar. This is focused for the students that are troubled, or students that are looking for
Nearly two years ago the Montgomery County leaders voted to start the school day later so that kids could get the sleep that they needed to function during the school day. The debate that they thought was settled a couple years ago started to show a come back in Maryland's largest school system. They want to change the time that school starts back to the original time. This is a bad idea because their body’s are already on a sleeping schedule for a later time. It would be more difficult for them to get up earlier and attend school on
For many children, one of the biggest struggles that occur when going to school, is getting up early and making it to school on time. Many kids wish for “just five more minutes” to sleep in before having to get ready for school. Because of this, one main topic in education today, is whether the start time of schools should be later. While starting school an hour later might have its downfalls, the strengths, and advantages it would provide students with, outweighs the disadvantages. One struggle for students of all ages, is the fight to wake up, and stay awake through the whole day.
The only reason people wouldn’t agree would be because they want to spend time with their children, but they will still be able to because year round schooling gives short bursts of breaks about two weeks every other month(Towler). Finally, Year-Round Schooling would be a great idea to interpret and merge into our school . so that we can not just learn more but not be stressed out and forget what we learned the previous year. What they don’t know is that the People around kids need them to go to school all the time not just for education but, also so they may go to work and feed their families. This method of teaching is something that I have experienced when I was a child and I enjoyed learning while taking one week break about every
Summer breaks are full of good memories and should be experienced by all. I know that if I was in school during the summer, I would be distracted and not pay attention. Year round schools aren’t always beneficial to students, teachers, and the school itself. Let 's get rid of year round schools and let students be able to enjoy long summer
As a child I enjoyed the 3 months off during the summer, but did become bored as the summer dragged on. I also remember how the school year was rather crammed together. Outside of the weekend the only real time off we had was 2 weeks for Christmas break and one week for spring break outside of a day here and there for various holidays. My children for the past couple of years have been on a "blended" schedule. They have a 2 month summer with an extra week for spring break and a full 2 weeks for fall break while still going the 180 required days.
This helps us retain what we learned from school instead of losing it over 3 months of summer break. The 3 months of summer break requires your brain to focus on activities like basketball, video games, or swimming. 3 months of focusing can alter your brain and make you lose some of that information you learned over the school year. Not using that information we learned from school will make us forget some of it, if not used for a while. "BRAIN DRAIN: Students Lose Education during Summer Break."
“Additionally, low-income students can expect to lose two months of grade level reading achievement, while their middle class peers will stay where they were or make modest gains. Over the years, this discrepancy grows wider, and the lengthy summer vacation becomes another way to enforce class differences” (Long Summer Break Leaves Kids Behind”). Many students from advantaged families do go to summer programs or summer camps to help them get ahead, but students from regular families don’t have the same opportunities during summer. That causes those students to stay inside and do not do anything to stimulate their brain, causing the achievement gap between advantaged and disadvantaged students to grow exponentially. Traditional calendars have 70 full school days without any break.
