Water Pathogens the Silent Killer. Or Every glass of dirty water is a potential killer.

According to WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation, at least 1.8 billion people worldwide are estimated to drink water that is faecally contaminated. In India, 21% of country’s diseases are are water related. Worldwide every 90 seconds a child dies from a water-related disease. More than 3.4 million people die due to waterborne diseases, making it the leading cause of death around the world. Most of the victims are young children and many who die of illnesses are caused by bacteria that thrive in contaminated water sources. In Kenya, 3100 children under the age of 5 years old die daily due to the diseases caused by ingestion of contaminated water. Water pathogens are a huge health problem in Kenya, as many are left unprotected against diarrheal diseases and parasitic worms. Based on Joint Monitoring Programme’s 2012 report, access to safe water supplies throughout Kenya is 59% and access to improved sanitation is 32%. Based on a E-Journal by Samantha Marshall “The Water Crisis in Kenya: Causes, Effects and Solutions” 39% of the wells are located less than 15 metres away from the pit latrines in the slums while 59% of the wells are located 15 metres to 30 metres away. It can also be due to dirty object being in contact with the fresh water. For instances, when one draws water from the well using a contaminated container, animals excreting around water sources or people washing their dirty clothes in the water sources.
