Silymarin was tested for prevention of 7, 12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) in a Balb mouse mammary gland organ culture assay. Silymarin was an effective inhibitor when a lesion incidence of 33 percent vs 80 percent in controls. It was ineffective as an anti-initiating agent12. 6-gastrointestinal . Preparations made from milk thistle have been approved by the German Commission E to treat mild gastrointestinal dysfunctions22,24. 7-Colon/Small Intestine. Kim and coworkers (1994) documented that silymarin and silybin are inhibitors of β-glucuronidases of intestinal bacteria, human feces, and rat microsomal fraction.
