Silymarin was tested for prevention of 7, 12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) in a Balb mouse mammary gland organ culture assay. Silymarin was an effective inhibitor when a lesion incidence of 33 percent vs 80 percent in controls. It was ineffective as an anti-initiating agent12. 6-gastrointestinal . Preparations made from milk thistle have been approved by the German Commission E to treat mild gastrointestinal dysfunctions22,24. 7-Colon/Small Intestine. Kim and coworkers (1994) documented that silymarin and silybin are inhibitors of β-glucuronidases of intestinal bacteria, human feces, and rat microsomal fraction. Silymarin significantly inhibited the number of 1,2- dimethylhydrazine (DMH)-induced colon tumors in male rats12. 8-Sken :- Results from various experiments suggest that silymarin could be a promising chemopreventive and safe phytochemical that could be tested against skin cancer in humans, as well as a potential ingredient for sunscreens for protection against UV radiation.22 The people who suffer form psoriasis, Milk Thistle also helps to balance certain cellular chemicals in the skin which determine the rate in which skin cells are reproduced. There is some evidence to suggest that abnormal liver function may play a role in the development of psoriasis. Therefore liver treatment means treatment of
Name: Avishak Deb Roy Partners: Leevell Penn, Varugh, Butler Bio 101 Lab Report #1 02.22.2018 Swimming speed of paramecium tetraurelia in different levels of treatment. Introduction Paramecia is a unicellular Protista which are naturally found in aquatic habitats. It is easily cultured in the laboratory. It is oblong shaped and covered with short hairy structure called cilia. Paramecia does not pose any health or ethical concerns and the population can be maintained if there is a food source such as Enterobacter (Biological Foundation 7).
Diammonium glycyrrhizinate is the active chemical found in liquorice root. It has been used in Asian countries in order to combat liver diseases that have been induced by chemical and drug toxicity3. In a recent study it was tested for combating VAP-induced hepatotoxicity. The experiment was performed in mice and shows promising results for the use of diammonium glycyrrhizinate with divalproex in order to counter the effects of VAP-induced hepatotoxicity. In the study, mice that were treated with diammonium glycyrrhizinate and divalproex had liver enzyme counts closer to the control group than the group receiving just divalproex.
My results were fairly reliable, and are very accurate. Beans grow best with fences, poles etc. to climb up. They also prefer full sun. Most of the beans did sprout, but the ones that did probably did not get full sun due to their position. Another factor to explain my results, is the water amount.
Introduction: Southern New Jersey is home to an area of vast forests which are federally protected by the American Government. This area is known as the Pinelands, and it consists of many different plants, trees, and animals. Here in the Pinelands, all of these different species intertwine with one another, essentially needing one another in order to thrive and survive. Over the years, scientists have begun studying these relationships, today we know this as Ecology.
Types of psoriasis Plaque psoriasis Plaque Psoriasis is the most common type of psoriasis, its name comes from the accumulation of patches on the skin. Often have clear red skin patches that can appear in any area of the skin, but the knee, elbow, scalp, trunk, and nail are the most common position. There is also a piece of white, white accumulation in the plaque above, called scales. Possible symptoms of plaque psoriasis include skin pain, itching, and cracking. There are many non-prescription drugs that are effective in treating plaque psoriasis.
The purpose of this lab was to test the effect of pollution on algae growth. Through a series of experiments that lasted a month, four of the six hypotheses were proven to be correct or partially correct. The first hypothesis stated that if 0.5 mL of salt was added to algae, then the algae would grow slower than the positive control. This was proven correct, as shown by the difference of the data from the positive control and the container with 0.5 mL of salt in it.
Quinn Nguyen Floating Leaf Disk Photosynthesis Lab Conclusion: Graph your results for all 3 trials on one graph. Label the graph, both axes, and provide a legend to distinguish each trial. What was the rate of photosynthesis for each variable? How many leaves floated per minute? Rate of photosynthesis (leaves/min) Spinach: (2-0)/25 = 0.08
Doriana Spurrell What different frequencies and types of light would prompt the Spinach leaves to go through the process of photosynthesis effectively? Purpose: The purpose of this experiment was to see which of the four lights that range across the light spectrum would properly and most efficiently help the spinach leaf perform photosynthesis. Background Information: Photosynthesis is the process in which plants use light energy to transform into chemical energy.
L-Deprenyl has been widely used as a B-type monoamine oxidase (MAO-B) inhibitor in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. The ability of L-Deprenyl to effectively reduce the extent of dopamine breakdown in the brain allows for the slower progression of symptoms. Remarkably, early studies on rats have revealed a significant life prolonging potential of the drug. The antioxidant-eliciting functions by L-Deprenyl have been implicated as a possible mechanism to its positive influence on longevity, supported by the Free Radical Theory of Aging. The current study will further test the multiple effects that L-Deprenyl has on antioxidant levels, cognition, growth, maturation and the overall aging process throughout the lifespan of Acheta domesticus,
For thousands of years, herbalists have looked to nature in order to solve various ailments. Although ancient people had difficulties finding the correct dose of herbal medicines for various ailments, their failures and successes aided future generations in discoveries that piggy-backed on the ideas of their predecessors. The use of willow has evolved since our ancestors first discovered it, and it is now used to derive medicines that are able to treat and prevent modern diseases (Mahdi et al.
Trimyristin has a melting point of 56℃ - 57℃ and characteristic infrared frequencies seen in Functional Group Frequencies-Table I: Infrared Spectra. Our extract of trimyristin had a melting point range of 50.3℃ - 51.6℃ and infrared spectra frequencies seen in Actual Peka Locations-Table I: Infrared Spectra. Despite attaining a 29.97% recovery of trimyristin in this experiment, we achieved the expected outcome of the experiment, and fairly accurate data. Even though our conduction of the isolation and purification of trimyristin from nutmeg was successful, it was not perfect. Upon initially testing the melting point of our extract of trimyristin, we misread the melting point to be 156℃-157℃.
Jaspreet Singh Professor Paratore Biology 1 November 1, 2014 Spectrophotometry Identifying Solutes and Determining Their Concentration Statement of the Exercise or of the Problem The purpose of the lab experiment was to attain the following objectives: • Learning to Operate the Spectrophotometer • Construct absorption spectra for cobalt chloride and chlorophyll. Hypothesis If greater and higher concentrations of cobalt chloride are added to each solution then greater amounts of light would be absorbed by each solution. Thus a liner relationship will result in which the absorbance of a substance would be proportional to its concentration, which will be depicted, in a linear graph.
Introduction: The purpose of this experiment is to synthesize the component of strawberry fragrance – methyl trans-cinnamate. This reaction is accomplished by a Fischer esterification of methanol and trans-cinnamic acid refluxed for 1 hour
Herbal products have been used for treatments since ancient times, before the exploration of synthetic industrial drugs. Since herbs are natural, most of the consumers believes herbal products are completely safe and the product use continuously increased and is reported 10-19% growth in United States. In U.S.A any botanical product affects the structure and functions of the body belongs to either a drug or dietary supplement and FDA regulates the dietary supplement. The author of this paper selected St. John’s wort ,as the herbal supplement for this assignment of patient educational flyer. Product Description: St. John’s wort (SJW) is a yellow flowering plant, grows in the wild used for health purpose for long time .The
