The famous baseball player, Dave Winfield, once said, “You know, heroes are ordinary people that have achieved extraordinary things in life.” In the books To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, and Of Mice And Men, by John Steinbeck, Atticus Finch and George Milton, are ordinary people who have done extraordinary things, and both of them have many things in common.
In To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch, is a single parent with two kids, Jem and Scout. In addition to facing the challenges of raising his children and being a great father, Atticus is also a talented criminal defense lawyer, who is willing to stand up for what he believes in. When Tom Robinson, an African-American man was accused of raping and attacking a white

It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” This quote that Atticus said was what he ended up doing. When Atticus defended Tom Robinson, he did not have a gun, and he was already at a disadvantage. No matter what he did there was almost no way he could have won the case, but he still tried anyways, which gives him courage. All heroes have courage. Atticus was brave because most of the villagers were very racist and didn't like Tom based on his race. But, Atticus still stood up for what was right. After Atticus argued on Tom Robinson’s behalf, the town jury even seriously considered Atticus Finch’s evidence and took many hours to decide whether Tom Robinson was guilty or not. Although Atticus Finch did not win the case and Tom Robinson was declared guilty, Atticus still greatly affected the town for the better because the villagers were less racist. By representing Tom Robinson, Atticus proved he can do extraordinary …show more content…
I knowed his Aunt Clara. She took him when he was a baby and raised him up. When his Aunt Clara died, Lennie just come along with me out workin'. Got kinda used to each other after a little while." George is a hero because he could leave Lennie at anytime and just stop looking after him, but George always knows what's best for Lennie and really cares about him. George Milton may seem like an ordinary person but the way he takes care of Lennie is extraordinary.
Atticus Finch and George Milton both have many things in common. One big thing is they both do what they think is right. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus thinks the right thing is to defend Tom Robinson, and in Of Mice And Men, George thinks the right thing to do is to look after Lennie and in the end, Kill him. Although it may seem like he would be a villain not a hero for that, he saved many people, because Lennie was a danger to the lives of many. A real hero would not care what other people think and just do the right thing, like George and
In a way, George was like a parent or a big brother to Lennie. He scolded Lennie and yelled at him, but, all in all, George was just looking out for him. Readers see how George is like a guardian to Lennie in the first chapter when George says, “Lennie!... For god’ sakes don’t drink so much... Lennie.
Being Brave To Kill A Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, is a tale of two children, Jem and Scout. This powerfully inspiring and educational story entails daily life of the children, as well as the struggles they faced while their father is defending a black man’s case during a racially segregated time period. As an author, Harper Lee developed multiple themes throughout this story. These themes include good, evil, justice, fear, family, forgiveness, and compassion.
George is mostly shown as a father figure to Lennie, he takes care of him. But George does not really act nicely to Lennie a lot, it is like he is a real father. George gets angry like a real father is, when his child did something wrong. But George took this power and used it the wrong way in the early life with Lennie. He used his power which he had over Lennie to make him do anything George said and did horribly things to Lennie.
One of the many reasons why I feel Lennie is the most sympathetic is his disability. Being that Lennie has this disability it's hard for him to live independently. Lennie can't learn or remember much on his own . He needs someone which happens to be George to look after him and keep him out of trouble. Lennie has sympathy for everyone but mainly George he hates when George gets upset with him.
Every day in our lives, heroes are all around us. They may not be what society tells us is a hero, like Superman or Batman. They do not wear fancy costumes or have super powers. But these heroes change the lives of the people around them, for the better. Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird is the charismatic, understanding father of Scout and Jem Finch as well as a hard working lawyer in Maycomb County, Alabama.
There is a lot of pity and sorrow in this story. One of the first main character’s of the book that I would show sympathy for is George . I chose him because I noticed through this whole book he has never once left Lennie , to find his way by himself. Lennie is a good friend and man because
According to the Webster’s dictionary, a hero is defined as a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities. Atticus Finch defines heroism as “when you know you’re licked before you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” Atticus was the only one that stood up for Tom Robinson, a black man accused of rape. He did it, because he knew it was the right thing to do, even though there was a large possibility that he wouldn’t win the case.
"You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along. "- Eleanor Roosevelt.
Atticus honestly tried his best to win the case for Tom, but the town had already made their decision when they first heard of the case. It took incredible courage to defend a black man in the 1930s. He tells Scout “ Simply because we are licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win.” Atticus also displayed courage when he stood in front of the jail and protected Tom. He knew a mob of drunk countrymen would try to pull something and he was right.
“[Courage is] when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what” (Lee 112). When courage is mentioned, one may think of “a man with a gun in his hand” (112). This is a myth that Harper Lee debunks in her book To Kill A Mockingbird. Courage is a recurring and vital theme in her book because many of the characters show the other townspeople what courage looks like.
George was a good worker, but Lennie was an amazing worker with a tenacious work ethic and stamina. Lennie had incredible strength, but sometimes he did not understand just how massive he was. Many times throughout the book Lennie is caught hurting people or killing animals on accident. The biggest reason Lennie should not have been killed was because he was a major asset in the working force. That means he could have helped continue to bring in money towards the farm they dreamed about operating someday.
To Kill a Mockingbird - Courage "Courage is when you know you 're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what" According to Atticus Finch, an honest lawyer in Harper Lee 's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. "Real courage" is when you fight for what is right regardless of whether you win or lose. Atticus fits into this definition of what "real courage" is and demonstrates it several times throughout the novel. "The only thing we 've got is a black man 's word against the Ewells '.
The qualities of a hero may be being able to fly like Superman or shoot webs like spiderman but Atticus Finch has many heroic qualities of himself. Atticus is a hero because he never backs down from doing what's right, He defends and stands up for Tom Robinson, and finally he teaches his kids lesson that they will use for the rest of their life. My first reason that Atticus is a hero is that he never backs down from doing what's right. For example Atticus says "Come here...
“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear” (Nelson Mandela). This quote by Nelson Mandela reminds me of Atticus in the story To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus had enough courage to overcome any obstacle that stood in front of him defending him, his family, and Tom Robinson. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee many of the characters have similar traits.
George is the only one that treats Lennie like a person all the time. He even treats him with the respect and care he deserves even before he loses him forever. George calmly talks Lennie and tell him, “No, Lennie. I ain’t never been mad, an’ I ain’t now. That’s the thing
