Every person has motives or values that explain what they do and why they do it alot of times these values come from things they've experienced and choices they make. A lot of heroes have the same values which helps them make the right choices and have the mindset of a hero. Heroes tend to have values that are the same as other heroes. Most heroes have back stories that explain why they value what they do, however regardless of their backstory heroes tend to be the same. Heroes are created to represent cultural values which makes them create inspiration setting an example of what to do. Some examples of heroes are the characters Beowulf and superman. Superman is a superhero from the planet krypton which was destroyed so he was sent to earth …show more content…
Beowulf is very wise and pure however despite being from different places with different circumstances Beowulf and superman share the same values. This makes Beowulf and Superman proof that superheroes have the same values. Superman and beowulf have the same values we learn in the book that beowulf values being humility, loyalty, and self restraint and in the movie that superman shares the same values. One example of Beowulf showing the value of humility in the book is after he has just completed his great battles against the evil of the land. For example, in the book it states, “Beowulf was not greedy or ambitious. The gifts that hrothgar had given him he passed on to Hygelac ‘you are my king’ he said“ {nye 83} Beowulf he had just defeated the great evil of the land and saved them and the land celebrated him and gave him gifts but he passed them on and gave the praise to the king and did not boast about what he did. This clearly shows that Beowulf values humility because he does not boast and he does not take the praise of the people but instead directs it on others. …show more content…
This proves that superman values humility because he humbled himself and didn't use his power against the people even though he knew he was too powerful for the people to fight.Another value that Beowulf shares with superman is the value of self control or restraint. This is an important value for Beowulf because it allows him to stay calm and not act out. For example in the book it states, “only someone so wicked could eat witches' apples and come to no harm’ he insinuated darkly. Beowulf laughed… "I don't peel them myself,’ he said. "Things seem to lose something with their skins off don't you think but every man to his own taste”. {nye 27}. During this quote Unferth is trying to accuse Beowulf of being wicked because he can eat witches' apples Beowulf does not yell or argue he just simply replies that he does not peel the apples and why that wouldn't make him wicked. This proves that Beowulf values self restraint because he held himself back from getting angry and arguing and instead replied calmly with self control. One important value of supermans is also his value of self
Some heroes are more traditional and go on dangerous adventures, like Odysseus from The Odyssey by Homer. Whether we realize it or not, there are heroes who surround us in our everyday lives. In books and movies there are many different heroes that fit different themes. However,
When asked to describe a hero, Mickey Mantle, famous baseball player for the New York Yankees, Said “Heroes are people who are all good with no bad in them” This quote shows that a hero is someone who always does the right thing and has good intentions. What a hero should look like now is someone who is loyal and brave. In Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, Odysseus proves that he is a hero when he went to save his men on “Circe’s Island.” and defeated the cyclops in “The Cave of the Cyclops.”
Heroes are not defined or created by people or events that shape who they are but they are born to make a change. Throughout history there has been several heroes born to make a change. Heroes can be traced throughout history and still continue to exist. Heroes are born with a greater intention for their futures than mindlessly working through life; they are born to be leaders. Real heroes are born to set standards for the future and to lead the present.
We have heard of those princes' heroic campaigns.” (1-3) These lines show that courage is seen as a type of greatness. If Beowulf would have not been blessed with the courage that he has, the kingdom would not have viewed him the same way as a hero. It takes a lot of courage to be brave enough to stand up to a demon that has been terrorizing a kingdom for twelve years. Luckily, Beowulf had this courage and defeated Grendel which made him a
Two proper examples of heroes are, “The great and mighty Geat, Beowulf,” and “The intelligent and wise Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” Both guided their people and hoped to lead them to a greater place that was much more peaceful. Being Beowulf fighting
Beowulf possessed the poised demeanor necessary to defeat all evils by the arrogant swing of his sword. The commitment shown by lending his life to the welfare of his people was imperative in order to be called a flawless warrior. Beowulf embodied the determination that Anglo-Saxons saw as unmeasurably valuable. If nothing more than just fiction, Beowulf is the ideal hero of the people from who he originated. “They said that of all the kings upon the earth he was the man most gracious and fair-minded, kindest to his people and keenest to win fame.”
Heroes in our society are revered and respected as Joseph Campbell reminds us: “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Heroes exist in all societies and throughout history. Maybe they are not always on the news or from the movies, but their words and their actions never fail to resonate across their feats. A hero gives of himself and dedicates himself to causes which better others and their society unlike individuals who are self serving, greedy, and cruel.
Both Beowulf and Superman travel far and wide to defeat villains, save people, and encourage others. Their appearances are similar as well. Superman and Beowulf are dry, muscular, and strong. In fact, most people during their time would have considered them handsome. Both Beowulf and Superman have supernatural qualities.
Christopher Reeve (AKA the 1978 superman) said that, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles”. Both Beowulf and Modern day heroes are similar in that way in that they fight for the common good of people. That quote from Christopher Reeves on what a modern day hero is, also applies to the epic hero qualities that Beowulf has. Similarly Beowulf and a modern day hero defeat an evil so that good can prevail. Some examples are, Beowulf Slaying Grendel and Grendel's mother to save the land of the Danes, and soldiers fighting enemies that threaten the lives of a country, and police officers putting criminals behind bars.
He has true honor and respectfully distributes treasure and gifts to those whom he believes rightfully deserves them. Beowulf’s loyalty to the Danes helps shed light on his true character. He expresses that he believes he may die in battle between Grendel, but that does not dissuade him from fighting the beast. Another example is when Hygelac dies, Beowulf is asked to take the throne. In doing so, that would mean the the son of Hygelac would be stripped of his own inheritance, which is dishonorable in Beowulf’s eyes, and thus he declines the offer.
Beowulf is a strong heroic hero who shows honor, selfless, courage. Beowulf is a strong heroic hero in a way because heroes are protectors and he protected his people of his town. So he is a hero in fact a strong one and a loyal one. There is lots of ways he shows loyalty one i can show is “I had a fixed purpose when i came to sea as i sat in the boat with my band of men I meant to perform to the uttermost what your people wanted or perish in attempt in the fields clutches i shall fulfill my purpose prove myself of proud deeds or meat my death her in the mead-hall”(pages 632-639).I chose this quote because it shows that beowulf would give his head for his people. I think that beowulf wanted to die for his king after all that is the reason
This trait shows courage because it shows that beowulf is very powerful just by his strength alone without no weapons. To sum it up beowulf won over his fame by showing that he will never fear anyone and believing only on
Beowulf is only thinking about himself. Performing these acts alone just to get the fame forms the quality of selfishness in Beowulf. Beowulf is putting all of his strength to be credited as a hero, but he displays acts of selfishness which marks him as an insignificant
Beowulf only felt pure happiness. After World War World 2 Batman was filled with rage in the comic book world and he pushes a huge statue onto a crowd of Mongols, crushing them to death These were innocent people who’s country just happened to form an attack, but Batman was so upset about the attack he took it out on others. After doing this Batman showed no remorse and felt they deserved it. These heroes are both vengeful and filled with
Beowulf the mightiest hero, he kills demons, fights dragons, and does everything he can for the people, but how does he stack up against today's heroes like Spider Man. Beowulf can kill monsters, demons, and demons mothers, but what about if the circumstances were swapped. What if Beowulf had to fight some of the villains that a hero like Spider Man fights? Would he still be able to boast about taking them on bare handed? Comparing Beowulf to some of the villains of the comics may not make him seem as strong or have as much battle prowess.
