What do Christopher Columbus and Charles Lindbergh have in common? They were both explorers who impacted history and are both well known for being the first people to explore the New World and travel across the Atlantic Ocean. These two men, despite their 400 year difference, shared many differences and similarities in their voyages, what they hoped to achieve, the challenges they faced, and the skills they faced.
For one thing, Christopher Columbus and Charles Lindbergh’s challenges were very similar. On one hand, Christopher Columbus had to worry about challenges such as harsh weather, diseases, violent people, scarcity of food, dehydration, and the availability of a map. As a result of this, Christopher Columbus did not use a map, he didn’t follow the same route as the Portuguese explorers, and he persuaded his crew to trust him. However, Columbus did have a compass to help him and it navigated him to the New World. It can be proven that Columbus have more than just the average skills of an European. To conclude with, he corrected the Portuguese about their view of the Earth and its shape and this is why he chose his own route to explore. Charles Lindbergh also had skills such as his mind, curiosity, and mechanical skills. Charles Lindbergh was always curious around machines and he used the skills above to find as much info on the plane he was flying across the Atlantic Ocean. Popularity? Money? In this case, Columbus hope to achieve both fame and fortune. If Columbus completed this, he would get ten percent of everything he found, a noble title, and the right to to land if he finds any. Columbus went looking to find new land, gold, silver, spices,stones, and pearls because he had promised his Spanish patrons that he would give them a certain amount. Whereas, Columbus did not find much and would be punished if his patrons found out he lied. Indeed, Columbus did find enough merchandise and land to give to his Spanish patrons. Similarly, Lindbergh hoped to achieve fame other than his daredevil career. New York hotelier, Raymond Orteig, was offering 25,000 dollars for the first person to fly solo from New York to Paris or Paris to New York. Lindbergh decided to take a shot at it and was showered with fans and fame when he successfully landed. However, Lindbergh’s fame might have costed him too much. The family’s babysitter put Lindbergh's one year old son in his crib around 8:00 p.m and left. Around 9:30 p.m, Lindbergh heard a noise and went upstairs to see what it was. When he arrived, his son was not in his crib but a blackmail letter was. Frantically, he rushed out the house with his gun and called the police. Lindbergh told reporters that he thinks it had to do with his fame and the money he had won from the journey. In conclusion, this is what two of the greatest voyagers hoped
