Jay Gatsby and Tom Buchanan; two men with different lives but are connected by corruption. They both live rich lives, consequently their money gets into their heads. They start thinking that they are in control of everything around them. Their actions reflect in today’s society with the image of sculpting a person to its perfection. Corruption plays a big role for Tom, Gatsby, and the world today. Gatsby’s life seems healthy and well off with his grand parties and huge mansion but as the book progresses, he finds Daisy again and starts losing interest in the world around him. Tom is so engrossed in his world and affair with Myrtle that he does not realize that he can also be cheated on. After finding out that Daisy has been seeing Gatsby, he gets defensive and possessive over his wife even though he has been seeing another woman, he gets uptight and states “...I love Daisy too. Once in awhile i go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back” (131), even as he says this Tom never admits to Daisy that he is having one of those “sprees” during that same time. There are also many rules and molds that a person has to fit into to be socially acceptable such as what type of clothes a person wears or how a person is supposed to act or portray themselves in certain situations. With these specific regulations, people hide their identities to get them what they want. They also deceive others into thinking that they have good morals. These actions come with consequences leading up to corruption in that person and the society.
