Both King and Douglass were advocating for the same thing: their constitutional sanction of freedom. Both men, in their respective letters touch upon parallel thoughts and beliefs that revolve around the much bigger topic of racial inequality and discrimination. Both men were discriminated against and they talk about their experiences and plight in their very distinctive yet special styles. Born in the year 1817, in an era of open and unashamed slave trade, Frederick Douglass’s story begins as a serf to Mrs. Hugh in the city of Maryland. Eventually, he got his education and his freedom and escaped the slave trade, after having suffered repeatedly at the hands of his ‘owners’.
He was inspiring the fame of being a presusaive writer and speaker he then moved on the bigger and better things he didn’t let his past get in the way of his future. He talked mainly about racism and slavery he wanted to end both of those things. Frederick Douglass was a man who also knew what he wanted he wanted to be free! He wanted to end racism he wanted to end slavery he didn’t want to be a slave all his life and by using the underground railroad he was able to escape. We are able to be free because people like Frederick Douglass who wasn’t afraid to speak up and say what they wanted to say and by doing that we have what we have today.
In the 19th century, the anti-slavery people or called abolitionist wanted to end slavery. Abolitionist had a program named Abolitionist Movement. They want freedom in their life and believing that “all men are created equal.” This program was created by some people who wanted to end slavery and racial discrimination. So many people suffered because of. There is a gap between white people and black people.
I think what motivated Julius to write this short story is he has a passion for studying slavery, his 3 grandparents were slaves themselves. He also grew up in the 40’s through the 60’s and was very active with protesting. I would like to think that this short story would be Julius Lester’s view on how he would approach the scenario Spear is in if his dad was one of the greatest civil rights leaders. The reason why I would like to think that is, Julius wants there to be no bypass towards people because of their, race, religion, or ethnicity. Julius constructs the ideal person, the main character, nicknamed Spear.
Towards the end, Huck is the boy who helped a slave get his freedom and his rights, If there were to be another boy in Huck’s place, he would’ve loved having a slave do all his work for him. Huck on the other hand is very uncomfortable having a slave do his work for him, because he is not used to it and rather do everything himself. Although Huck hold on to the aspect of racism, he still has more respect for blacks than others at the time being. Huck’s has been raised in a place and time, where slavery and difference between men was normal. In the beginning of the novel, Huck didn’t respect black people and didn’t care about them either.
However, in the past people didn’t have all the rights of liberty and freedom. The freedom of today are based on the suffering that Frederick Douglass and his people have been through, and how they fought for people to gain their own freedom. Frederick Douglass was one of the great men that changed many people’s lives and made great effort to obtain freedom. His mother was a slave too. Frederick was not like other slaves, he had learnt how to read and write.
Uncle Tom 's Cabin, written by Harriet Breecher Stowe, is still critically acclaimed and recognized today for its prolific affects towards the abolition of slavery in the United States. It opened the eyes of Northerner 's and Southerners alike to the horrors of slavery and its degradation of another human being. Challenging the notion at that time, that slaves were property and not "human", Stowe 's work asserts that slaves too were thinking, feeling, and valuable human beings. Through her writings, Stowe presented the reader another view about the "peculiar institution"; that slavery was not only morally offensive, but a reflection of the base rational held by those who supported the act. In her novel, Stowe primarily focuses on how the treatment of slaves reflects the real attitude amongst citizens towards slavery.
In Beloved, Morrison expresses the impact that slavery has on the black community. We come to know about the past events when Paul D and Sethe communicates about their commonly shared past at Sweet Home. The owners of Sweet Home were Mr. and Mrs. Garner, who dealt with their slaves respectfully. Despite that the slaves at Sweet Home did not have legal or social rights, the Garners allowed them many liberties like to select wives, handle weapons, learn how to read and even buy a mother’s freedom. Still Mr. Garner was a disappointing person as he was a slave owner.
Learning how to do those two things would benefit slaves in many ways but the masters wanted nothing but cruelty to slaves. There were some free African americans during these times and they learned to read and write. Once Frederick learned how to read and write, he realized he could now do something about slavery unlike those who didn’t know how to read or
Uproar and protest bubbled over in the states after Scott’s failure to obtain his freedom. His case also fueled the North in their battle with the South, since the big topic of the century was “slavery”. They wanted justice for Dred Scott, to rightfully place his ownership in his own hands, to grant him the freedom to live however he pleased and to not have to walk in shackles. Any human should have that basic right, as it says in the constitution. This landmark of a case stood as a breaking point for social reform; motivation to stop the discrimination that ran throughout the country.
The purpose of the Underground Railroad was to free slaves from the ownership of slave owners, and did just that. Over 100,000 thousand slaves were freed from slave owners, and they managed to live their own lives. While slaves escaping did bring about anti-black sentiment from the Southern States most clearly seen in the Fugitive Slave Act, it brought support for abolition because white people could see that all the slaves were just as human as the rest of them. This may not have changed their beliefs of inferiority, but it did change their beliefs that African Americans deserved such cruel treatment. After the awareness of the slaves’ capabilities and the living in communities with slaves, white people in the North that still supported slavery changed their stance after seeing first hand that black people, not just the few free blacks, were similar to everyone else.
Frederick was a man of many things. African-American social reformer, abolitionist, writer, orator, and a former slave. But what made him become this great man. The fact that he was a former slave allowed him to understand firsthand the terrors of slavery. He could read and write, which was instrumental in his life.
