In our world today, we can still see the effects of the Salem Witch trials through accusing those who are on the margins of deeds we don’t want to take responsibility for. The first victims to be accused within the Salem Witch Trials were those who didn’t fit the social norms of society at the time. From the beginning, Abigail Williams has power over those who are below her. Not only does she possess this power, she lords it over those who are seen as valueless in a society built for the rich and for men. When placed in the hot seat after being discovered dancing in the woods, Abigail throws the weakest person she can find under the bus: Tituba.
Sadly, this title was not enough for him so Macbeth’s imagination had the “witches” prophecy be that Macbeth would become the Thane of Cawdor (which he already knew) and a king. The prophecy was an escape route for the little bit of good that he had within him so that the murder of King Duncan would be justifiable because the witches said that he would. All of these sick and demented thoughts drove Macbeth to kill all of those people but there is also another layer on the downfall of
Bearing in mind the facts about her distressing childhood life, her love for John and terror for her life it is possible to deduce that it was the fault of Abigail for the tragedy to occur in the town of the Salem. Her deceitfulness almost makes her impractical because she practices witchcraft in order to win back her lover, Proctor, she laid false evidence of witchcraft in Elizabeth’s home with a hope to direct her to the scaffolds and she persuades young women to dance in the woods which was an illegal act. The writer progresses from sightseeing the unconscious to exploring the unconditioned and raw responses that go deeper than basic desires and ambitions, particularly when challenged with ones’ mortality. A deduction can also be made that the more Abigail Williams learnt how to use her interim capabilities to upset the townspeople, the more she appreciated the power she had. Abigail Williams collects the information necessary to style the position of supremacy for herself.
Macbeth is certainly by far the most evil character in the play. Macbeth evidently undergoes a mental process by which he come round to the idea or murdering Duncan. He does this as a result of his wife’s manipulation, her leverage being his manliness.Without the role of Lady Macbeth, the murder of King Duncan would never have occurred in the play. Lady Macbeth had already been plotting for the murder since she received the letter concerning the three prophecies by the witches. Although Macbeth had sinister thoughts about having the throne, Macbeth would have never dared to take it upon himself to kill King Duncan and steal the throne from
He uses supernatural themes, violent themes and more. He is able to show the audience the influence of fate and free will have on people and how their lives were effected. As Macbeth rises in power he seeks advice form the witches and fear of being overthrown he starts killing those who he think are a threat to the throne. Quote from the third witch, “All hail, Macbeth, thou shalt be king hereafter! Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none.
She is the darkest side of his husband because she is the main driving force behind the murder of Duncan because she encourages him, and the attempt to cover it up. She acts like the witches, with manipulation, showing him that to murder someone is not such a thing, and that he must “be a man”. What Lady Macbeth does not know, is that sooner or later the consequences arrive. She is blinded by her want for him to become king and her ambition wins. Additionally, Lady Macbeth takes the witches predictions and try to become them true, she leverages that opportunity to make it reality.
(4.1 77-78, 85-87, 100-102) Due to the newly shown prophecies for Macbeth, the witches manipulate him into believing the prophecies and make him over confident about Macbeth’s false sense of security. Eventually Macbeth, without knowing of the real truth behind the prophecies, is lead to his excruciating
Abigail and her group of friends around found in the forest doing witchcraft to get their love interest to fall for the however they are caught by her uncle Parris and instead of confessing and telling the truth she lies to her uncle Parris by claiming she was just dancing. Due to her act Abigail’s sister Betty is unconscious and the whole town is convinced it’s witchcraft, causing mayhem throughout the community also known as mass hysteria. In the book The Tipping point it states “... convinced that he is being contaminated by some unseen evil- in the past it was demons and spirits; nowadays it tends to be toxings and gases.” This is how mass hysteria is starts, a collective illusion which if clearly shown in the play. In the play Abigail proclaims, “She lies! She sends her spirit into me, and makes me laugh at prayer!
Did the witches have such supernatural powers which overpowered him as soon as he came into their contact? Or were all the stories of his bravery fake? The war and Macbeth’s win was perhaps designed by the witches to control Macbeth in a way to push him towards his ambition of murdering the monarch for monarchy! Macbeth comes in front of us as a very indecisive man. He cannot even question the witches first, it is banquo who interrogates them.
“Ribner then examines duncan’s murder, arguing that this specific act of evil corrupts all levels of creation, contaminating the family, the state, and the physical universe.” The quote said that it corrupts all levels of creation which includes peoples innocence and maybe Lady Macbeth had her innocence finally sealed off for good after Duncan had finally died, and maybe this is why she feels guilt for an act she did not physically commit. She did have a part in goading him into the murder so she could bear the title of the queen so maybe she is just as physically guilty as he. “ The guilt is thus more equally divided than we should suppose when we hear people pitying ‘the noble nature of Macbeth,’ bewildered and goaded on to crime, solely or chiefly by the instigation of his wife. ”The things Lady Macbeth has known started coming out in her sleep as she sleep walked towards the end of the story. She had spoken “The thane of fife had a wife.
