The book “To Kill A Mockingbird” tells the story of how racist and misogynistic the south was in the 1930’s. Jean louise Finch narrates the book zand tells the story of Scout finch who is an illusion to her younger self.
Jean Louise is different from Scout because she's smart, educated, mature and she understands far more than Scout does. Scout is only six, so she doesn't have the best understanding of what's going on around her. She’s seeing the world through the eyes of a six year old. Jean Louise sees the standard racism or that Walter Cunningham is very poor. Scout on the other hand, sees this is normal since its been that way her whole life and no one has told her any different. Persona is the aspect of someone's character that is presented

One example of this is when Atticus shakes his head at her, She doesn't understand that he’s telling her to be quiet. Lee’s purpose of using this example in the book, was showing how ironic it is for Atticus to use such a small gesture and Scout still didn't understand. Another example of this is Scout not understanding Cal’s place in their household. To anyone over 13, you can obviously see that Calpurnia is their housekeeper / maid but through the eyes of a six-year-old, I see how you could get confused. Calpurnia does everything that a mother would for them, yet she’s a different color. Harper Lee’s reason for this example is to show how naïve Scout is to the bigger picture around her. The last example would be when she thinks that Walter Cunningham got her in trouble with Ms. Fisher but it was her fault. She doesn’t understand that she was being rude and disrespectful that’s why she got in trouble. Harper Lee’s reason for using this example was that she’s trying to explain how Scout is truly miss interpreting …show more content…
On nearly every page of the book, I can find metaphors, similes, puns, analogies, personification and more. Lee's writing style uses figurative language to create special effects and special meanings. Three different types of figurative language in the book are Imagery, Allusion, and Symbolism. Lee chose symbolism to create atmosphere with different parts of the story. She used Imagery to understand what things were like for the Finch family. Allusion was used as a way to slightly confuse you in the way that a child thinks. An example of Symbolism is when it says “Like a fog in a river bank”. They live in the South so there's many riverbanks and riverbanks are known to be a foggy area. Lee is suing this as a way to show what the atmosphere of this Quote is coming from. An example of Allusion is on page 3 it says “ If General Jackson had not run the creeks up the creek”. The creeks he refers to is a play on words about the Indians. It's confusing you because it's what Scout is talking about in her child like mind. An example of Imagery would be on page 210 “ The feeling grew until the atmosphere in the courtroom was exactly the same as a cold February morning” Lee is talking about how the atmosphere of the courtroom was so quiet and still, it was similar to that of a cold february morning. The writer's purpose for using figurative language is to truly give way on the meanings and feelings that
One character that I can connect with is Scout. I connect to Scout because she has an older brother just like me. In the book and movie, it shows that Jem sometimes gets annoyed by his sister. I sometimes annoy my brother and he gets mad too, which is similar to Jem and Scout. Scout is also a very curious person.
This shows that to be able to know someone’s point of view you need to stand in their shoes and walk in them. Scout was able to understand Arthur as well as Jem by Being able to View things in their perspective and truly understand it. She thought Arthur was mean, grumpy and scary but until she stood in his porch she was able to understand his way of thinking and doing. Similar to Arthur’s, Scout had to be able to know Jem’s point of view to be able to understand what his perspective
“Confusion can actually be a good thing,” is a statement made by Tania Lombrozo. Confusion is one of the many writing techniques that Harper Lee, author of To Kill Mockingbird, illustrates throughout her novel. To Kill A Mockingbird is about a young girl, Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, whose views about others change year after year, especially after her father is put as the defense attorney for the most exhilarating trial in Maycomb, Alabama. She learns to see things from other people's perspectives, never give up, and that someone should never hurt anything that has not harmed them. Harper Lee uses pleasure and disquietude to depict the events throughout the novel and to create a “healthy confusion”.
Atticus Finch said “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view-...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”(Lee 39). As a result of this quote out main character will change. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird Harper Lee uses the character and characterization of Scout to show how empathy can change someone’s life for the better. Throughout the book Scout changes quite a bit. In the beginning she was very tomboyish choosing to wear overalls instead of dresses, she also liked to beat other kids up.
Clearly, it is using literary element Point of View. Scout struggles, with varying degrees of success, to put Atticus’s advice into practice and to live with sympathy and understanding toward others. She is trying to see how other people interpret things being done or said. (Transition). “People thought he was bad.
And Scout’s confusion is perfectly understandable. In To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus shares knowledge to Scout with this simple quote: “First of all… if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks.” This is Atticus’ introduction to the main idea “... You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb in his skin
To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee about her life in the early 1960’s. To Kill a Mockingbird shows Scouts life and the events that lead up to her meeting Boo Radley. In To Kill a Mockingbird Scout discovers hot to grow up through her life. First off in To Kill a Mockingbird Scout discovers growing up through her life the first character that shows this is Atticus. In Maycomb Scout was having a bad day and her dad teaches her a life lesson “You will never understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb in his skin and walk around in it” (page:39).
Coming of Age Coming-of-age is difficult for both teens and parents. The parents often have trouble parenting when the teenager is disrespectful and confused. Teenagers do not realize that their parents have been in the same shoes as them and know what is best for them.. Coming-of-age involves recognizing different perspectives.
In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the author shows that Scout is self-centered through the use of indirect characterization. When Scout brings a tire for Dill, Jem, and her to play with, they start arguing about who will go first and Scout comes out and says “I’m first” (Lee 49). She doesn’t even take what the other two want into consideration. All she cares about is her going first in the tire. While Scout is leaving her classroom at the end of the day, her teacher is crying and she says that “Had her conduct been friendly toward me, I would have felt sorry for her” (Lee 29).
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, there are many similarities between the narrator, Scout, and the author, Harper Lee. For instance, both grew up in the time of the great depression with little money to do extra things; therefore, they relied on their imaginations to entertain them for hours (Haggerty) . Comparatively, both were tomboys in their youths and grew up in small towns where girls were expected to wear dresses and act like a lady. Also, both Harper Lee and Scout both grew up with their fathers being lawyers for their town and would often hear of cases that they worked on (“Harper Lee”) . Similarly, when writing her book a “mad dog warning” was released, no doubt giving the idea for the episode of the mad dog Tim Robinson.
If someone infuriated you for what they’ve done, would you destroy their possessions? Sometimes it’s better if you understand what someone is going through instead of being an persecutor, or causing great damage to one’s property. What you see from the outside of a person is not who they are in the inside. “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (Page 39)
Race has always been a part of history, from slavery to MLK, to Barack Obama. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee defines race in the south during the 1930’s. Jean “Scout” Finch, is the narrator of the story. Her brother Jeremy “Jem” and her dad, Atticus, are both main characters. Calpurnia is their house cook and helper, she is also black.

The novel takes place in a small Alabama town called Maycomb during the 1930s, a period when racism and segregation were heavily prominent in society. Scout’s father, Atticus Finch, is an esteemed lawyer with beliefs that differ from others and a strong desire to do the right thing.
