Even when we get hurt by the people we truly love, we can’t let go of them. We keep loving them because we know one day the pain will subside and we can move forward with life. Once we move past it and realise the truth behind the feelings, we decide we could do anything for them, even lie. Elizabeth Proctor in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible women who was hurt by the man she loved do to one fatal mistake he made with Abigail Williams. Elizabeth fought through the thoughts for their love when it was hard to forget and all the trials going on around them.
In the Crucible, many of the characters go through changes because of the intensity of the situation. But there is only one character that I think changed the most, and that is John Proctor who is the protagonist of the novel The Crucible by Arthur Miller. I think that John Procotor changes the most in the Crucible because he is in every act and mostly in every scene, and throughtout the play I see more drama (Dynamic Character) in him than any other character in the Crucible and I will go through and tell you how John Proctor changes in the Crucible.
“Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!”(1272). These words by John Proctor exemplify his character by making, in my opinion, not a very wise decision. In the play The Crucible, John Proctor’s unwillingness can be seen as selfish because others hung before he confessed his affair with Abigail but he redeemed himself by undoing his confession and refusing to sell the court other names, which Arthur Miller used to convey a message about a crucible being put through a fire/trial and coming out in its purest form, through the character of John
John Proctor was a man of honor and had a well respected name in the town of Salem. Sadly he died tragically but as a hero. He was hanged because he was accused of doing the devil’s work. He was given the chance to save his life if he admitted on a piece of paper that he was working with the devil but he refused to tell that lie. He wanted his sons to be able to walk the streets without being shunned from the world because they deserved better. John Proctor didn’t want his name to be the ruined because he felt that was all he had left. John Proctor was tragically killed for a sin he had not committed but was found a hero because people followed in his footsteps by not confessing to something they didn’t do.
Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. During this time, many people are hung for being accused of performing witchcraft, but who is there to blame? During this time, many people feared for their lives, and others used this as a time to get rid of people. In The Crucible, Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Deputy-Governor Danforth are responsible for the witch trials in Salem.
Arthur Asher Miller was born on October 17, 1915 in Harlem, NY, and was the son of two Polish immigrants. His father owned a successful clothing shop and the family was wealthy until the stock market crash of 1929, the start of the Great Depression. The family moved to Brooklyn afterwards. Unable to go college after high school, Miller worked numerous odd jobs until he was accepted into the University of Michigan. There he wrote his first play, No Villain. Miller’s playwright professor was Kenneth Rowe, who taught him various techniques to create intricate plays. Due to a college football injury, he was not in active service during World War II, thus starting his writing career.
1. John Proctor is a tall man. He has long brown hair and a short beard and mustache. He has a bold personality and cares about his family. He stands up for what he believes in no matter what the cost. His family is important to him and he will do anything to protect them and make them happy.
The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is about real life events that has been changed a bit by the author. The play is set back in 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts, were the Salem Witchcraft Trials were going on. The Witchcraft Trials were trials that mostly girls, but some men got accused of seeing the devil and doing work for him. If you were accused of being a witch you were to admit to seeing the devil, accuse other people, or you would get hung. Some people wouldn 't admit to being a witch just to save their life because of their faith in Jesus. Like a guy named John Proctor, who had an affair with a girl named Abigail. He was trying to stop the trials to save his wife Elizabeth Proctor but while he was doing it, he got accused to being a witch
The Crucible, a play by Arthur Miller, is about real life events during the Salem Witchcraft Trials in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Though most of the events in the play are real, some things are fictional. For example, John Proctor was a real person, but his character was exaggerated to make the play more interesting. In the play John Proctor and Abigail Williams had an affair, sometime after the affair ended Abigail began accusing people of witchcraft. John Proctor’s wife is eventually accused by Abigail, because Abigail was jealous of her relationship with John. In John 's effort to save his wife, he is accused and by the end of the play he is hanged because he won’t falsely admit to being a witch. Some readers feel that John Proctor is flawed because of all the bad things he has done, he is actually honorable because he is honest.
Published in 1952, during a period of cold war tensions, which culminated in the ideological witch trials of the mcarthy era in America; The crucible by Arthure miller is set in 1692 during the witch trials in salem massachusetts. The author has used allegory to position the reader to draw parrelels betweeen the to time periods and critisize the persecution that occured in both eras. One of the main themes that Miller has used to portray this viewpoint is the representation of personal integrity. Integrity is the quality of having strong moral pronciples. This is acheived through strongly contrasted characterisation of characters such as Abigail williams and and Rebecca Nurse, aswell as the inclusion of textual features such as irony, symbolism
A month later in August another case came up. Elizabeth and John Proctor.. When the trials started John always said that the three affiliated girls were lying. But no one ever believed him. One day is servant Mary Warren began acting strange with very awkward behavior. John hit her so she could behave. On April 2nd her fits stopped. Days later her fits returned and she decided to become a witness in the Salem Witch Trials. She accused Elizabeth of using witchcraft.
The name of my book in “The Crucible.” The book was written by Arthur Miller and published in 1952. The setting is in Salem, Massachusetts in 1962 during The Salem Witch Trials. This book is also a drama or play.
John Proctor is another character who encounters the effects of groupthink trying to define him. John is a local farmer who is married to Elizabeth Proctor and is a very strong and independent man. He also fears that people will associate his name with sin, which may impact his decision not to plead guilty to witchcraft. Acknowledging that he tries to be a man of God, he confessed to having an affair with Abigail, which jeopardized his marriage and put his reputation of being a man of God at risk. Therefore, why would he not confess to being involved with witchcraft if the price was his life?
In the play, The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller the two main female roles can be compared and contrasted.
Pride is a personal commitment. Keep in mind how pride connects to personal commitment when talking about a tragic hero in The Crucible. Although many people may assume that Reverend Hale is the tragic hero of The Crucible, I believe John Proctor is because how he makes Mary Warren confess to the court about how Abigail and the girls are lying about conjuring the devil, Proctor also confesses about having an affair with Abigail.
