Due to Abigail's jealousy and revenge for Elizabeth she mentions Elizabeth's name during the Salem witch trials which causes nothing but chaos. John Proctor displayed his character traits of aggression and anger throughout the story in fear of his integrity being ruined. He was considered a tragic hero because of his downfall in trying to protect his integrity. Even though Elizabeth Proctor had the traits of innocence and compassion she still lacked affection towards her husband. This in turn led John to commit adultery with their housekeeper. These two characters demonstrate these traits throughout the story. Even after John committed adultery, Elizabeth still had compassion for him and lied to protect him. Both characters demonstrated these characteristics until they both were killed at the end of the

John Proctor is a farmer and he is married to Elizabeth Proctor. Proctor is a strong and stern man who hates hypocrites and hypocrisy. Throughout this book Proctor tries to pull off being the well put together man that he has been raised to be and that he has been his whole life. However, this all fails when he commits a sin, one that is one of the worst things to do during this time period. He had an affair with the young Abigail Williams.
In the play “The Crucible”, by Arthur Miller, grudges and personal rivalries play a huge role in the witch trials. Mary and Elizabeth get accused for witchcraft at one point of time in the book. They get accused because of the personal rivalry that Abigail and John Proctor have with each other. John Proctor and Abigail used to meet up behind the shed by the church. This brought them closer together and Abigail's feelings for John got worse and worse.
In the play, The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller the two main female roles can be compared and contrasted. One way that Elizabeth and Abigail are the same is that they both loved John Proctor. Elizabeth and John were in a more committed relationship. They were married and had kids. Were Abigail and John were just fooling and around and had an affair.
John Proctor is another character who encounters the effects of groupthink trying to define him. John is a local farmer who is married to Elizabeth Proctor and is a very strong and independent man. He also fears that people will associate his name with sin, which may impact his decision not to plead guilty to witchcraft. Acknowledging that he tries to be a man of God, he confessed to having an affair with Abigail, which jeopardized his marriage and put his reputation of being a man of God at risk.
He is a very hard working farmer who loved his family with all his heart. He had an affair with Abigail Williams. He was hung and killed for being a “Witch”. Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. During this time, many people are hung for being accused of performing witchcraft, but who is there to blame? During this time, many people feared for their lives, and others used this as a time to get rid of people. Even Proctor's close friends could not believe that he had committed adultery, because of how so much good they expected from him. Proctor's kindness, nobility, and heroic personality is what made him who he truly is which is a tragic hero. Nobility is the definition of a tragic hero, which ties into pride being a personal commitment. Which Proctor stood out to fit the definition and characteristics of being a tragic hero, he sacrificed his life to save his
People in the Crucible thought he was an honorable man and that no honorable man will ever sin. So when John and Abigail meet each other, Abigail flirts with John, and John say, “No, no, Abby. That’s done with.” So we know he has committed adultery against his wife, Elizabeth Proctor, with Abigail Williams and that gives us a bad image of John sinning and commiting adultery with Abigail and doesn’t really respect his wife.
John Proctor didn’t want his name to be the ruined because he felt that was all he had left. John Proctor was tragically killed for a sin he had not committed but was found a hero because people followed in his footsteps by not confessing to something they didn’t do. “A tragic hero is a character
In the book The Crucible by Arthur Miller many characters were portrayed throughout the book. The two characters I am going to go into depth about are Elizabeth and John Proctor. Elizabeth and her husband, John Proctor, were accused of witchcraft, tried, and sentenced to hang. Elizabeth Bassett Proctor, was born to William and Lexi Burt Basset in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1652. She grew up to marry John Proctor, who was about 20 years older than her, on April 1, 1674.
Proctor is looked up to because he resembles and shows heroic characteristics in either one way or another. At the same time he is a tragic hero because of one huge flaw, an affair. The affair took place between him and Abigail. In the play they are at court and Proctor is upset because and lashes out towards Abigail. Claiming she would lead him away from Elizabeth and dance on her grave.
Published in 1952, during a period of cold war tensions, which culminated in the ideological witch trials of the mcarthy era in America; The crucible by Arthure miller is set in 1692 during the witch trials in salem massachusetts. The author has used allegory to position the reader to draw parrelels betweeen the to time periods and critisize the persecution that occured in both eras. One of the main themes that Miller has used to portray this viewpoint is the representation of personal integrity. Integrity is the quality of having strong moral pronciples. This is acheived through strongly contrasted characterisation of characters such as Abigail williams and and Rebecca Nurse, aswell as the inclusion of textual features such as irony, symbolism
Another reason why John Proctor is such a Flawed man is because he is so quick to anger. He get mad very easily and he goes off on people to make them feel like a bad person when they didnt do anything wrong. Like Elizabeth every night he tries to talk to him and he yells at her because she ask to many questions or she doesn 't do it the right
John Proctor's main flaw was his excessive pride which sealed his fate. I myself felt his death transformed Salem’s ways of thinking and increased their own knowledge. Proctor's life completely started going downhill when Abigail accused John’s loved ones who then were sent to jail, or executed. John Proctor was a man of goodness and pride which cleansed his soul after he suffered a tragic death, and became a symbol of purity and greatness for others to
