“His face without expression,I could not tell whether he laughed inwardly or not”(Rebecca 37). Gatsby, a man that has suddenly become and rich has moved to West egg, and Mr. De Winter, a man who has tragically lost his first wife, both share similarities between each other. In the novels, Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier , and ,The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald , they both share strong comparisons and contrasts like how Mr. Winter’s and Gatsby 's ways of presenting themselves are both similar. In fact, both Gatsby and Mr.De Winter both have certain subjects that they avoid or don 't speak of often. “For when I asked him what business he was in he answered, That 's my affair”(Gatsby 90). Gatsby tends to avoid anything to have to do with his business or his past. From time to time he will say something that does not coincide with what he always says when someone brings up his business or his past. In addition, Mr.De Winter reacts a certain way after his second wife Mrs.De Winter brings up his former wife, “He received it silently, making no comment”(Rebecca 38). Mr.De Winter is not open about his feelings ,especially if it is about his first wife. Mr.De Winter chooses not to show his emotions for a reason. Furthermore, there are strong contrast between Daisy and Mrs.DeWinter. “You look so cool ,You always look so cool”(Gatsby 119). This is how Daisy chooses to tell Gatsby that she loves him. Daisy should have made it clear that she loved Gatsby and not Tom. She is unclear about how she feels towards Gatsby and Tom. In addition, Mrs.DeWinter was straight to the point when talking to Mr.DeWinter about her feelings, “I do love you. I love you dreadfully”(Rebecca 52). Mrs.DeWinter tells Mr.DeWinter how she feels after he proposed to her. She is upfront about how she feels about Mr.DeWinter. As a result, they have different forms of telling their partners that they love
Characters in novels can have obsessions with people, the same as in the world readers live in today. In the passage Winter Dreams, Dexter, the main male character, is obsessed with a woman, Judy Jones. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote both of these novels/ passages. F. Scott Fitzgerald was not only a writer but an alcoholic as well. He wrote his short story “Winter Dreams” while he was coming up with ideas for his novel The Great Gatsby. Both of these stories were written about new money versus old money, as well as kept the idea that humans want what they could have had. Ernest Hemingway wrote about these topics as well, putting his own life experiences into his writing. When he was hurt during WWI, he met a girl whom he planned to marry.
Having two best friends is wonderful, but we all know how horrible it is when they fight and you become the mediator. Upon working out the drama and hear two different stories. Likewise, the film and book, The Great Gatsby have a vast discrepancy between them. Not only did Luhrmann have the nerve to leave out a major piece of text , but also one of the most important quotes.
Gatsby was a very mysterious man. Every time he was put into a conversation

The seasons were changing from summer to fall, and on the day of his death it was said to be a warm day with yellowing trees and falling leaves. He was awaiting a phone call that came too late. So while he floated in this pool unaware that it would be his first and last time, Nick Carraway thinks, “I have an idea that Gatsby himself didn’t believe it would come and perhaps he no longer cared. If that was true he must have felt that he had lost the old warm world, paid a high price for living too long with a single dream. He must have looked up at an unfamiliar sky through frightening leaves and shivered as he found what a grotesque thing a rose is and how raw the sunlight was upon the scarcely created grass” (Fitzgerald 169).
Risk taking, ground breaking changes, and wild parties are all important aspects of the 1920’s. The massive parties that included dancing, alcohol, and a house full of strangers were so essential to this magical era that F. Scott fitzgerald made them a key element in his book, “The Great Gatsby.” These extravagant parties that Jay Gatsby was notorious for hosting, attracted strangers from all corners of New York to take part in these luxurious events. These parties were so popular and well known in the eastern New York area that they basically become Gatsby’s trademark. Upon hearing the name “Gatsby” guests did not visualize the face of a young man, but rather envisioned the wild parties he threw.
“Winter Dreams” was written in 1926, several years before and after World War I. Fitzgerald is most known for his novel The Great Gatsby, which ‘Winter Dreams” was originally supposed to be included in to give a background of the characters in The Great Gatsby. The common theme in Fitzgerald’s work is the idea of the American dream. He also likes to write about the poor boy falling in love with the rich girl that he cannot have. The short story “Winter Dreams” is about a young man named Dexter Green who falls in love with Judy Jones, and takes many years to realize he was not in love with her, but more her looks. Fitzgerald uses characterization to portray his characters as corrupt people who only care about their own wellbeing.
Hamlet and The Great Gatsby are very similar because of their themes. Hamlet, written by Shakespeare in 1603, and The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925 share the themes of madness, vengeance, mortality, murder, and disloyalty. Although the plots are not very alike, the two main characters in each have similar qualities. These characters are not exactly the same, their flaws and actions both lead them to being disloyal to others, including themselves, and in the end, their death. Both Hamlet and Gatsby were obsessed with their past and trying to solve it.
They both love Daisy in their own way and do not want to lose her. Gatsby states, “Both of us loved each other all that time” (Fitzgerald 138). Gatsby wants Daisy to tell Tom she never loved him so that they can be together, but she cannot because it would not be true. Daisy says to Gatsby, “I did love him once-but I loved you too”(Fitzgerald 140). Daisy used to love both of them but chooses Tom because she is used to life with Tom and does not change.
The past has not just directed him to his present but continues to make his decisions on behalf of any underlying personality. This is reminiscent of Jay Gatsby. At a glance, Jay Gatsby and Joe Christmas have nothing in common. Gatsby is wealthy, successful, and the center of parties in Long Island; Christmas is poor, isolated, and unable to establish a place in society for himself. However, underneath the facade that Gatsby exudes, he and Christmas are peculiarly similar.
In The Great Gatsby, we learn more and more about the characters, Gatsby and Nick, as the story unravels deeper. Although these characters seem to have many differences, they have more in common than recognized. Throughout the novel, we see some corresponding traits between Gatsby and Nick. Despite these two having somewhat indistinguishable attitudes towards women and desires, they differ in their class, and their outlook and temperament. Gatsby and Nick in a way have the same desire and approach towards women.
“His dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him.” The Great Gatsby is a classic novel which offers insight into American culture while still understandable to readers. It shows a pocket of “roaring twenties” culture. The language style is comprehensible, but still offers rich examples of literary devices such as motifs, symbols, and irony.
