One of these devices that plays a huge portion in achieving this is diction, or his word choice. The way he words things helps greatly in showing how people from the upper classes may have spoken. During this time, wealthier people spoke with more elegance and class than those of the lower class. Throughout the novel, both Jay and Nick use cultivated and sophisticated terms. In Of Mice and Men, you see how those in the lower class spoke. Most in the lower class were uneducated due to the fact that they couldn't afford schooling. George, Lennie, and the majority of the workers seem to be very illiterate and impressed by what they see as large amounts of money. The diction in each book show complete different ways of speaking, educated and wealthy against uneducated and poor. In example, a quote from Of Mice and Men: "For two bits I'd shove out of here. If we can get jus' a few dollars in the poke we'll shove off and go up the American River and pan gold. We can make maybe a couple of dollars a day there, and we might hit a pocket." Just by this quote you can see how people of the lower class …show more content…
The formation of this plot is a huge contribution towards developing the many themes. The main theme of wealth and education is brought about by the showings of Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway's lifestyles. You read about the great and extravagant parties that Jay throws. Many people, even if uninvited, come to his parties because of how wonderful they are. Jay has a very large house which has many luxurious items and add-ons which are explained throughout the book. In example, "We went upstairs, through period bedrooms swathed in rose and lavender silk and vivid with new flowers, through dressing-rooms and pool rooms, and bathrooms with sunken baths—intruding into one chamber where a disheveled man in pajamas was doing liver exercises on the floor." Of Mice and Men, you see the lifestyle of poor men. George and Lennie are doing whatever it takes to make their dream come true. All they want is a nice house on a few acres of land and have many animals. People during this age, The Roaring Twenties, had difficulties obtaining the "American Dream" if they weren't born into wealth. Even though to George and Lennie looked at their dream as nearly impossible, Jay Gatsby could have all they wanted and
This relates back to the thesis because they continue to share a common goal and there are always the stronger that step in the way. There are also many elements that neither Gatsby or Lennie could control that will affect the dream but through all of it they fought for what they wanted no matter their
How Does Gatsby Reflect the 1920’s? The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a story that mirrors the extravagant 1920’s and all of it’s wild lifestyle. In The Great Gatsby it is of a man of newly acquired wealth who sets forth trying to achieve an already lost dream. While in Of Mice and Men this ‘story’ is about two men who try to cure their loneliness and set forth trying to attain a simple enough dream, but let their selves waver with each struggle life passes along moving further away from the path of achieving the dream. In The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Douglass writes about his own past and how he achieved his never ending dream. Each book is of a different story, and maybe at first glance one wouldn’t connect each book to a common matter, but as one looks deeper a single theme connects each novel. The concept of the dream is a common topic.

Of Mice and Men is a tale of the life of those who work on ranches as well as a particular friendship between two men, George and Lennie. John Steinbeck uses his novel Of Mice and Men to expose the harsh reality of life in the depression; an era of unemployment, poverty, hunger and homelessness in the 1930s. Steinbeck felt it was part of a writer’s responsibility to demonstrate these conditions, of not only the hardship of the depression, but also the poor treatment of disabled and marginalised people. He spreads his intentions through the relationship between George and Lennie and the survival of ranch workers, though some provoke more empathy than others. Steinbeck uses the ranch workers Of Mice and Men to display the reality of what these

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby describes the life of Jay Gatsby in the 1920’s. The novel shares his love story and his loneliness. A major question the author raises is how does wealth impact class structure and society? Fitzgerald answers this question through the distinction between “New rich” and “Old rich” and the significance of East and West Egg.
In the 1920’s, social classes were divided with a large gap. The poor wanted nothing to do with the rich, and the rich wanted even less to do with the poor. In the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, he uses the class structure in the 1920’s to redefine poverty. While the rich people in the novel are material rich, they are still “poor” socially and psychologically. Poverty is shown in a differently in this book than other books being written in this time era, and in doing this, it shows the rich what they are, and how they treat others from a different perspective.

Arguably one of the most complex works of American Literature, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald displays a satirical United States taking place in the early twenties in New York. The roaring twenties often portrayed a happy time immediately following World War 1 however, it gave off a false feeling of joy and many people were truly unhappy. Even though Nick Carraway shows a realistic image of himself, The Great Gatsby encompasses an illusion created in this time period and portrays this image through the atmosphere surrounding the actions of its characters; it ultimately shows a conflict against reality, identical to that to the early 20th century. The Great Gatsby shows the upper class and their habits, which involved: carelessness,
The setting in The Great Gatsby is used mainly to paint a picture of the class differences in the roaring twenties. The people from all the social classes suddenly became aware of the class differences. It was evident that the social classes were clearly divided by location, amount of material possessions and the way one person acts. Throughout the story multiple examples of social classes were being inserted in The Great Gatsby, and how each social class was not found of the other. The American Dream is not all what is made up to be throughout this novel compared to portraying the different views of the objection of American Dream from then compared to now.
