-COLUMBIAN EXCHANGE- Before the Columbian Exchange, geologists believed that around 280 and 225 million years ago the earth’s previously separated lands became welded into a landmass called Pangea. They also believed that about 120 million years ago the lands began to separate. When this happened it created the Atlantic ocean which divided the Americas from Africa and Eurasia. Over several years later both the Americas and Eurasia’s biological evolution followed different paths creating two biologically separated worlds. The columbian exchange first started when Christopher Columbus set sail for North America in 1492, sailing under the flag of Spain on behalf of Ferdinand ll of Aragon and his wife Isabella of Castile, proceeding westward across the Atlantic ocean in search of direct routes with the same markets in Asia. Columbus had landed upon a place that is now known as the Bahamas on an island called Guanahani which Columbus renamed San Salvador.(Horgan, 2023) Upon Columbus's arrival he made connections between Africa and the Americas, because of his voyage there was a chain of events that changed the environment, ecosystems, and culture. Whenever they would take a prisoner they would assign them the dead relatives name and they would take their place in the family's household. And because of these diseases they were able to conquer the Native Americans. But over time as they lived with and around domesticated animals they began to develop amenities to the animals so they were no longer falling ill to the diseases as much as they did when they first arrived. (Horgan, 2023b) When Columbus first arrived they believed that if they worked for them by right of conquest they would bring them catholicism, because they were seen as savages that needed to be shown the truth. In order for Columbus to advance in his personal gains he had to disregard the interest of the Native people and force them to practice the foreign religion.
