Love, life, and death. All of these things is what really gave these characters ambition. The main ambition of each character was different but over all the same. In the novel The Great Gatsby, Gatsby just wanted to live a happy life with Daisy and make her happy. And in the other novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, Tea Cake he wanted to be with Janie and make enough money for both of them. Jody was the odd man out in this case, he wanted money and power and to live a “perfect” life. The similarities they have together is with Gatsby and Tea Cake they just wanted to live a nice life with the ones they love, and Gatsby and Jody both wanted a “perfect” life with their loved ones. Jody and Tea Cake both wanted Janie but also money. Jody, Tea …show more content…
Jody's he always holds a lot of power, and he does not rely on anybody, but he wants people to rely on him. When people disagree with him, he makes many people feel uncomfortable. For example, “There was something about Joe Starks that cowed the town. It was not because of physical fear. He was no fist fighter… He had a bow-down command in his face, and every step he took made the thing more tangible” (Hurston 65). Jody Starks is a man who has big ambitions, and can easily meet his goals with his money, but he also had power unlike the others. This contributes to his ambitions because if people continue to follow him then he can easily reach his goals, and his ambitions will only grow. When Jody and Janie's marriage comes to an end, Jody's life is also soon to end, but he still tries to keep the tough guy act even though he knows he is going to die, “Janie! Janie! don't tell me Ah got tuh die... Shut up! Ah wish thunder and lightin’ would kill yuh!” (Hurston 106-107). Janie came to say her final goodbyes and Jody tries to keep the tough guy act but obviously fails to do so, after he wishes death upon her, he passes away. Jody shows his ambition in this because he tries to look tough until the very end and wants power still and no one to look down on him. The money that Jody worked so hard to achieve would all go down the drain. With Jody ambitions he planned to do great things but his desire for …show more content…
Tea Cake is younger than Janie but is still very willing to find love. He does not have the money to really help or support Janie cause he does gamble a lot. But he starts telling her, “Ah no need no assistance tun help me feed my woman. From now on, you goin tuh eat whatever mah money can buy and wear the same” ( Hurston 65). Tea Cake is telling Janie about how he is going to take care of her, and that she won't have to worry about money because he will provide it. This shows Tea Cakes ambition very well because he's telling Janie about how he loves her and will find a way to gain money to support her. Tea Cakes gambling problem ends up getting worse and Janie gets the full wrath of it. For example, “That was when she found out her two hundred dollars was gone” (Hurston 140). This is the point of the novel where Janie understands Tea Cake gambling problem, and how bad it really is. This does show Tea Cakes ambition because it shows how badly he wants money and what he's willing to do to get it. Over all Tea Cake is a caring man and is winning to do whatever it takes to get money, even if it does hurt
“It was generally assumed that she thought herself too good to work like the rest of the women and that Tea Cake “pomped her up tuh dat.” But all day long the romping and playing they carried on behind the boss’s back made her popular right away” (Hurston 157). Men on the field were surprised to see her pick of the basket to pick beans, but as time went on they grew fond of her and their opinions of her changed. TeaCake and Janie’s relationship is going so strong and so well, and Janie starts to reflect on her previous relationships and how they compare to hers with TeaCake. He makes dinner with her, respects her, and see’s her as equal to him, whereas the men in past relationships have not treated her, or seen her, like that.
He was a man who caught Janie’s eye when they met with his carefree, positive, fun-loving nature. "Ah no need no assistance tuh help me feed mah woman. From now on, you gointuh eat whutever mah money can buy uh and wear de same. When Ah ain’t got nothin’ you don’t git nothin’", this quote shows Tea Cake’s respectful attitude towards Janie, telling her how when he has money, she has money as well. Unlike both of her other husbands, Tea Cake was the only one to treat her right, and believed women were not below men (hence him allowing her to work with him at Everglades fields).
He strolls into Janie’s shop after Joe’s death to begin his courtship, however, Janie doesn’t believe he is being sincere and brushes off his advances. This all changes after Tea Cake does something no one ever considered for Janie, he teaches her to play checkers. With this he planted the first seed of love in Janie’s heart without her recognizing it. Tea Cake and Janie eventually fall for each other and decide to move to the Muck where Janie begins to work alongside Tea Cake. This provides an excellent example on the true love Janie holds for Tea Cake because she refused to work in the fields with Logan Killicks, her first husband, for even a day.
The novels The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Their Eyes Were Watching God follow the lives of Jay Gatsby and Janie Crawford, respectively, exploring the depths of their love life and personal values. Wealth plays a big part of each story, however, with differing importance to the main characters. Janie is not materialistic, and cares not how much money she has, but whether she is happy or not. Gatsby, on the other hand, cares only about wealth and convinces himself he is in love with Daisy, equating financial success with love and happiness. Their class, the themes and materialism that is shown in the novels reveal the place of wealth in their lives, showing how commodification is either negative or positive.
(Hurston 103) Not only does Tea Cake make her feel loved, and he makes her happy. “Whut would Ah do wid dat lil chunk of a woman wid you around? She ain’t good for nothin’ exceptin’ tuh set up in uh corner by de kitchen stove and break wood over her head. You’se something tuh make uh man forgit tuh git old and forgit tuh die." (Hurston 138) Tea Cake reassures Janie of his love for her
Christian Allusion in The Great Gatsby and The Old Man and The Sea Fitzgerald and Hemingway have taken christian allusions to the next level in their works. In the beautiful work by Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby, the Christ-like item is the Doctor's Eyes looking upon everyone driving out of The City of Ashes. In Hemingway’s work there are a lot of different parts that have christian allusions. But the one that stood out the most was when Santiago was laying down in the same position as Christ hanging on the cross. Even though some people may not see the Christian Allusions, that does not mean that they are not meaningful for the books The Great Gatsby and The Old Man and The Sea.
The American Dream suggests that every American citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work. One of the major ways that Fitzgerald portrays this is by alluding to outside events or works of literature specifically from that time period. Another major relationship that develops in The Great Gatsby is between Tom and Daisy. F. Scott Fitzgerald alludes to things such as the World’s Fair and “The Love Nest” to display the eventual dismantling of Tom and Daisy’s relationship. Both of these separate plots consolidate under the idea of Gatsby trying to become the epitome of the American Dream, as seen through his strive for a “perfect life.”

The eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg observed the deterioration and conflict amongst the characters in the novel. The eyes represent a godlike symbol in the novel because they witness all of the events unfold in every character's life. Nick apprehended, “I followed him over a low white-washed railroad fence and we walked back a hundred yards along the road under Doctor Eckleburg’s persistent stare” (28). Nick and Tom were heading over to see Myrtle when this quote was stated. At the time, Tom was married to Daisy
