In the Declaration of Independence it was written, “When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another.” A powerful line written by powerful men, the Declaration of Independence possessed characteristics later recognized in the Constitution. Thomas Jefferson, Third president of the United States, was one brain behind these beliefs written in the documents. However, running the country with a constitutional mindset often did not end the way it was intended. Jefferson, along with Theodore Roosevelt, and Andrew Jackson, each had their successes but also contradictory clauses, which have shaped the way America perceives each. Throughout his presidency, Thomas Jefferson strived to base his decisions off the constitution. A major decision that went against this, was the Louisiana Purchase. Jefferson sent two men to France to offer ten million dollars to obtain New Orleans. Instead, Napoleon asked if America would pay fifteen thousand for all of Louisiana. The men relayed the news back to Jefferson (Brinkley 199). Although, he believed that anything not written in the constitution was prohibited from his use. Some say he was one of the most successful presidents, but other believe he was basically a tyrant. Jackson was a very opinionated character that believed in individuals freedom, but his actions showed otherwise. Starting with the Indian Removal Act of 1835. He believed they were not part of a foreign nation, but that they were lower than whites, and he knew what was best for the Indians more than them. When the case was brought to the Supreme Court, he ignored their response of declaring his actions unconstitutional.
