In the twenties, it appears in the literary life of the United States some of the most renowned writers in fiction, drama and poetry. These writers were known as the “Lost Generation”, a generation whose name rises up as a consequence of leaving their homeland and settle a new life in Europe, and due to the attitude they assumed against wealth, opulence and materialism of the society, after the World War I and until the crack of 29. I find that the relationship between the Buchanan’s and Nick is the most crucial in the plot in chapter 1. Coming in a stranger, Nick has no idea what to expect when he goes to visit his cousin’s home. Also, the relationship between Tom and Daisy is observed in this chapter; the reader can tell that not everything seems to be alright in the Buchanan house. Nick sees how they live their lustrous life in a sort of sober state. Not long after, he realizes that the Buchanan’s homestead is not quite what it seems to be.

In the book, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby is reunited with the love of his life Daisy Buchanan. In the previous chapters Gatsby's character is more confident and easygoing. When Gatsby is around Daisy he is a bit nervous and tense. Although affairs are not often accepted or allowed in society, especially at that time, Fitzgerald does not make it seem like he has any problems with Daisy cheating on Tom to be with Gatsby. He tells their love story from five years ago, then he talks about how happy they are to get to see and talk to each other again after so long.

Flowers are living organisms, as diverse as humans, ranging from beautiful and delicate to strong and sturdy. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the symbolism of flowers develop the characters and show the effect money had on their lives and social status in The Great Gatsby. Daisy and Myrtle are two characters with these symbolic floral names, one with a life of money, and one without. Daisy flower petals represent an external appearance of purity and innocence, in contrast to the yellow center that shows how corrupt Daisy was by her materialism and desire for wealth. Myrtle, the other flower, is stark in comparison to the delicate beauty and ephemerality of the daisy.

There are various passages regarding the effects of characters struggling with illusion and reality. As Nick and Gatsby are driving, Gatsby tells Nick all about his worldly lifestyle and about all of his accomplishments, such as being educated at Oxford and receiving a war decoration from “every Allied government - even Montenegro, little Montenegro down on the Adriatic Sea!” (Fitzgerald). Gatsby also describes how he “lived like a young rajah in all the capitals of Europe — Paris, Venice, Rome — collecting jewels, chiefly rubies, hunting big game, painting a little” (Fitzgerald). Nick believes Gatsby to be lying; he thinks that all of his accomplishments and experiences sound too outrageous to be true.

The Great Gatsby is a story about the American dream and the people that lived it and those who pursued it. The story consists of the very rich, Tom and Daisy Buchannan, who inherited their wealth and lived in east egg. In the west egg lived, Mr. Gatsby, who it was rumored to have made his money in bootlegging. Also in west egg there was our narrator, Nick Carraway, who moved from the Middle West to learn the bond business.
