Over time, there have been multiple historical figures who have inspired others and have changed the course of history and influenced people around the world for years to come. Two of the aforementioned people were Toussaint L’Ouverture and Mohandas Gandhi. Toussaint L’Ouverture was an important figure in the freedom of Haiti from European imperialism. Haiti was controlled by European Imperialists who had terrible conditions for slaves, heavily taxed and fined the natives, and treated them unfavorably. He connected Enlightment ideas and ideas from the French Revolution in his fight for independence from Haiti. The British disregarded the Indian culture in the Sepoy Rebellion and oppressed and heavily taxed the Indians. He led peaceful rebellions, known as civil disobedience to defy the British. In Document 7, we learn of the destruction of the Indian economy by the British. They heavily taxed the Indians, which heavily affected the poor. Goods were made in Britain and shipped to India, causing a high unemployment and low income for Indians. Manufacture in India was strictly forbidden. The British also heavily manipulated the currency and the exchange ratio, which drained millions from India. Document 8, written by Gandhi, explains to us how India can become free. He would organize large peaceful protests to defy British law and rule. He potentially sacrificed his own life for the good of others. He led a giant protest which consisted of marching near the ocean and picking up salt, due to the British banning of domestic salt, even though India had a surplus. He is considered a major individual in the independence movement for India. He also strived for peace between Muslims and Hindus. Document 9 tells us Gandhi’s impact on global history. His ideas of civil disobedience were used in areas like the Philippians, Eastern Europe, Ghana, and China. He legitimatized non-violence to bring social change to the region. Starting in the 1870s, countries in Africa such as Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and India, Vietnam, in Asia were being colonized by the British. In order to gain their independence back they took non-violent and militant actions. Though both strategies were successful one was more successful that the other. He studied in London to become a lawyer and went to South Africa to practice law. The sepoy rebellion was caused by a feeling of British superiority over the Indian people. They didn’t respect them as much as they should and this went on for a while, but the last straw for the Indians was when the British used pigs and cow fat to oil and grease their guns.
