Similarities Between Walt Whitman And Emily Dickison

Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson use similar and different poetic devices. They were different and similar in their topics in the poems, “324” and “When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer”. They both talk about different and similar things and both come from the same era of writing which is the Romantic era.

Poetry is a way for people to express who they are, what they are feeling, and things that make them who they are in the piece of literature. Someone who comes to mind to some people is Emily Dickinson. Emily Elizabeth Dickinson was not a famous poet in her time. She wrote a lot poems, but only a few were made popular during her lifetime. Dickinson had only a few of her poems published while she was alive. She did not get the recognition she deserved or see the rest of her work become published. Dickinson is one of the most important people in literature. Her poems changed a lot of people by making them feel emotions. Emily Dickinson was a poet from Massachusetts who became well known after her death. From a young age, she aspired to one day become a poet. Her poems were always meant to tell the truth, however, the truth could easily become distorted. She was credited for having “...brought about a revolution in American poetry.” (Salem Press 285). It was the world around her and her relationships that influenced her writing the most. Whether it was her history or what other people thought about her, her views on her own poetry led Emily Dickinson to become one of the most outstanding poets of her time, one that would change the world.

Both poets are very similar to each other in a way that both of them lived in the nineteenth century. "The two giants of 19th-century American poetry who played the greatest role in redefining modern verse are Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson (Burt)". Both Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman are considered as the founders of today’s modern American poetry, whose they put the keystone, and which was further developed by other poets over the years. The poetry has been redefined. The modern poetry becomes more discreet which uses the topics of everyday life. However, both of them were two different personalities from a completely distinctive society because Emily Dickinson came from a conservative and strict family. Therefore, she is withdrawn, and on the other hand, a controversial personality because she dealt with the modern poetry. For that reason, her contradictory feelings often fight a battle with each other in her poems. Walt Whitman came from a simple civilian family, whose parents were very hardworking people who had big national values, thus according to his revolutionary and national ideology Walt Whitman fits into the modern American poetry. When reading the two poems, one can definitely catch the similarities of both poems, yet how they vary differently. One poem talks about how the winter evening makes the day feel and the other talks about how dark it is in the cellar and the how life is down there. They both seem to have been written by someone going through depression or a difficult situation in life. Many poems can be written to sound similar to another piece of work, yet have different meaning and ideas. The poems I chose seem to both be in a dark, dull, cold setting. One being the cold winter evening and the second in the dark and cold cellar. Reading the two poems shows that both poems are similar, but vary in details, being one talking about the winter evening and the other talking about the cool cellar and how lifeless it seems down there.

Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson would skillfully and passionately write several a hundred poems between them, and while they were seldom appreciated in the years of the authors, they would become treasured during the time after them. Walt Whitman was born in 1819, and at the age of 11 was deprived of a normal childhood education because his father wanted to recapture the families lost glory. The Whitman’s were once a wealthy family, owning a good deal of farmland in the New York state’s long island (Walt Whitman Biography, n.d.). Similarly, Emily Dickinson would finish most of her childhood education, attending two different academies for a total of eight years (Emily Dickinson Biography, n.d.). While it is not known whether Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson knew each other, their one commonality is that they both loved literature. Together the Rebel and Recluse changed the way that Literature operates through their differing but similar viewpoints and literary styles. Henry David Thoreau and Edgar Allan Poe have some characteristics in common. Their writings also have similar aspects which relate to how we see things in the world. Both authors have very contrasting writing, although both differences and similarities are discovered by such characteristics. The writing of Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman shows many similarities and many differences through their backgrounds and themes, and the way both aspects affect their writing.

During the 1900s, there were many famous authors who wrote about African Americans and Civil Rights. This was what was going on during this time period. Segregation and discrimination towards blacks was increasing. Two famous authors were Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou. Langston Hughes wrote the poem “I, Too, Sing America.” Maya Angelou wrote the poem “Still, I rise.” These two poems both have their own meaning but are still similar in many ways.

To begin, it’s important for the two poets to led the readers to understand the context about death behind their poems and how it has inspired them to write about it. Throughout Dickinson’s life, she has experienced death in many ways and forms: with that, death has made a great impact in her writings. In Dickinson’s poem, “I heard a Fly buzz – when I died –,” Dickinson looks into the physical procedure of dying and how it affects not just herself, but others as well. When Dickinson was dying on her deathbed, she describes the fly as a figure of the theme death itself, as the wings of the fly basically cuts off the speaker of the poem. This thesis will be dealing with the life and work of two most prominent women writers of the 19th and 20th century, Emily Dickinson and Sylvia Plath. For better understanding of complex topics their work reflects, I will describe important events from their biographies. Although Dickinson and Plath lived in two different centuries they were connected by a common thread, the position of women in the male-dominated world. Not only that they wanted for women to have the same rights as men, but also to be free from the roles of housewives and mothers which were imposed on them by a conservative society. They fought for these rights in only way they could, by writing. In order to show the manner in which Dickinson’s and Plath's poems portray gender relations and, more specifically, how they granted women a strong voice, I will analyze several poems and a novel.
