When sexual abuse occurs children often act or behave in ways that are counterintuitive to what society believes they should behave. In 1983, Dr. Roland Summit developed the Child Sexual Abuse Accommodation Syndrome model to help others understand the many ways in which children react to sexual abuse. The model is broken down into 5 stages, the first two Secrecy and Helplessness are the preconditions to the occurrence of sexual abuse and the remaining three Entrapment and Accommodation, Delayed, Conflicted, and Unconvincing Disclosure, and the finally Retraction, are sequential contingencies which take on increasing variability and complexity (Summit, 1983).

Between the mid-late 1970s and the early 1980s, Dennis Nilsen began mass murdering young men in Great Britain that had at least 15 men through strangulation (Crime Investigation, 2014). In analyzing his life, many of contributions throughout his life could have influenced his criminal behaviour when committing his crimes. Many theories such as broken home hypothesis and schema therapy theory use psychological explanations that determine how the individual resulted into committing their crimes. With schema therapy theory, not only does it discuss the justification for criminal behaviour, but suggests how to reduce the relapse of criminal acts by identifying the cause or the trigger of the individual’s criminal behaviour (Vos et al., 2016). The rights of children are being undermined by American civic laws. Children see a comfortable amount of protection from the government, but several issues exist as a result of America still not ratifying The Convention on the Rights of the Child, meaning children are not being protected from abuse, malnutrition, and are not receiving basic health needs. one in four children in America go hungry every day because of lack of food. This percentage of children are primarily of different ethnicity. A child must never go hungry no matter what ethnicity they are, America must protect their younger citizens (0-18 years of age) from going hungry. Because of the data, these commonalities are able to be precursors leading up to child abuse or maltreatment but many times it is hard to measure the severity of them and therefore they may end up undetected (U.S DHHSA

To be loved, to be praised, to be cherished; three things that every child in the world wishes for. It is a parent's job to grant their children with these needs. However, some children are not as lucky as others and are not blessed with the caring parents that they deserve. Luckily, the foster care system is there to help. The foster care system helps provide safety and care for children whose families are unable to do so.

Contemporary outlooks on child abuse can be traced to the early 1960s, when developments in radiological equipment made it easier for physicians to detect any sorts of maltreatment. But oftentimes parents who mistreat their kids do not go to physicians, rather they just cover up signs of abuse in the comfort of their home. That was the case of Dennis Jurgens, a three year old boy who was abused and murdered by his adopted parents in White Bear Lake Minnesota in 1965. Since the discovery of this case, the course of adoption process, child safety and security, and people’s attitude towards child abuse has changed to some degree. Dana’s history of maltreatment, both from her birth family and foster families, may have been the cause of the lengthy list of social problems that followed. Poor outcomes are associated with children who are abused, runaway, and have a drug dependency problem. Literature has shown that children who are sexually abused as children have high risk of being a victim of commercial sexual exploitation, become addicts, and becoming pregnant as adolescents. Foster parents are supposed to protect children, yet Dana was exposed to additional abuse in out of home care. She was reunified to her parents yet they were unable to protect her from becoming a CSEC victim.

Intimate partner violence is considered the most life-threatening and distressing family issue on a societal platform (Hamilton, Jaffe, & Campbell, 2013). The term family is utilized loosely as familial depictions vary, but to be certain the family has two partners that can be diversified roles and gender. By definition intimate partner violence illustrates a pattern of behaviors that are deliberate and intended to gain power and control over another person (Hamilton, Jaffe, & Campbell, 2013). Intimate partner violence does not need to be necessarily violent actions, but can be verbal threats, isolation, neglect, and disempowering tactics. The series of behaviors and violence can hastily escalate and the probability of homicide increases in those relationship dynamics. Not only is the victim at risk of death, but there are direct correlations to child deaths during the admission of the parent homicide and/or as a form of retaliation. One of, if not the most important issue regarding child welfare is the role parents play in their children’s lives. A major issue facing the protection of children is lack of proper parenting education. According to research by the National Children’s Alliance “More than 3 million American children are investigated for child maltreatment each year." The site also states that “Nearly 700,000 children are abused in the U.S annually" and even more alarming statics is that “In 2016, an estimated 1,750 children died from abuse and neglect in the United States.” A major part of this issue stems from parents who overwhelmed or are underprepared to be parents lacking the proper resources and parental knowledge to take care of their children.
