“The Hardships of a Slave” The autobiography Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave depicted the life of a slave during the 1800’s. Not only did it explain the life of Frederick Douglass, but also, the life of his family and friends around him. It showed the true severe and harsh treatment of African Americans during this time. Around this time, being an African American meant you were treated as less than human, property, an animal. Slaves were pushed and chastised simply because of the color of their skin, something they had no control over.
Slavery in the American South Slaves in the American South longed for freedom, fair treatment, and better lives. Slaves were not treated fairly and dealt with many hardships in their daily lives. Life was not easy for slaves and one way that made life difficult was physical pain. One slave named Fredrick Douglass was sent to be with a slave breaker and slave-breaker means someone who would try to destroy the slave’s soul. As it states above slaves were sent to slave-breakers and so this is one of the struggle they had to go through in their life is getting their souls broke down.
The Douglass’s Narrative reveals very many things about the lives of the American slaves. The lives of the slaves were very hard. They were treated unfairly treated. American slave women were used for giving birth and having kids against their will. As soon as the slave child was born, they would sell the slave child.
Indentured Servants and slaves are two unrelated kinds of workers because of the reasons they are working and how long they work. Indentured servants would sign a contract saying they would work for someone if they paid for their trip to America, they were people willing to work. Slaves were African Americans that were forced to work for their owners, they were traded and bought from other people. Also Slaves ended up overpowering the Indentured servants for numerous reasons. Slaves were forced workers which meant that their owners could make them keep working for as long as they wanted them to.
Fredrick Douglass was an African-American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman who wrote My Bondage and Freedom which expressed his struggles and reflections about slavery. Through his journey, he has experienced the positive and the negative of being an indentured servant. Douglass has interacted with individuals who were much like as well as the people who put him down-slave-owners. The slave owner's lack of restraint and logical reasoning causes them to decline not only in the interactions with non-slave owners and interactions between other slave owners but also in economics and politics. The captains of the ship completely disregarded the rights of the slaves as they were treated as “black cattle” (James Irving, letter to Mary Irving 1786) and that the “kings and principal men bred Negroes for sale as [they] [did] cattle” (Alexander Falcolnbridge, An Account of the Slave Trade on the Coast of Africa 1790). This demonstrates the crude treatment the slaves encountered whilst on the ships as they were often compared to cattle. However, the African slaves were not the only people experiencing this treatment. The sailors and crew on the ship consistently faced hardships from the captains. Many fell ill to the diseases that were passed around by the slaves while still experiencing abuse from the captains themselves
Africans Americans were brought over to the United States to be slaves for Caucasian people. All African Americans had to endure torture, losing family members, punishment, and much more. They had no freedom whatsoever and if they tried to fight for it, they were punished for it dearly. African Americans had to face so much to gain their freedom, and even when they did some people did not agree with the ruling. Even in today’s culture there are still people who see African Americans as less and judge them harshly based off of the past.
Instead, of houses and rest hours a slave’s day consisted of their work, then their own personal chores,and finally sleep. A slave’s life consisted of the unfair treatments from owners. Fear controlled most slaves which kept them from breaking out in riots or running away. Unless a slave had a good owner to give them better
In multiple letters and notes he wrote he expressed his guilt for the slaves and once the slaves paid off their debt and Jefferson’s he hoped to free them. Jefferson and his slaves remained in debt until the day he died. Jefferson believed that slavery not only deprived blacks of their liberty but had an “unhappy” influence on the masters and their children (Takaki 63). If a master is constantly punishing a slave and cannot restrain, the child’s master will imitate and master it, resulting in a nonstop cycle of slavery. Jefferson wanted to abolish slavery but when freed they had to be removed from society since slaves took up most of Virginia’s population.
The slave trade was when settlers took Africans out of their country and brought them to America to use as workers and laborers that they didn’t pay or keep healthy. The slave trade and the Indian Removal Act are similar because both of them did not get the choice on if they got to move from their homes, they were just told to by the Americans. In Source C it states, “But we were unjustly dragged by the cruel hand of power from our dearest friends.” The slaves are saying that slavery separates them from their friends and more importantly, their families. This petition is trying to persuade others to put an end to slavery. The slaves are saying that slavery is unnecessary and needs to be stopped. Slavery also displays that the slave did not have the same amount of equality as others. Another quote that additionally proves the point of slaves not being equal is, “Our children are also taken from us by force and sent many miles from us…” This quote furthermore displays how slave’s children are taken away and sent far away.
But even with the North beginning to want to change things, slaves were still not treated like human beings most of the time. Most were left unfed and if they disobeyed orders they were whipped and cruelly beaten. However, the most of the South didn 't see slavery as inhumane. As slavery became free in the north this soon disrupted the founding fathers beliefs of what slavery should be and this dismantled the nations stability to the core. Slaves were always beaten for any punishment to keep them in line. The founding fathers like this due to they can control the slaves out of fear. By corporal punishment spreading across America to the whites it was also the biggest thing slaves had that they were valuable to a point more Valuable than some white people which the founding fathers hated. They hated this because According to Russell he names several slaves that had killed their masters for over beating them and the resistant slaves a lot of the time was allowed to live sometime they weren’t even beaten (Pg.61-62).
After people were arrested they were leased to companies in the south as a work force until their sentence ended. Some prisoners, were even worked to death because they worked all day in unsafe conditions. When there was a large work force needed, authorities would arrest large numbers of people to work. Since the prisoners weren’t looked as property they were treated worse than the slaves had been treated, making it worse than
They complain that their children are taken from them and often sold as slaves in distant lands where they will never see them again. They also mention that often their children’s lives are often unnaturally short from having been taken from their mothers so young. They ask how they can perform the duties of husband/ wife or that of a parent whilst in the condition of slavery. The petitioners argue that it is wrong to enslave their children who are born in a “free” country. Reading 2, Question 3: The tone of these petitions to me is very much that of a plea.
