In the post-Civil War South, the economic situation that followed the emancipation of slaves and therefore the loss of the labor force, forced the South to find a suitable replacement for slavery. This also meant enacting laws designed to keep former slaves tied to the land. The economic system, which replaced slavery, was sharecropping. To keep the former slaves tied to the land, however, laws such as the black codes ensured a steady stream of workers to harvest the crops. Furthermore, vagrancy laws, which were designed to punish vagrants by making them harvest crop for a plantation owner, were passed.
Southern states justified slavery by using many points. They used the economy, history, religion, legality, social, and humanitarianism. One reason was that if all slaves were freed, there would be a very high unemployment. Another reason the South had was that having slaves would boost the economy. Southern states defended slavery by using history:” Slavery has been legal for a long time before now, so it is a natural thing to do.”
the slaves played a big part in the civil war. The civil war was for four years, from 1861 to 1865. In this battle it was the union against the confederate states of america. the death count in the civil war was more that 620,000, with millions more injured. The north the union army wanted the slaves to be free and to have their own equal rights as a human being.
Slavery in the Southern United States was a system by which the white man ruled the black man. Slavery in the United States draws its roots back to the colonial era with the African slave trade. What makes slavery different in the United States than in the Caribbean was the fact that the United States developed a slave population capable of reproduction and even growth. When the African Slave trade ended, the slave population was able to maintain and grow in size. Slavery would continue to thrive in the southern United States due largely to the booming cotton industry which required a large work force to cultivate the crop.
In 1865 slavery was dead because it was after the civil war meaning that the 13th amendment was in place, which claimed there would be no more slavery. Also by then Lincoln said his emancipation proclamation which declared slaves in the
During this time, the U.S. was split into two sections, the majority of the southern states had seceded from the United States, banding together as their own country known as the Confederate States of America who were fighting the war to keep slavery legal. The northern states maintaining their commitment to the United States were fighting the war to end slavery. The Transcontinental Railroad was going to open up the territories west of the the Missouri River and allow the creation of more free states. Fearing the loss of influence of slave states, the congressional representatives of the south opposed the railroad on financial grounds.
Machines such as the cotton gin required extensive labor and African Americans had supplied the labor. There were many more jobs which required inexpensive labor. This is when slavery had raised again after the constitution of 1787. The main issues during the age of realism was slavery. Slaves were forced to work for their master in order to survive, they went through harsh punishments and abuse.
The Civil War was the war that tore the united states apart. Most people assume the war was fought only about slavery. But the war was fought for many more reasons. The north, known as the Yankees, or the union. Wanted to abolish slavery, decreases the economy difference in the southern farms and better state and equal rights.
Why is Americas Destiny of Slaves and American Population changing? In the late 1800s , Mississippi, the nation’s largest cotton-producing state, was economically and politically dependent on cotton, as the entire South. It was indeed the South’s economic production. Mississippi’s social and economic histories in early statehood were driven by cotton and slave labor, the two then became involved in America. Cotton, was an intensive business, large numbers of workers required to grow and harvest cotton came from slave labor until the end of the Civil War. Therefore all crops were abanded and replaced by Cotton which caused damage on the soil.
Even Though there have been many special days, the end of slavery is one of the best. Slaves worked and yield cotton. Slavery was a tremendous concept in America, and this concept was one of issues in the Civil War. Slavery is a special day for Americans and African Americans, because the Emancipation Proclamation was signed for the freedom of Slaves.
Why South Carolina Seceded The time has come and Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration is approaching. So, the House of Representatives of South Carolina have been discussing what the future holds for us, slave states, after Lincoln abolishes slavery. Everyone knows that if Lincoln wins the Civil War, his main goal will to abolish slavery and for all the states to become a Union. However, we, as Representatives of South Carolina, wrote a letter which declared that “the people of the State of South Carolina, in their sovereign capacity, have resumed the powers delegated by them to the Federal Government of the United States, and have thereby dissolved our connection with the House of Representatives” (History, Art & Archives, U.S. House of Representatives).
During the Revolutionary War and after the war ended, slavery was still occurring and very popular according to a map adopted from North of Slavery (Leon F. Litwack). The map depicts which states of America, north or south, abolished slavery versus states who continued using the method of slavery. After the war ended in 1783, many slaves were still working and not have been freed. By 1786, the northern states had freed the slaves, while the slaves in the south were not free until 1863 due to the Emancipation Proclamation. The time difference of the release of slaves in the north compared to the south is precisely 77 years.
This document went in detail on Abraham Lincoln’s election, economical issues and military protection. The Declaration of Causes was finished in the early 1860s. These documents were another way the South tried to secede from the
I believe that the Fugitive Slave Act was the main cause of the Civil War. This was when the south forced the north to catch any runaway slaves. Even if they just let the slave go through there property there is a high chance they could still get caught. When they get caught for not catching the slave they get fined 30,000 dollars in today's money. If they were to catch a slave and then have it run away it would be a 100,000 dollar fine.
