A sleep disorder can be described as a condition in which a patient is afflicted with disturbance in the amount, timing or quality of their sleep. This disturbance would be a persistent problem that affects the patient’s social or occupational functioning and would cause a significant amount of emotional distress. According to the National Institutes of Health State-of-the-Science conference on Manifestations and Management of chronic Insomnia in Adults, evidence supports the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral-therapy and benzodiazepine receptor agonists in the treatment of chronic
With exceptional haste we begin to recite our knowledge of the human mind. As is stated in The Twenty-Four Hour Mind by Rosalind D. Cartwright, sleep allows our brain to consolidate our experiences and memories of the day (Cartwright 30) while we lay in a semi-vegetative state (Cartwright iix). The consequences of lack of sleep are evident in studies performed on individuals who suffer from insomnia. In “Sleep in the Workplace: What the Psychologist-Manager Should Know About Sleep”, the article highlights the cognitive effects that lack of sleep can have on an individual including impaired working memory, learning capability, and decision-making (Gaulltney & Collins-McNeil 135). Our rational mind dismisses Murakami’s obvious fictional short story and dismounts every claim that a human could survive without sleep.
Sleepless in American is a National Geographic documentary on the lack of sleep Americans are receiving each night. The film starts with the statistic that “40% of American adults are sleep deprived” and followed with different effects of sleep deprivation such as: weight gain, delayed reaction time, depression, anxiety, speeds the growth of cancer, and has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Although, there is no scientific evidence to support the need for sleep, it is an important process that allows our bodies to function properly. Several sleep studies have been performed to understand the effects sleep deprivation has on a person. The participants of the sleep trial only received four hours of sleep per night.

For example, living in a loud dorm room with friends is a social factor that prohibits an individual from getting sufficient sleep. Sleep is an essential part of how a child's body and mind grow and develop. Regardless the age, children may have different sleep problems. The prevalence of sleep disorders varies according to developmental stage. In case of children from 10 to 14 years old (grammar schools’ students), it is especially important to teach them sleep hygiene principles and explain them the possible causes of such disorders.
A few strategies are to increase knowledge of sleep loss and sleep disorders among the general public. Also, expand information among health care professionals through education and training. The general public needs to be aware that they are doing their bodies more harm by staying up late and giving themselves less amount of sleep. The number of sleep clinics has increased during the last year to assist those who have trouble sleeping. The purpose of these clinics is to help those who may have a sleep disorder and not know.

There are ways to treat these disorders, including exercise, meditation, therapy, and pharmaceuticals. The study by Akram and his associates, found a connection between these three disorders and insomnia, therefore, they concluded treating insomnia would also help relieve symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. Relieving the symptoms of these disorders, according to the study, also helped people with self-critical perfectionism. The results of the study concluded, people who had sufficient sleep and rest, were more able to handle the activities and hurdles of everyday life (Akram, Ellis, & Barclay, 2015). Some treatments for insomnia include exercise, regular sleep schedule, acupuncture, yoga, and avoiding caffeinated food and drinks before bed.
